Course Description PHY 222 is a 1-credit course designed as a required co-requisite of PHY 212, General Physics II. It meets in sections of 25 students or fewer in Physics Building Room 112. Each section meets once per week for two hours, on Tuesday or Wednesday.
Course Objectives Physics can seem like a daunting subject, especially for beginners. It makes use of mathematics, logical reasoning, and a level of abstraction that are unfamiliar to most students. You are meeting serious physics for the first time in PHY 211 and 212. Our main goal in PHY 222 is to make measurements of the physical world. The reason is to help you to connect the concepts of physics that you are learning in PHY 212 with what they signify in the real world. You will learn about concepts like electric charge, electric and magnetic fields, current and voltage in electrical circuits, among others. On the one hand these are abstractions, but they are all connected to things that can be seen and felt.

More than 2000 years ago, Chinese medics realised that part of our body energy plays an important role in protecting us from disease. They called this wei chi (way chee), which means 'defensive energy', an invisible energy that circulates just under the skin and is our first line of protection against illness and pain.
The Chinese used a traditional therapy called Acupuncture which was believed to strengthen the wei chi against 'external pathogens' - outside influences such a s cold and damp which can influence the bodies immune function when defences are low and can cause ill health.
Today, research shows that acupuncture enhances the immune function by stimulating blood cell production and shows complex changes in the parameters of the immune system.
Many Millions of years ago when life was in the early stages of creation, the earth's geomagnetic field was perhaps hundreds of times stronger than it is today. Our bodies today, have been developed in an environment enriched in oxygen water, nutrients and MAGNETISM. All of the natural human systems in our bodies are electro-magnetic in nature and respond to the earth's natural magnetism. Our bodies' natural magnetic field is created by the flow of electrically charged ions in and out of cells, and the transmission of electric impulses through cell mem-brances. Due to the fast pace of modern living and the continual development in technology and society, the earth's geomagnetic field has grown very much weaker in the recent past. The goal
Create one mathematical structure for gravity and electromagnetism that can be quantized.
The problem
The difference between gravity and electromagnetism is the oldest core problem facing physics, going back to the first studies of electromagnetism in the seventeenth century. The best minds on the planet are trying to merge the Riemannian geometry of general relativity with the quantum field theory of the standard model. Three lines of attack are string theory in ten or eleven dimensions, loop quantum gravity, and non-commutative geometry. These approaches are technically challenging.
Some history
Gravity was the first inverse square law, discovered by Isaac Newton. After twenty years of effort, he was able to show that inside a hollow massive shell, the gravitational field would be zero. Ben Franklin, in his studies of electricity, demonstrated a similar property for an electrically charged hollow sphere. Joseph Priestly realized this meant that the electrostatic force was governed by an inverse square law just like gravity. Coulomb gets credit for the electrostatic force law modeled on Newton's law of gravity. Hundreds of years later, Einstein started from the tensor formalism of electromagnetism on the road to general relativity. Instead of an antisymmetric field strength tensor, Einstein used a symmetric tensor. There is a precedence for transforming mathematical structures between gravity and electromagnetism.

Physics 101A Modern Physics Winter 1999 I will maintain a web page for this course, where you will be able to find course information, homework assignments, homework and exam solutions, and so forth. The address (URL) is given on the first page of the syllabus. Hard copies of the handouts and solution sets will also be kept in the reserves of the science library. The required textbook includes, in an appendix, a short introduction to Special Relativity, including all that we will cover in this course. The recommended text on relativity, however, goes to much greater length to explain the history and ideas behind the theory. I strongly encourage you to make at least a first pass at the required reading assignment before the relevant lecture. If you follow that practice and in class concentrate on understanding the material and asking questions, then you will get much more out of the lectures than if you are just concentrating on writing down everything on the blackboard, upon seeing it for the first time. A set of homework problems will be given out each week, usually due on Thursday, as indicated in the syllabus. You are welcome to collaborate on the homework, but your final solutions should be written up by yourself (I don’t want to see multiple exact copies of the same solution). You are also encouraged to seek help on the homework, whenever necessary, from the TA and myself. While my office hours are the most convenient time for me to meet with you, if you have an urgent question that cannot wait or a conflict with my office hours, please feel free to drop in at any time during the workday. If I am not in my office, then I can usually be found around the SCIPP area in Nat. Sci. II. For example, be sure to check my lab in Room 369.

Typical subfields in physics are the study of force and motion, energy, heat, sound, electricity and magnetism, optics and laser physics, atomic and nuclear physics, astrophysics, condensed matter physics and elementary particles. In both basic research and applied areas, the physicist contributes his/her knowledge to the solution of questions encountered in all phases of human endeavor.
What Do Physics Majors Study?
The physics major has a wide range of options in selecting courses in mathematics, computer- science, engineering, biology, geology, education, business, etc. to accompany his or her study of physics. Thus a student can design a curriculum to meet individual career goals. A typical course of study for a physics major anticipating further graduate study in physics might take the form shown below. Many variations are possible. Note that most selections occur later in the program when the student has a better concept of career choices. The first year is quite similar to all other science and engineering curricula in order to provide the maximum flexibility.

Physics 1021 Introductory Physics II
This course will be offered in Winter Term 2003. A non-calculus based introduction to fluids, wave motion, light, optics, electricity and magnetism. Prerequisite: Physics 1020 or 1050. Mathematics 1000 or 1091, which may be taken concurrently.
