Image: " Gateway " Artist: Virginia Cole Strazdins Artist's Comment: Even when we must deal with a "trial by fire or ice (stressful events such as illness)," we have choice. The gate is always open to a better way, to knowledge, to wisdom, to balance, to whatever constitutes wholeness in our unique human perception. There is no lock on the door. Whether we choose to enter into that better place is largely up to each of us. Passing through the door requires us to leave fear at the threshold so that we can step "into the light." The crow, or raven, has been a cosmic symbol for many cultures, being associated with creative power, spiritual strength, solitude, primordial beginnings, and mystic powers. It is known to those who have observed it closely as a highly intelligent and alert creature. Email Virginia @ straz@usit.net

Macrobiotics Founder Dies of Cancer at 78
Aveline Kushi, a leader of the health food movement who helped found one of the nation's first natural food stores, has died following a lengthy battle with cancer. She was 78. With her husband, Michio, the Japanese-born Kushi was a leading proponent of alternative medicine and of macrobiotics, the belief that eating a mostly vegetarian diet of organic grains and produce, affects far more than physical health Practitioners believe that eating meat and processed foods contributes to aggression and disharmony not only in individuals, but in whole societies, undermining prospects for world peace. Kushi was diagnosed with cancer of the cervix about nine years ago.

What is Macrobiotics? Macrobiotics is a way of living with respect for the physical, biological, emotional, mental, ecological and spiritual order of our daily lives. Beginning with a reorientation of everyday eating, using whole natural foods of highest quality and simple more traditional methods of preparation. Macrobiotic living means striving to learn the art of balance in everything we do. The Macrobiotic idea places special emphasis on conscious diet because regulating your daily eating and drinking is the most basic, practical way to change your own life condition. The food you eat becomes your blood, affecting the quality of your cells, tissues organs and your mind. Properly nourished, your body, heart and mind can more easily cleanse and renew themselves. This can be a wonderful experience, and an opportunity to learn more about yourself and the process of natural healing. Macrobiotics is a revival of eating the simple, natural foods that sustained and vitalised our ancestors. It includes the commonsense principles of eating foods that grow in your climatic zone, eating fresh foods in their seasons, and preparing foods thoughtfully to enhance their nutritional content and digestibility.

"Macrobiotics is a dangerous fad diet which, in certain cases, can lead to death." The above statement comes from a nutrition textbook. Many doctors, nutritionists and dieticians learnt in their nutrition studies that macrobiotics is dangerous. And so, understandably, they cling to this view without making much effort to find out the truth about macrobiotics - and the background as to how this view arose in the first place. As a result, followers of macrobiotics - especially those with cancer and other serious illnesses - are often warned by their doctors and other medical professionals that "macrobiotics is dangerous". This idea arose during the 1950s and early 1960s, when macrobiotics was first introduced to the West from Japan.

Not Sick, Just Discharging SINGAPORE There is a small macrobiotic community in Singapore comprising maybe 30 or so families who follow the diet quite closely, plus hundreds more who follow it more loosely. A few macrobiotic friends have studied at the Kushi Institutes in Becket, USA and Amsterdam, Netherlands, as well as the Vega Study Centre in California, USA. Thousands more have attended lectures and workshops given by both Singaporean and foreign macrobiotic teachers. Macrobiotics was introduced to Singapore in the early 1980s by David Tio, currently an osteopath with Osteopathic Treatment Centre at Tanglin Shopping Centre. David had studied at the Kushi Institute at that time in Boston. When he returned, he started giving classes here, set up a society called the Macrobiotic Study Centre and also opened a macrobiotic foods store. Occasionally, he also brought in macrobiotic teachers from abroad.

Macrobiotics and eating your way to wellness
The dietary discipline of macrobiotics was developed by the Japanese philosophy student George Ohsawa (Nyoiti Sakurazawa) and is based on the idea that harmonious balance must exist between the yin and yang forces of life - even in diet. This form of eating is often prescribed by complementary therapists, naturopaths, holistic healers and herbalists and is said to be beneficial in treating a variety of ailments and diseases through a limited diet and is also said to provide a spiritual foundation. All foods are classified as either Yin or Yang and are not classified by nutritional value. In broad general terms a macrobiotic diet calls for about 50 percent of kilojoules from whole grains (which are Yin and Yang balanced), 30 percent from vegetables, 10 percent from beans and sea vegetables, 5 percent from fish, shellfish, fruits and nuts and 5 percent from soup made with grains, vegetables and fermented soya beans (miso). The drinking of huge volumes of liquid is not advocated since it is believed that excess liquid places a strain on the kidneys and back and can lead to fatigue. All processed foods are banned and coffee and spices are discouraged since they are said to excite the nervous system.

Nutrition HOME Blood Typing Celliods Macrobiotics Mercy Oil Metabolic Typing Supplements Weight Control Macrobiotics The Macrobiotic Diet is an oriental-style vegetarian diet which is low in fat, emphasizes whole grains and vegetables, and restricts fluids. These are some of the same dietary principles that have been found to prevent heart disease. Low fat, high fibre diets are also believed to play a role in preventing some types of cancer. The macrobiotic emphasis on fresh, non-processed foods may prove helpful in dealing with certain food allergies and chemical sensitivities. The selection of foods is limited, so care must be taken not to develop nutritional deficiencies. A macrobiotic diet is also a preventative health measure, not a cure for any specific disorder. Whats in a name?
In Greek, macro means big or great , and 'biotic' means concerning life , so the word refers to the big view of life . Macrobiotics has become known as a diet, based on whole grains, vegetables, beans, sea vegetables (sea weed) fermented soy products, etc. However its roots go deep, the thinking behind it is based on the ancient Chinese understanding of Yin and Yang. They figured that the universe could be basically split into two categories, picture it like the Mother and the Father, these categories they called Yin and Yang. Of course the universe is huge and complicated, but with practice, all things can be seen to belong to one of either category. One major clue to categorizing something is expansion (Yin) and contraction (Yang) , for example rice is in a contracted condition and therefore Yang, whilst water melons are in a more expanded condition and therefore Yin. The macrobiotic way of life is holistic, taking into account all aspects of human life, and acknowledging the inter-relationship between body, mind, and spirit. Though the practice of the macrobiotic way of life, we take responsibility for our health and actions. The choices we make, even seemingly simple ones such as which foods to eat, and what cleaning and body-care products to use, affect the world to a much larger degree than many people realize. Changing to choices that support your health also supports that of others, and the planet, as natural products produce less toxic waste products. As we become more healthy through better food choices and lifestyle practices, we notice our emotions and mental patterns becoming more balanced and harmonious. Thus, expressions and actions become more positive, and this affects others also. To become macrobiotic is for most people a major shift in the way they look at life. The realization that we create our own health, or lack of health, through our choices is quite empowering.

    Macrobiotics
Macrobiotics is an all encompassing philosophy of living that uses diet as a primary focus. The macrobiotic understanding has its roots in Oriental philosophy such as Taoism and Chinese Medicine and advocates living in harmony with nature, especially through eating natural foods. Originally from Japan, there is a noticeable Japanese influence on the way macrobiotics is currently being taught and practiced. Yet, the philosophy of macrobiotics includes encompassing principles that apply to all cultures. Macrobiotics is a complete philosophy of life. Macrobiotics teaches principles of endless change, complimentary opposites, and a universal order, as understood by ancient and modern philosophers. Balance is a primary principle, the wisdom of unity and harmony between seemingly conflicting differences. In regards to diet, where veganism and vegetarianism are merely concerned with not eating various animal products, the macrobiotic philosophy actually discusses what to eat , including the quality of food, cooking methods, cooking equipment, and even covers proper chewing. Organic and whole foods are strongly advised, along with the correct balance of amounts and varieties of food. In this way, macrobiotics moves beyond an overly simplistic or exclusionary dietary practice into a vast understanding of healthy living.
