Madagascar Time and Date Madagascar Culture Back to Top Madagascar remains a geographic and historical paradox, linked in practice to Africa but identified in feeling with Indonesia, which is so far away as to have hardly any awareness of Madagascar or to maintain any contemporary ties of substance with it. The animal life and vegetation of the island are equally anomalous, differing greatly from that of nearby Africa and being, in many respects, unique Although the coastlands have been known to Europeans for more than 400 years and to Arabs for much longer, recent historical development has been more intense and concentrated in the central plateau, which contains the capital city of Antananarivo (formerly Tananarive). The road network and communications are generally better on the plateau, where the majority of the inhabitants have received some school education and are professing Christians, while in the coastal areas the majority follow traditional religions and generally have not attended school. In spite of Madagascar's proximity to the continent, its population is primarily related not to African peoples but rather to those of Indonesia, more than 3,000 miles to the east. The Malagasy peoples, moreover, do not consider themselves to be Africans, but, because of the continuing bond with France that resulted from former colonial rule, the island has developed political, economic, and cultural links with the French-speaking countries of western Africa. French and Malagasy are the country's official languages.

Madagascar Time and Date Madagascar History Back to Top The people of Madagascar are believed to be descended from Indonesians and Africans who reached the island in ancient times. Diogo Dias, a Portuguese sea captain bound for India in 1500, was the first European to sight the island. During the 17th century the Portuguese, the English, and the French successively and unsuccessfully attempted to colonize Madagascar. The Malagasy peoples are of mixed Malayo-Indonesian and Afro-Arab ancestry. The Indonesian element probably migrated to Madagascar about AD 700 by way of the African coast. The first European known to have visited the island was the Portuguese navigator Diogo Dias in 1500. The island was the haunt of many pirates during the late 17th and early 18th centuries. Trade in arms and slaves allowed the development of Malagasy kingdoms. At the beginning of the 17th century the most important kingdoms, those of the Antemoro, Antesaka, Antanosy, Maroserana, Betsileo, and Merina peoples, were still confined to small areas.

Culture
Most contemporary and traditional Malagasy music revolves around dance rhythms with influences from Indonesia and the African mainland, notably Kenya. These rhythms are accompanied by the flute, whistle and valiha , a unique, 28-stringed instrument resembling a bassoon but played more like a harp. The lokanga voatavo , or cordophone, is also popular, as are a few types of guitar, including the kabosy , similar to a ukelele. Vaky soava is a rhythmic style of singing accompanied only by hand clapping, and perhaps the most renowned exponent is Paul Bert Rahasimanana, who developed a personal style that included adding a musical accompaniment. He weaves themes of poverty, love, loss and hope into his music. The regional town of Fianarantsoa has developed into a literary capital of sorts in recent years, and several contemporary novelists and writers work there. While literature didn't really flower until the 1930s and 40s, traditional oratory, called kabary , is highly regarded. Kabary's roots are in early political assemblies, in which each speaker spoke in turn. It evolved and was eventually popularised and extended to the general public as a form of entertainment. Kabary is an integral part of

Vegetation beside the river is great. We get to know the area by a pirogue tour and we visit the limestone needles of Bemaraha. The west is also well known for the fabulous Baobab-alley near Morondava and its nice beaches. It is even better in the interest as visitors to contact the people. In this country, it seems to be time has come to stop. Madagascar is a great country with friendly and patient people.

It has been denotated that "Malagasy form one nation with one basic culture and language (though with many dialects)(Brandt 1994:21)". I have to disagree with this statement. It is my personal and professional opinion that the Malagasy culture takes many forms based upon distinct tribal affliations. There is diversity in customs and beliefs. There is also diversity in personal ideologies as well. There are eighteen different tribes recognized by the government. There are also three additional groups. In addition, there are a total of 39 ethnic groups who inhabit the island. Most of these ethnic groups have immigrated from India, China, and the Middle East. There also has been major internal shifts in tribal groups. Although there has been attempts to map the location of each tribal group, it is quite challenging to discern where each ethnic group resides. Personal Ancedote One example I have that illustrates this phenomenon of emigration is one of my informants, Rabetsy. Rabetsy is affliated with the Betsileo tribe. Rabetsy has been forced to find work away from his extended family who reside near Fianarantsoa. Within the last three years that he has worked at the Perinet Reserve that is located near Andasibe (200 km from Fianarantsoa), he has only seen his family once for a week. It costs about 100,000 fmg (US$20) roundtrip to travel to his home village. His monthly income is 120,000 fmg (US$24).
