Do you have a question about your Macintosh operating system? If you're like most Mac users, there are hundreds of little system tweaks and goodies you have not yet explored. To get you started, we looked at some frequent questions about versions 8.5 and the Mac operating system. Q: I keep hearing about the System and the Finder. What are they? Q: What do extensions and control panels do? A: If the SYSTEM FOLDER is the heart of your Mac, extensions (the jigsaw-puzzle icons) and control panels (icons with a slide on them) are the blood. To over simplify, control panels handle system functions, and extensions control external activities. Which of these you need depends on the configuration of your computer and your programs. Download the InformINIT (http://mcO4.equinolx.net/infonninit) shareware ($15) to help you decide which of these you need. Q: What is the easiest way to access these?

Reinstalling operating system can speed up computer

Q. I do all of the regular maintenance suggested, like defragging and disk cleanup, to keep my Windows system tuned up, but I find it still gets slower over time. Why is this? A. Regular maintenance can help keep a computer working quickly for longer stretches of time, but most systems begin to slow down noticeably after several months of steady use. Over time the Windows operating system handles a lot of information, but much of it is temporary. Old settings, data and other outdated system information that Windows has but no longer needs can gum up the works and slow things down. Bits of software used by the operating system can also become damaged or corrupted over time and by crashes, which can contribute to slowness.

Preliminary Notes
1. The following information details suggested steps for customizing the Macintosh operating system so that it may be used more effectively by persons with disabilities. Changes should only be made for the person using the computer. Most modifications can be accomplished using features built into the operating system. These suggestions highlight those features and provide guidelines for modification. 2. Be sure to have your original Macintosh operating system diskettes (or CD) available. 3. In this document, names of buttons, menu items, or commands appear in bold ; text to be entered by the user appears in "quotations." Do not type the quotation marks. 4. When using pop-up windows (e.g., control panels and especially the Chooser ), be sure to close all windows when changes are completed.

To determine what version of the operating system (operating system, system software and "OS" are all used interchangeably throughout this document) you are running complete the following steps:
  • With your computer turned on and no applications running (or you are at the finder), select "About this Macintosh" from the Apple Menu in the upper left corner of the screen. If you don’t see this menu item, then you are not at the finder – you still have applications open. Once you select the "About this Macintosh" menu item, a window will pop open that will tell you what operating system version is running. Look for a line that starts "System Software 7."…… It is necessary to upgrade your operating system if you are NOT running at least MacOS 7.5.5.

PC and Macintosh Email Clients: OIT Desktop Support Recommendation
Several years ago, the only way someone could check their WAM or Umail email at the University of Maryland was to use a telnet program to connect to his or her account and read the email displayed on the screen. This is no longer the case, as people can now use email clients to read and respond to their email more efficiently. While there is no official UM standard email client, the OIT Desktop Support group has studied several email clients commonly used at the university and has come up with the following recommendations based on the following criteria:
    • POP and IMAP features Message features Identity features Address Book features General/Miscellaneous features

The operating system of a computer performs basic tasks such as: recognizing information from the keyboard and mouse, sending information to the monitor, storing of information to the hard drive, and controlling device peripherals as printers and flatbed scanners.
Operating systems provide the basis for running common applications such as word processors and Internet browsers. Operating systems are also responsible for running Assistive Technology applications such as screen magnifiers, and applications that read text aloud.
