This is a list of mailing lists, also known as "listservs." They are email discussion groups dedicated to topics of interest to educators. Each "subscriber" may contribute to the ongoing discussion, and any contributions are automatically forwarded to everyone on the list. To network among educators I suggest subscribing to one or several of the many mailrings available at The Teacher's Net . They have separate mailrings for each grade, along with specialty rings. It is the best source available in my opinion.

Introduction
There are many mailing lists for people who are interested in teaching English or foreign languages. We have compiled a list of about 40 mailing lists which might be interesting to you. We tried to include the names, computer addresses, list addresses, and, in some cases, descriptions, information about the list managers and their e-mail addresses, and our comments. The lists are listed alphabetically by list name. For your convenience, we made it possible to click computer addresses, where you send commands, and list addresses, where you post your messages. In order to use them, you need to register your e-mail address on the computer you are using, so that your e-mail message will show your return address. If you are not used to using mailing lists, we strongly suggest that you use TESL-L to get accustomed to posting messages, choosing commands for various purposes, etc. Then you will be able to use mailing lists effectively.

How to Design a Successful Project (c)
This article is based on " Telecommunications In The Classroom: Keys to Successful Telecomputing ," first published in the Computing Teacher in 1990. Check out our Hilites mailing list and Projects Registry for some great ideas. Over the years, Global SchoolNet (Formerly FrEdMail) Foundation has evolved a number of guidelines and principles which have led to many successful collaborative projects involving hundreds of classrooms and thousands of students. Like many aspects of successful teaching, we have found that planning is the key to success. The guidelines presented below have been validated in numerous highly successful classroom based projects on the FrEdMail Network. These guidelines, along with the template for writing you own "Call for Collaboration" will help guide you through a successful online learning experience with your students.
  • Design a project with specific goals, specific tasks, and specific outcomes. The more specific, the better; the more closely aligned with traditional instructional objectives, the better. Avoid "sister school" and "pen pal" projects.

E-Mail Class Mailing Lists Class Mailing Lists: Keep in Touch with your Students If you are an instructor at Ohio University, you can use our Class Mailing Lists web tool to automatically create and manage mailing lists for classes that you teach. By default, each list includes your Oak e-mail address and the Oak e-mail addresses of all students enrolled in that class. Adds and drops are processed automatically as they happen, so the list always reflects your course's current enrollment. After the end of the quarter in which the course is offered, the list is deleted automatically. How the Lists Work Sending and receiving messages to a class list is simple. When you create a list, the system automatically generates a name for that list that can be used to send mail to everyone on the list. For example, if the generated name of your class mailing list is 'eng100-a01-fal00-list', then the class mailing list's address would be 'eng100-a01-fal00-list@ohio.edu'. When you send a message to that address using your regular e-mail client, everyone on the list automatically receives a copy of your message. Replies work the same way. Once a list has been created, no special software is needed for sending or receiving class list messages. The list's e-mail address is all you and your students need to know.

Listserv Policy for Establishing Mailing Lists Information Technology Services (ITS) provides Listserv Mailing List Services to faculty and staff at Queen's University in support of Education, Research and Teaching. ITS at Queen's University does not provide mailing list services to students or to members of the Internet community. Queen's sanctioned student clubs who wish to communicate with their membership may request a UseNet News group from ITS. ITS has a responsibility to ensure these resources are being used responsibly, and must be in a position to take immediate corrective action should a problem occur. ITS will support LISTSERV based mailing lists that meet the following criteria:
  • A Queen's faculty or continuing staff member is designated as the List Owner and assumes ownership and responsibility for the operation of the list. Primary List Owner e-mail addresses must belong to a real person and are not generic e-mail accounts.

Is there a mailing list for the project?
Yes. There are several. They are listed below. However, please check out the FAQ , the documentation , and the bug reporting guidelines before sending email to a mailing list.
I have a question! Should I just send it to one (or all) of the mailing lists below?
That depends. Have you adequately researched your question already? Cygwin is not a new project. It's been around for more than five years. That means that almost any question that you are burning to ask has probably already been asked. Almost every observation that you can make has probably been made. Almost every suggestion for improvement that you can think of has probably been suggested. So, rather than send YA "same old" observation to one of the mailing lists below, and possibly be flamed as a result, you owe it to yourself to do some background research before posting. Places to check for information would be the Cygwin FAQ , the Cygwin documentation , the web , and the mailing list archives (click on a mailing list name below to search the archive). Using one of these methods, it's likely that you'll be able to find the answers that you seek without sending email to thousands of people and you'll have the satisfaction of having gained valuable research skills.

    Class-based mailing lists
You may or may not be aware that MAILSERV-based mailing lists are available for the classes you teach. These mailing lists replace the private distribution lists that were provided prior to Summer 1997. These mailing lists allow you, your students, and interested outsiders to communicate with each other outside the classroom via e-mail messages. In addition, a roster of your class will be e-mailed to you as an added benefit. The information contained in the roster may/should be suitable for importing into a spreadsheet or other electronic gradebook. To request a list, please provide me with the department, course, and section numbers for the class(es) desired. Section numbers are necessary even for single-section classes because they are not always numbered "01". Also, please do this via e-mail rather than telephone to avoid potential errors in the translation. Finally, if you have multiple e-mail accounts, please submit your request from the one that you will be using for list participation and management during the semester. If you have questions about any of this, please don't hesitate to ask. Contact
