Step 1 - Benefits Of Mailing Lists Mailing lists are like forums, except that you receive postings via email instead of reading them via a web site. There are thousands of mailing lists, all tailored to specific interests, hobbies, business needs and more. Generally, they are either moderated (a live human bean must approve the postings) or unmoderated (anything goes). Mailing lists promote a sense of community. This is very valuable when you are learning about your candidate base! Not only that, but you can roll your own mailing list for opt-in weekly hot jobs, career questions and the like. Consider Sunbelt Software - they even have an NT sysadmin resume mailing list!

Electronic Mailing Lists
A mailing listalso referred to as a listserv or a listis a way of mailing a message once and sending it to an entire group of people. A list can serve any number of people, and as the list owner you have a high degree of control over the makeup of the list, the content of the discussions, and the general usefulness of the list. The Benefits of a Mailing List
One major advantage over a newsgroup is the fact that you can set your listserv up to have a limited membership. If a student is participating in an undesirable manner, you can remove him or her from the list, thereby cutting disruptive comments out of the discussion. A listserv also serves very well to broadcast messages to a large number of people. You have more than likely received messages with pages of addresses at the top. This can be infuriating for the receiver and often leads to messages being ignored. Using a listserv helps to prevent this problem.

and the Web
This page was created for the several workshops I have conducted at USD, including the December, 1998 "Teaching Cultural Competency Skills Through Simulation" workshop and the College Theology Society's 1997 Teaching Workshop "Computers, Technology, and Teaching: Pushing the Boundaries." It contains links to Internet assignments I've created and resources that I've used in the process. I've found that using these technologies in a way that truly contributes to the student's experience is not all that easy. I'm working at it, with some successes and some mistakes. Suggestions appreciated questions welcomed lnelson@sandiego.edu

E-mail Software Distribution Lists Mailing Lists World Wide Web ... Miscellaneous Resources
E-mail Software Most of these programs are excellent for sending "attached files." But note that, unlike Pine (the Unix program available on the USD internet computers), these programs take your mail off the server and store it directly on your own hard drive. If you get e-mail at more than one computerat home and at work, for exampleyou should set the software (e.g., Eudora) on your secondary machine to "leave mail on server/host" and the software on your primary machine to "delete mail from server/host." Otherwise, if you read your mail on the secondary machine first, it'll be on that hard drive only, and you'll not be able later to retrieve or store it on your primary machine.

49. Update To Creation Of Class Mailing Lists
Class mailing lists are updated daily. Also, the faculty who are registeredto teach the course will be added to the class mailing list.
http://www.udel.edu/topics/e-mail/maillist/classlist.html
    Class Mailing Lists
Mailing lists are available for every course section in the 2 previous, current, and next terms. These lists can be accessed by sending a message to a mailing list address which is constructed from the course sequence number. The syntax of the mailing list name is as follows:
  • the three or four character department code the three digit course number a hyphen the three digit section number a hyphen the term code @udel.edu
For example, the mailing list to send a message to every student registered for section 100 of CISC 105 during the 1997 Fall term would be: CISC105-100-97F@udel.edu Term Codes Letter Abbreviations for the Semesters
  • F=Fall W=Winter S=Spring J=Summer
Department Codes and Course Descriptions for Academic Year 2001-2002 Class Mailing List Recipients All students officially registered for a particular course are automatically added to the class mailing lists. Class mailing lists are updated daily. Also, the faculty who are registered to teach the course will be added to the class mailing list. Faculty will then be aware of a student in their class who might send out a mass mailing, and can deal with that. A Reminder about proper usage Class mailing lists are useful tools for classroom communication. Their use was temporarily suspended in Spring 96 due to abuse of the system by persons who sent messages to several class mailing lists simultaneously, thereby generating thousands of messages. This type of action is a violation of the University's policy on responsible computing. Please take great care with the following.

Mailman is the mailing list software that we use on LISTS. It automates the process of maintaining a mailing list of people, archives, digests, and special files and commands accessible to mailing list members. Please note that Mailman is not supported software here at USD: you are welcome to use it, and I will try to make it as easy as I can. But you need to understand how to use both the Mailman software as well as your own e-mail software. Also, consider making extensive use of the list management web page. If you still do not understand this Unix software, you might want to consider using something like Macjordomo on the Macintosh.
