Madagascar's people are guided by their unique culture
By the BBC's Alastair Leithead in Madagascar Madagascar is a truly unique country - it is close to Africa, but certainly not African, and this uniqueness goes some way to explain the quiet revolution that has changed the country in two incredible months.
Malagasy people are double-faced - one side is very sweet, smiling and charming people, but underneath there is a volcano
Elie Rajaonarison An island of more than 18 different tribes, Madagascar has an astonishing mixture of different faces - Indonesian, Asian, Polynesian, African and European - but despite the variety, Malagasy people share one language and one fascinating culture. For eight weeks, tens of thousands of people have taken to the streets of Antananarivo to force their incumbent president from power and to install a new president. And for eight weeks the mass demonstrations have been peaceful, almost carnival-like, setting aside a few isolated incidents.

It is possible for FDU students to study virtually anywhere in the world. Many universities would welcome you as an international student. Also, there are companies that are organized to facilitate travel abroad. As to how such an experience would fit into your curriculum: It is very important, if you plan to study abroad, to plan early, so that you will know how the courses you take will fit into your curriculum. Beeing an artiste ... ? Jean Loup Pivin
Can one be the object of criticism, analysis or a biography at the age of twenty ? Is it rational to acclaim a young man who, driven by media attention, will think he is... what he isn't or who will become what others would like him to be ? Consequentially, once the newborn flame has been blown out, disillusion and bitterness settle in the heart of the now cursed artist. Those who need curriculum vitae should stop reading now and await the improbable.

Bins of Vegetables for Sale in Zoma Market in Tananarive. Photo courtesy of Africa Focus The Democratic Republic of Madagascar, formerly known as the Malagasy Republic, is perhaps best known for its spectacular nature and incredible variety of unique plant and animal life. Separated from the African mainland by the Mozambique Channel, the island abounds with rainforests, tropical beaches, small islands and coral reefs, and protected national parks. The lemur, numerous species of butterflies, birds and amphibians, half of the world's chameleons, and 80 percent of Madagascar's plant life are endemic to the island.
The population of Madagascar is also a unique mixture of races. The majority of the island's initial immigrants were from Indonesia and South East Asia who, over the course of 2000 years, intermixed with migrants from the African mainland as well as Arab and European traders. Today, there are 18 official tribes in Madagascar. Over half of the population practices traditional religions, while approximately 40 percent are Christian and seven percent are Muslim. French and Malagasy are the official languages of the island.

Joanna Lumley is Patron of Akany Avoko.
Projet SoaVezo is a sewing and embroidery project for the women of Anakao, south of Tulear. It provides an alernative source of income for the women, reduces the pressure on octopus fishing (their primary source of income), and empowers them to lead progressive developments for their families and community. The thirty-two women who participate in Projet SoaVezo have helped build six toilets in the village (villagers generally use the high tide zone as their WC) and have led Anakao and Madagascar in its first participation in International Coastal Clean-up Day.
The women congregate at the Centre Sociale, behind the village approximately 200 meters from the Catholic Church, to use the four manual sewing machines to produce shirts embroidered with marine species. Visitors are encouraged to visit the center and talk with the women. These Vezo women are inspiring. By custom, the women are responsible for taking care of the children, cooking, cleaning, selling the fish that their husbands’ catch, and generating any additional income needed to care for their families. These motivated women often work through lunch in order to finish their goods. Purchasing a shirt from the project supports the sustainable development of Anakao.
