There are distinct benefits to the use of GIS technology: GIS can fundamentally improve the quality of learning in the classroom, widen the scope of teaching and help transition children into the information rich society in which they will live. In K-12 education, GIS presents a new way of exploring the geosciences and coupled with global communications (such as the internet) it provides a unique way of linking children with researchers, (state and educational) and processing geographical data of disparate scale and theme. But the utilization of GIS technology is not as simple as placing a purchase order. A number of impediment exist to its successful utilization: teacher training, curriculum integration (among a variety of disciplines in addition to the geosciences), equipment purchase, and provision of curriculum material. There exists a need to better integrate GIS and visually oriented education within the K-12 curriculum. It is important to keep the child's interests as the focus of attention and identify areas in which technology can support and offer new opportunities in the educational process. This paper seeks to highlight the problem and potentials of GIS technology in the classroom.

This paper reviews progress in the adoption of GIS in K-12 geography. A contemporary theory of learning, constructivism, is used to analyze the role GIS can play in teaching geography and to build a case for its importance. Two models of teaching GIS are presented and illustrated. An argument is made that further research and careful evaluation of K-12 GIS programs are essential to justify further dissemination efforts. "Empowering all students to create fulfilling lives in a changing world" Instructional Support Jane Golding, Director Instructional Support Handbook The Special Services staff continues to work as a team to coordinate services for all students in grades K-12. Team members include: Guidance Counselors, School Nurses, School Psychologist, Social Worker, Substance Abuse Counselor, Behavior Intervention Specialist, and Director of Special Services. The team works with families to secure appropriate resources for food, clothing, housing, and medical/dental needs. At various times during the year food and gifts are delivered to families in need. Student Assistance Teams continue to meet at each school. Students referred to these teams are considered to be at-risk and possibly in need of additional services such as Chapter 1, Tutorial Assistance, classroom modifications, referral to special education for evaluation, provision of mentors, big brother or sisters, or a support group. The Student Assistance Team also serves as the 504 Team at each building. Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act prohibits discrimination against handicapped persons. The 504 Team review the nature of the student's handicap, whether specialized services are needed, and if so, what those services would be. The Student Assistance Team is also acting as a language assessment committee which facilitates the identification and program placement of students who are limited in English proficiency. They coordinate and oversee the educational program of limited English proficient (LEP) students working with the tutor of English as a second language (ESL).
