100. PHYSICAL WORLD (1 course) [Syllabus]
This course provides a one-semester introduction to both classical and modern physics, and is intended for students with majors outside the natural sciences. Topics of study include mechanics, heat, thermodynamics, wave phenomena, sound, light, electricity, magnetism, relativity, quantum theory, atomic and nuclear physics. These will be developed historically, and emphasis will be placed on topics which relate to current social issues. The approach will be quantitative, involving extensive use of algebra, but no calculus is required. Four lectures and one 2-hour lab weekly. Does not count toward a physics major. LAB or QUANT . Offered occasionally.

Anthony Tovar atovar@eou.edu PROGRAM OBJECTIVES The Physics degree is a true liberal arts degree, preparing the student for many options after graduation, from immediate employment to graduate school in a wide range of discipline. The problem-solving approaches developed in the physics curriculum can be applied in multiple career paths. Students are strongly encouraged to engage in research, either with faculty members or through summer internships. Our emphasis is on quality instruction, full student participation and individual attention to the student. LEARNING OUTCOMES At the end of their studies, Eastern Oregon University physics graduates will: - be proficient in the problem-solving approaches, both theoretical and experimental, used by physicists. - have an understanding of the main areas of physics, including mechanics, electricity and magnetism, wave phenomena (including optics), thermodynamics and quantum theory. - have a good understanding of laboratory instrumentation, and be able to design specialized instrumentation as needed.

Geophysical education at the Earth Physics Department begins at the 3rd year (6th semester) with the lecture course "Earth's Gravity and Magnetic Fields", given by V. A. Shashkanov , head of the Laboratory of Earth's Magnetism. At the same time, students also have to choose a topic for their course work. During the 4th year students continue their basic education in geophysics, which includes basic lecture courses in Geoelectricity Seismology , and Physics of the Sun. The 4th year's curriculum includes also Laboratory courses in Geophysics, which cover the same subjects as the lecture courses. To obtain the degree of Bachelor of Physics, students have to defend the graduate work, which usually consists of some short but self-consistent experimental study.
Academic courses: Earth's Gravity and Magnetic Fields (lecturer: V. A. Shashkanov The course consists of two parts that include questions of Earth's gravity and magnetism.
  • Gravity field - The task of this part is the introduction to the study of Earth's figure by gravitational method. Evolution of tideas of Earth's figure and ways to investigate it are summarised. Gravimetry is taught starting from basic ideas of Newton, Huygens, Clairaut. Idea of the figure of "normal" Earth is introduced and its surface distribution of gravity force is derived (Clairaut theorem). The main attention is given to the question of measuring of geoid (Stokes problem) and of physical Earth's surface (Molodensky problem). Theory of solar and lunar tides is reviewed. Principles of satellite gravimetry are analyzed.

Magnetic Poles, Forces, and Fields Every magnet has two poles. This is where most of its magnetic strength is most powerful. These poles are called north and south or north-seeking and south seeking poles. The poles are called this as when a magnet is hung or suspended the magnet lines up in a north - south direction. When the north pole of one magnet is placed near the north pole of another magnet, the poles are repelled. When the south poles of two magnets are placed near one another, they also are repelled from one another. When the north and south poles of two magnets are placed near one another, they are attracted to one another. The attraction repelling of two magnets towards one another depends on how close they are to each other and how strong the magnetic force is within the magnet. The further apart of the magnets are the less they are attracted or repelled to one another. When a magnet is broken into little pieces, a north pole will appear at one of the broken faces and a south pole. Each piece, regardless of how big or small, has its own north and south poles. The are around a magnet can also behave like a magnet. This is called a magnetic field. The larger the magnet and the closer the object to the magnet, the greater the force of the magnetic field.

The International Conference on Magnetism (ICM) belongs to a series of Conferences, held once every three years under the auspices of the International Union for Pure and Applied Physics (IUPAP), with the purpose of providing a forum to the international magnetism community for the discussion of new concepts, properties and developments in all branches of fundamental and applied magnetism, as well as in magnetic materials and their applications. The most recent conferences were held in Recife (2000), Cairns (1997), Warsaw (1994), Edinburgh (1991), Paris (1988) and San Francisco (1985).
In the year 2003, ICM will be held at the "Palazzo dei Congressi" - Roma, Italy, from Sunday, July 27 through Friday, August 1. It will also incorporate the Symposium on Strongly Correlated Electron Systems (SCES 2003).
The conference will be sponsored by the "Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche" (CNR) and by the other main national research institutions, among which the "Istituto Nazionale di Fisica della Materia", the Italian Physical Society, the "Istituto Elettrotecnico Nazionale Galileo Ferraris".

Theoretical Magnetism meeting Friday 21st June 2002, Oriel College , Oxford The annual one-day Theoretical Magnetism meeting, organised with support from the Institute of Physics Magnetism Group, is a forum for discussion of a wide spectrum of contemporary issues in magnetism theory and i ts interface with experiment. The meeting will include invited talks on low dimension quantum magnets (H-J. Mikeska, University of Hannover), quantum entanglement in spin chains (S. Bose, University of Oxford), magnetic anisotropy and x-ray dichroism (G. van der Laan, Daresbury Laboratory), and topological melting of spin-charge stripe order (J. Zaanen, University of Leiden). There will also be a small number of short contributed talks (~10 mins) and a poster session. Participants are encouraged to submit their work for either the poster or oral sessions.
The meeting will start at 10-30 am and finish at approx. 5 pm. Lunch will be included.
