The Chronicle Herald Is geography destiny for eastern Canada? By Brian Lee Crowley THE WOMEN'S movement revolutionized everyone's thinking by answering no to the question "Is biology destiny?" Nature didn't limit women to childcare and homemaking. They could be professionals, managers and anything else they chose. The history of the past few decades has been in large part about playing out the consequences of that realization, with tremendous benefits for women and society at large. The revolutionary question in the coming decades for this corner of North America is not about biology, but geography. For a century and more, geography has shaped our destiny in a way that was largely beyond our control. That era has ended, but we have not yet seized control of our lives again. The corner of North America I'm referring to is not just Atlantic Canada. It also embraces the sliver of the Unites States that reaches from Maine through New Hampshire and Vermont and into northern New York State. That wedge of territory, which some are now calling Atlantica, has been outside the charmed circle of North American prosperity for years. The reasons are buried deep in our history. Especially after the Americans rejected Reciprocity and Confederation was born, the continent was divided into two national projects. Each sought to open up its half of the continent on an east-west axis. Each had a funnel on the East Coast that caught the energies of Europe and channelled them toward the conquest of the continent.

presents "The World's Place in Maine: Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow" July 6 - July 16, 1999 a summer institute for Maine teachers See Below for Application 1999 Summer Institute The goal of the ten-day institute is to improve the geographic knowledge of Maine teachers and provide the opportunity for them to fine tune their ability to create, teach, and present well taught lessons to their students and peers. This year's institutes focuses on: 1) learning basic physical geography content in a field school setting and 2) studying Maine's cultural, historical, and economic links to the world both past and present. Field experiences will center first in the Western Mountains and later along the Maine coast from Portland to Belfast. Participants are asked to bring a geography related lesson with them and work during the institute to link it to Maine's Learning Results and the national Geography standards. All will work on creating standards-based assessment tools that they can use in their classrooms in the fall. Participants are required to attend an orientation session in mid-May and a follow-up retreat in October. They will be required to host 2 local workshops in the fall of 1999 and participate in Geography Awareness week planning and implementation in their own districts.

  • The Power of Place: A Brief Introduction to Maine Writers
By Amanda L. Christy The word 'Maine' for most people conjures up images of rocky shores, pine trees, and lobster dinners. Those who have visited know that crossing the Piscataqua River and entering New England's largest state means entering another world. A big blue sign on the border proclaims "Welcome to Maine – the Way Life Should Be." And it is. The physical beauty of Maine's geography alone approaches the mythical: mountainous lake regions, the Great North Woods, rugged coastline, and vast potato fields. Harsh winters melt into magical summers. Life moves a little more slowly, and the savoring of it is a little more important. Sitting in my lush backyard on a perfect summer day, it is easy to understand why so many writers have felt drawn to this place. Maine is steeped in the New England literary tradition that continues to influence the active artistic community that thrives here today. This overview is intended to provide a brief introduction to this rich heritage. It includes both native writers and those

    CHAPTER 6
    THE BYPASSED EAST
A map of America's eastern seaboard reveals a lack of large cities along the coast north of Boston. Few major overland routes extend inland from this coast, and interior cities are generally smaller than those along the ocean. This area, comprising northern New England and the Adirondacks of New York, can be referred to as the Bypassed East ( Map 5 The Bypassed East is near, even astride, major routeways, but not on them. Ocean transportation can easily bypass the region, putting it in a transportation shadow that has produced slow regional economic growth and even stagnation. Southern New England is a part of metropolitan America. Northern New England, for the most part, is not. It is much more like Canada's Atlantic Provinces. THE PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT Much of the Bypassed East is beautiful. The Presidential Range in the White Mountains of New Hampshire contains some of the most rugged topography in the eastern United States. The extensive shoreline thrusts out into the Atlantic and meets the ocean's waves with a heavily indented coast that mixes dramatic headlands with many small coves bordered by rocky beaches. Large empty areas, almost totally lacking in settlement, are only hours away from some of the largest cities on the continent. Most of the Bypassed East is a part of the northeastern extension of the Appalachian Uplands. However, the structure of the area bears little surface resemblance to the clearly delineated ridge and valley system of the southern Appalachians.
