    Geography
Geography is the discipline with the use of earth space. It examines the relationship of people and places and how they relate to the physical and human environment. Geographers identify and analyze the regional and global patterns that shape our lives. UMF offers the only geography major in the state, therefore, our program offers expert faculty and valuable practicum experience with our state-of-the-art Spatial Analysis Lab, and courses in Geographic Information Science Systems. UMF is located near the urban centers of New England and southeastern Canada, which provides easy access to a wealth of field study opportunities in contrasting cultures and land-use patterns. Faculty encourage students to pursue their own interests within geography, including such areas as economic, political, cultural and medical geography. As a student majoring in geography you will get hands-on experience using GPS and GIS systems, working with nearby state and local governments through internships and field work, taking international and national travel courses, and presenting research at state and national geographic forums. As a graduate you are prepared for jobs in state agencies, companies with environmental concerns, and graduate school.

    Geography
Over 80% of Maine is forested with great stands of white pine, hemlock, spruce, fir, and hardwoods. Sheltered by the woods and with abundant water from numerous lakes, particularly in the northern counties, wildlife includes moose, deer, black bear, and smaller animals; fish and fowl are also plentiful. The population of Maine is centered on the cleared land along the coast and major rivers. Augusta is the capital; Portland Lewiston , and Bangor are the largest cities. Maine's two great parks are Acadia National Park on and around Mt. Desert Island; and Baxter State Park, which includes the northern end of the Appalachian Trail at Mt. Katahdin in the N Maine wilderness.

Unique geography, from mountain ranges to islands to plateaus, and a northern location define Maine’s distinct seasons and varied climate. Maine’s extreme geographic location dictates a vast range in temperatures, with very cold, snowy winters and mild summers. Average temperatures in January range from to 20 degrees F (-18 to -7 c) in the north to 10 to 30 degrees F (-12 to -1 c) in the south, while average July temperatures vary from 54 to 78 degrees F (12 to 26 c) statewide. Average annual precipitation ranges from 40 to 45 inches (102 to 114 cm) statewide. Average snowfall, however, varies drastically from as little as 50 to 70 inches (127 to 178 cm) near the coast to 90 to 110 inches (229 to 279 cm) inland, falling mostly between November and March.

REACHING NEW STANDARDS: GIS AND K-12 GEOGRAPHY
    Sarah W. Bednarz
    Department of Geography
    College Station, Texas 77843-3147
ABSTRACT GIS is slowly becoming a part of geography instruction in elementary and secondary schools in the United States. This paper reviews progress in the adoption of GIS in K-12 geography. A contemporary theory of learning, constructivism, is used to analyze the role GIS can play in teaching geography and to build a case for its importance. Two models of teaching GIS are presented and illustrated. An argument is made that further research and careful evaluation of K-12 GIS programs are essential to justify further dissemination efforts. Key words: National Geography Standards, GIS, K-12 education, constructivism PROGRESS The growth of GIS in geography is evident from the increase in the number of workshops and sessions devoted to the topic at national meetings of K-12 geography teachers. Anecdotal evidence such as informal discussions and reports of projects in a variety of locations indicates that many geography teachers are more than just interested in GIS. They have begun to use it in a variety of innovative ways. Like any technological innovation, making GIS an integral part of geography instruction will take time. The process of adoption takes place in four stages: awareness (What is GIS?), understanding (How can I

"Notes of Geography, Etc." from the Garland Section of the 1882 History of Penobscot County, Maine
Garland is bounded on the south by Exeter; Dover, in Piscataquis County, lies on the north; Charleston on the east; and Dexter on the west. It would be nearly very an even township of six miles on each side and thirty-six square miles, but for the irregularity observable in the line between it and Exeter which lengthens that line, the south boundary of Garland, about thirty rods, and shortens the west line to five and five-eighths miles. A GEOGRAPHY THEME USING THE BOOK SARAH, PLAIN AND TALL
    LINDA BONTRAGER
Grade Level: Time: The time for this lesson will depend upon the students. Some areas will take more time than others. This is a theme study and a certain amount of time must be set aside each day for each subject area to be covered.
    Geographic Theme
Location, Place, Human Environment, Regions, Movement
    Purpose
Geography can be taught using a variety of books. In first grade students love to be read aloud to. To use literature and add a geography lesson from that piece of literature is exciting and fun. A theme can move smoothly from one subject matter to the next by using children's literature. The classroom must reflect this by having centers/stations arranged for the children to have a hands-on experience. Art work and written work needs to show all subject areas are being covered.
    Objectives
    The student will:
    • be attentive to the reading of Sarah Plain and Tall
    • locate Maine and Kansas on the wall map and desk map and put a large round sticky dot on each state and stretch a piece of twine from Maine to Kansas.
