    INTRODUCTION
In the 21st century, our ability to learn, communicate and share information will increasingly depend upon access to technology and the ability to apply it effectively to our personal and professional lives. President Clinton has played a central role in getting the nation's attention focused on the need for Internet access in schools. Yet, despite massive investments in computers and wiring, many schools are still unprepared to use it effectively for one simple reason: the quality and quantity of teacher training is lacking. National Semiconductor believes it can play an important role in addressing this problem. As a global company in one of today's most competitive, fast-paced industries, National views its use of the Internet as a competitive advantage. In much the same way, the company believes that students entering the workforce with the ability to access and discover information on the Internet will have an advantage when competing for jobs in the "information age."

INTERNET ACCESS HAS BECOME A NATIONAL PRIORITY
President Clinton's State of the Union speech on January 23, 1996 drew national attention to the importance of the Internet in education: "Every classroom in America must be connected to the information superhighway with computers, good software and well-trained teachers."
