Featured Beowulf Clusters
This is a short list of recently constructed clusters that are specifically interesting because of their size, construction or application. Typically these are quoted from the The Beowulf mailing list
If you know the technical details of an interesting project, please post it there. Keep in mind that the most relavent systems are not those that go to extremes to be pointlessly unique, but those systems that are reproducable and especially maintainable. Analysis of why specific components or configurations were chosen is especially useful.
http://space-simulator.lanl.gov/
The Space Simulator is a 294-processor Beowulf cluster. It is based on the Shuttle XPC SS51G mini chassis, which uses a heat pipe instead of a CPU fan. The small size of the XPC cases allowed us to fit the cluster in about half the space of the previous 144-processor Avalon cluster. Each node consists of a 2.53 GHz Pentium 4 processor, 1 Gb of 333 MHz DDR SDRAM, an 80 Gbyte Maxtor hard drive, and a 3Com 3C996B-T gigabit ethernet card. The cost of an individual node was less than $1000. The network switch is composed of a Foundry FastIron 1500 switch trunked to another FastIron 800 switch, which provides a total of 304 Gigabit Ethernet ports using the 16-port JetCore modules. The system was delivered in late September, 2002. It achieved Linpack performance of 665.1 Gflops on 288 processors in October 2002, making it the 85th fastest computer in the world according to the

The ARG will develop a community of representative application developers and users to actively test, evaluate and feedback on existing Grid services and software This page lists some of the research and development projects represented in the ARG, in the fields of grid applications, tools and testbeds. Project Description Representation ASC The Astrophysics Simulation Collaboratory (ASC) is a USA funded 3 year project joining 5 institutions to develop a collaboratory for the astrophysics community, based around Cactus and Globus, which will provide the capability of massively parallel computation with adaptive mesh refinement, advanced interactive visualization and meta-computing, targeted at enabling large scale simulations in relativistic astrophysics. The ASC are developing a Grid Simulation Portal and establishing a Grid Testbed for their users. Wai-Mo Suen
John Shalf
Ed Seidel Cactus Cactus is a collaborative, modular, parallel programming framework designed for scientists and engineers. Cactus already has infrastructure to support its use for Grid computing (driver layers, IO, checkpointing, steering, monitoring, remote tools, viz), and has been involved in many different Grid application demonstrations and development projects especially in distributed and dynamic Grid computing. The Cactus Team are involved in the GrADs and ASC projects.

Description
The development of an Astrophysics Simulation Collaboratory joins 5 institutions
  • Washington University
  • Rutgers University
  • National Center of Supercomputing Applications
  • University of Chicago
  • University of Illinois
in an NSF funded Knowledge and Distributed Intelligence program. The aims of the collaboratory are to develop tools for the collaborative research into problems of relativistic astrophysics. Central to the idea of the Collaboratory is the development of an Astrophysics Portal for the management and submission of large scale simulations using a wide range of computer resources. The portal is deployed on the ASC Grid , a testbed of supercomputing resources including machines at the NCSA, AHPCC, AEI, Washington University and SDSC.
ASC and Cactus
The development of the Astrophysics Simulation Collaboratory is being pursued with the involvement of the Cactus Team and collaborators. The ASC project will benefit Cactus mainly through the development of Simulation Portal The ASC portal is being built specifically around the Cactus code, although many of the components will be applicable to general simulation portals. This portal will not only bring new users to Cactus, but will help existing users make full and easy use of their available computing resources. We expect the ASC portal to serve as a prototype for a general Cactus Portal.

The European Grid Consortium
The European Grid Consortium (or E-Grid) is an open forum which aims to foster the cooperative use of distributed computing resources in Europe which are accessible via wide area networks. The Forum is made up of individuals from European research institutes, universities and companies. The E-Grid is closely related to the Grid Forum in the USA, and there are plans for both parties to form a Global Grid Forum in the near future
E-Grid and Cactus
The Cactus Team are closely involved with the activities of the European Grid Forum, in particular with the Working Group for Testbeds, which is headed by Ed Seidel. Cactus is being used by members of the E-Grid, along with the distributed computing toolkit Globus as an initial test application in a number of institutions. Through work with the EGrid Consortium, Cactus will benefit from the development of

PICK OF THE WEEK
(January 2, 1995)
On January 3, 1995, it was agreed that the Astronomy and Astrophysics pages in the WWW Virtual-Library at CERN, which are maintained by Sergio Paoli at La Plata, will be computed from the AstroWeb database, and that links in those pages which are not already in the AstroWeb database will be added to the database. Beginning April 3, the Virtual-Library pages are being computed from the AstroWeb database.
The pages with the old format of the WWW-VL: Astronomy and Astrophysics are still available and continously updated.
AstroWeb:
Astronomy/Astrophysics on the Internet
Welcome to AstroWeb - a collection of pointers to astronomy-related information available on the Internet. The database is maintained by the AstroWeb Consortium , a collaboration involving 9 individuals at 7 institutions. These CERN - La Plata AstroWeb pages are recomputed at about 06:30 UT each day, if the master database has been changed.
