Organizations Supporting School Improvement:
Many of the United States provide some form of intermediate service centers to support educators who are working on state reform initiatives. In Illinois these are called Regional Offices of Education. In Michigan these are called Intermediate School Districts. In that case, ISDs have boundaries that overlap regular school districts and have their own taxing authority. In New York and Colorado these agencies are called BOCES which stands for Board of Cooperative Educational Services. If you don't know how to access assistance from these agencies, click here to link to the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) which can connect you to the state board of education in your state. You should be able to find out there if such agencies are in your state. The only USA exception is Hawaii which has one school district for the entire state and so, the state provides the assistance directly.
In some countries, like Canada, the assistance for school improvement comes from provincial "ministries" of education. In other countries, like Singapore and Great Britain, the Ministry of Education is for the whole nation.

to Diana Haskell
Diana Haskell, a speech and language teacher and a very highly regarded teaching professional, prepared and presented an outstanding one-day workshop last November on phonemic awareness. Participants included K-3 teachers, special educators and several educational technicians. Her presentation provided a solid introduction to the works of Dr. Candice Bray and other scholars. We now have a better understanding of some of the numerous underlying skills that are essential to a child's ability to manipulate sounds and acquire the language skills necessary to facilitate reading and writing. We wish to thank Diana for this thorough and meaningful presentation. Recently, Diana accepted a new teaching position. We would like to take this opportunity to extend our sincere best wishes to Diana in her new professional position. She will be greatly missed by the hundreds of students, parents, and faculty members who have worked with her during her many years of dedicated employment throughout this union. Joanne Beal University of Maine, Machias M. Ed. 1998
Darlene Dowling University of Maine, Machias M. Ed. 1998 Joanne sought some financial support for her take-home reading program and they responded wholeheartedly by offering to match two dollars for every one she and her students raised! Several months, many bake sales, and thousands of pennies later, the goal was met. The Mission’s assistant superintendent, Jackie Davidson, spent a day visiting the classroom and meeting all the eager readers. At the end of the day, Ms. Davidson reflected that…"this little corner of the world is a better place because a dedicated woman is working hard to make a real difference in the lives of her students." WELCOME We wish to welcome the following new staff members: SUMNER MEMORIAL HIGH SCHOOL Sean has a bachelor degree from Farmington. He is currently working on a master degree in education. He graduated from Central Aroostook High School. He was a substitute for Presque Isle High School last year. His subject area is math and business economics. Sean is a ski coach and instructor for Sugarloaf. He enjoys mountain biking, working with wood, and cross-country skiing.

Students Give New Laptops High Mid-TERM Grades ; Lawmakers Recommend Leaving the Program Intact After Reviewing a Report Showing Its Positive Impact.

Portland Press Herald
TESS NACELEWICZ Staff Writer March 14, 2003
Thirteen-year-old Jeremy Harmon says that learning on a laptop computer is more fun than just reading a book. "You can be more involved with the work and we can do a lot more stuff, like spreadsheets," the seventh-grader at Portland's Lyman Moore Middle School said Thursday. His comments echo those of other seventh-graders who participated in a state study of the impact that Maine's unique laptop computer initiative is having, halfway through its first year. Among the findings were that 88.5 percent of students agreed that laptops make schoolwork more fun. The study involved a survey that was distributed to the state's 17,223 seventh-graders who received Apple iBook computers last fall, and to their teachers and school administrators.

Welcome to Lee Academy
Who we are
What Makes Us Unique?
There are many fine schools in America. Many of the finest are in New England, where we are located. So what makes us special? Our rural lifestyle lends itself to developing friendships. Students are known here. We make time to build relationships, a process which is at the heart of real learning. Maine is a remarkably safe state, and our part of Maine is a place where young people feel particularly secure as they develop their understandings about America and its diverse cultures. We value and enjoy young people! A hallmark of a Lee Academy education, is the lifelong friendships which form here. We have an active alumni association, we provide college application services to current students and alumni, and our graduates stay connected to us, through return visits, letters, and e-mail. We want you to succeed and we make sure that you have the resources to do so. Our Learning Enhancement Center is open to all students. Math students from our championship math teams form the staff for our math lab. Speaking of mathematics, we have a long history of state championship math teams, a tradition which continues, now. We also have a special awareness of the need to actively encourage math and science challenges for young women.

Writing has always been one of his hobbies, and is very happy to now have an audience other than himself.
