A Guide for the Perplexed
by Charles W. Moore Modern macrobiotics dates from the late 19th century, when a Western-trained Japanese Army doctor named Sagen Ishizuka became frustrated by allopathic medicine's ineffectiveness treating his own chronic illness. He researched traditional Oriental medicine, and developed a therapy he called shoku-yo Although shoku-yo/macrobiotics incorporates certain cosmological concepts common to several Eastern religions, it is not and never was religious in nature. Ohsawa's incorporation of Zen in the title of his first English-language book in 1960 caused no end of misunderstanding, but the prosaic truth is that he was attempting to coat-tail popular interest in Zen Buddhism on U.S. college campuses at the time. Serious Buddhists were not amused. In North America the two main schools of macrobiotics are based in Massachusetts and California respectively. The west coasters tend to be laid-back and intuitive in their approach, while the larger, eastern faction, led by Mr. Kushi, is more systematic and formulaic, although these are broad generalizations. The late George Ohsawa would no doubt be pleased, since his vision of macrobiotics was as a philosophic approach to eating, healing, and living, rather than a rigid orthodoxy. The macrobiotic view is that eating proper varieties and proportions of foods helps us achieve balance and harmony. Therefore, appropriate food choices depend on variables like an individual's health, age, sex, geographic location, physical activity, ancestry, the season, etc. Theoretically, there are as many definitions of a macrobiotic diet as there are people practicing it.

Macrobiotics The following explanation is excerpted from Pocket Guide to Macrobiotics by Carl Ferré.
Macrobiotics as it is known today is the result of the tireless work and vision of George Ohsawa (1893-1966). . . . While macrobiotic principles can be applied to all areas of life, . . . the macrobiotic approach to diet emphasizes whole grains and fresh vegetables, and for the most part avoids meat, dairy foods, and processed foods. The goal is to provide the body with essential nutrients so that it can function efficiently without loading it with toxins or excesses that must be eliminated or stored. And since the body is always adjusting to changes in the environment and to aging, its needs will always change as well. The idea is to continually balance the effects of foods eaten and other influences on the body, largely through diet, and to adjust to changes in a controlled and peaceful manner.
Very few people can make such a radical shift overnight. Instead, most people learn macrobiotics in stages. . . .

Culinary Arts What is Macrobiotics?

The term "macrobiotic" describes a holistic lifestyle which seeks to empower people to take control of their lives and to educate them to make healthy lifestyle choices and decisions. It empowers individuals to establish awareness, health, and harmony in their lives, personal relationships, communities, and environment.
Macrobiotics is a holistic philosophy that aims to achieve balance and peace in people's lives through awareness and common sense living. Common sense living includes getting enough rest, eating the way nature intended, being kind and respectful towards oneself and others, and respecting the environment.
Macrobiotics is now popularly known for and has been well-publicized for its success in curing disease, most notably cancer . While a very strict version of the macrobiotic diet can eliminate many cancers, a more varied diet based on whole grains, vegetables, beans, and other organic natural foods is recommended by most macrobiotic practitioners. By eating the way nature intended, you not only support the ecosystem, but also enhance your own health. To test this yourself, read our seasonal heath tip for easy ways you can transition to natural foods and feel stronger and healthier in the process!

Diet is one of the Main cause of disease
This course will teach you what food to eat to be healthy and what food to avoid to regain health A story:
As I was writing my Newsletter today, I had a phone call from Ula Woodbridge one of my German client. Ula was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in the Spring of 2001. She was told she was dying and only had a few months to live. No chance of survival she was told. She came to see me in August 2001 as she wanted to join one of my trips to the Philippines. She benefited from the healing treatments when she was in the Philippines and on my recommendation started a very strict Macrobiotic diet as soon as we came back to England. I told her precisely what food to avoid and which to eat if she wanted to exceed her prognosis of January 2002 at best for her death. Ula followed the diet very strictly and today (10 March 2003) the news was that she is completely clear of any tumour and that her blood count is improving all the time. Her doctors are completely baffled as they did not expect her to still be alive. Ula however is not. She has understood that her recovery is due to the elimination of toxic food in her diet and the supply of energising food.

What is macrobiotics?

What does the diet involve?
How does it work? How safe is it? What is macrobiotics? What does the diet involve? On your first visit, a macrobiotic counselor will most likely recommend that you begin trying to eat more whole, unrefined foods while you're learning (by way of books, tapes, seminars, or cooking classes) how to choose and prepare foods that balance yin and yang. In the standard macrobiotic diet, just over half your calories should come from whole grains, up to 30 percent from vegetables, and the rest from beans, seaweed, soy, and a small amount of fish. (A Zen version of macrobiotics has you progress through a series of ten increasingly restrictive diets, at the end of which you're eating only brown rice and small amounts of water.) How does it work? Macrobiotics practitioners say they can diagnose cancer and other diseases by looking at your irises, the colored part of your eyes. If a practitioner concludes that you have a tumor in a yin part of your body, he or she may suggest that you treat it by eating more yang foods. No research or scientific principles support these ideas. However, a macrobiotic regimen, like any low-fat, high-fiber diet, can bring your weight down, lower your cholesterol and blood pressure, and reduce your chances of developing heart disease and certain cancers that appear to be related to fat intake. What's more, taking part in a way of life that emphasizes harmony with nature may make you feel calmer and less stressed.

Columbia University provides an ideal environment for a Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine Research in Aging. This new center will be housed in the Richard and Hinda Rosenthal Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine under the direction of Fredi Kronenberg, Ph.D. The Rosenthal Center, established in 1993 in the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine, has a focus on research, education, and professional training. "As our nation's population ages, our expectations about aging and about health and health care are changing. More and more Americans are interested in complementary and alternative therapies for disease prevention and health maintenance as well as for management and treatment of long-term disability and chronic disease," said Dr. Kronenberg "The new center will address the issues of safety and efficacy of many alternative remedies, will develop research and professional training programs, and will enhance knowledge and information in this important emerging area of medicine."

    Eating with Purpose
The Macrobiotic diet is a way of eating based on choosing and preparing foods in harmony with nature and in accordance with one's individual needs. By promoting a diet low in fat, high in complex carbohydrates and fiber, and nearly cholesterol-free, macrobiotics has played a significant role in educating the American public about the value of a healthy diet and lifestyle as well as the concept that illness can be prevented and sometimes reversed.
    The History of Macrobiotics
Macrobiotic theory was first developed nearly a century ago in Japan by Dr. Sagen Ishizuka, while investigating traditional Chinese and Japanese medicine for a way to deal with his skin disease deemed incurable by Western medicine. After finding many references concerning the importance of food in the cause and cure of illness, Dr. Ishizuka wrote a book in 1897 called Shoku-Yo or The Cure Through Food In the book, he claimed that the basis of health and longevity is a proper balance between minerals in the body, particularly sodium and potassium. A whole grain based diet along with unrefined natural foods grown locally and eaten in season was promoted as the key to recovering from illness and maintaining good health. In 1913, George Ohsawa, then a young man with tuberculosis, discovered Ishizuka's theories and cured himself with the Shoku-Yo diet. Years later, Ohsawa traveled to Paris in 1929 and the U.S. in 1959 to introduce the West to his unique slant of the diet which he called "Macrobiotics", derived from the Greek words meaning "the great art of life".
