Maine - A State Unit Study This mini unit on MAINE uses the cross curricular approach to education. There are several activities from different academic subjects for you to choose from. One of the most important things is to have fun! Below are some activities to help you study MAINE. You may choose to do all, some, or none of the activities. You can also alter the activities to better suit your individual child's needs. Some of these activities overlap each other, choose the one you think that you and the children will enjoy most. The main point of this unit is to make learning about ALABAMA and enjoyable for all who are participating. Maine's State Flag The state coat of arms is placed on a blue field. In the center of the shield a moose rests under a tall pine tree. A farmer and seaman represents the work that people did in early times. The North Star represents the state motto: "Dirigo". ("I Direct" ) Flag adopted 1909. Create a State "Infodesk": Before you begin this unit you may want to set up a research area. Place a desk or table in front of a bulletin board area. This will be where you can place relevant books, magazines, photographs, posters, newspaper articles, maps, scrapbooks, games, puzzles, computer software, task cards, travel brochures, etc. that you collect. Print a blank map of the state, or draw one on tag board, that you can place on the bulletin board. As you study the political and physical features of the state, have the children fill in the name of the state capital, large cities, and major geographical features. Color the map using different shades for varying elevations.

    • They have six, nearly universal, features: They are walkable from end to end. They have a civic core and a mix of neighborhood uses They have a street network that is interconnected They have recognizable boundaries that separate one neighborhood from another. They have a human scale. They provide for both chance meetings and personal privacy through their street, sidewalk, and lot design

Building Maine Communities Through the Arts and Culture
    The Vision:
I want my son Jack and your sons and daughters to find opportunities here in Maine. I want to make Maine a leader in providing opportunity for ALL Mainers - north, south, east, and west. That means good jobs with benefits, an educated workforce, a clean environment, health care for all Mainers, and a stable climate for businesses, both large and small. To do this, we need bold and creative action.
    Achieving the Vision
Today, after a full generation of organized effort by many individuals and groups, we can say with pride that, in the arts and culture, Maine has it all! A vigorous cultural life exists in all parts of Maine, in every community. In 2000, the creative sector of our economy employed fully 14,000 people. Maine has not, however, taken full advantage for our people of the creative economy, as have other states in New England. What we possess as a state in the arts and cultural resources is truly remarkable; and the prospect of connecting these resources with a new, creative economic model presents a great opportunity for Maine and for all Maine communities. The following five steps will make this connection; strengthen our families, our communities, and our cultural institutions; and create the beginnings of a public/private, state cultural policy for Maine:
  • Promote the Role of the Arts in Maine Public Education

CenterPoint Energy maintains its Electric Network in an ArcGIS 8.1 Geodatabase format. The Engineering Department and Field construction crew record the changes happening in the field on a daily basis in the form of Work Order sketches, which are mostly schematic in nature. Avineon has been contracted to correctly analyze and interpret these work orders and relate these sketches to the appropriate location on the GIS and post these work orders onto the CenterPoint Energy Electric Geodatabase.
Engineers at Avineon's state-of-the-art Production facility in India connect to the CenterPoint GIS server located in Houston, TX, via a 512 Kbps dedicated Internet bandwidth connectivity. The CenterPoint GIS Server is setup on Citrix Metaframe Win 2000 Client- Server architecture. The connection to the Citrix server is established over a secure, encrypted Virtual Private Network (VPN) and each user gets connected on a Direct I.P. This allows the Production Engineers in India to access all applications hosted by CenterPoint Energy on their Citrix application manager. The Engineers launch CenterPoint's Metro Electric ArcMap application and view and post the work orders in the CenterPoint Electric Geodatabase on a 2-shift basis, 7 days a week.
