Library and Information Services
The Scarborough School Department Library and Information Services Program ensures each student has equal access to a quality Library and Information Center (LIC) in his/her building. Twenty-first Century Library and Information Centers provide the student with classic and modern literature as well as a wide range of information resources selected to support and supplement academic curricula. Information resources come in a wide variety or media including books, videos, reference resources, journals, network databases, CD ROMs and the Internet. Additionally, the Library and Information Services program connects the student to the information at "the point of learning." Utilizing current and emerging technologies, every student has a gateway to a number of LIC information and research databases with the classroom. These databases include, for example, the library catalogs, magazine indexes, full-text periodical articles, current events as well as a multitude of research and reference sites. The Library and Information Services program also offers students and staff information literacy curriculum and support programs. The programs support staff and students in learning how to access the many resources through scheduled classes, one-on-one tutoring, workshops, professional resource libraries, and reference material.

Departments > Letters "It pays to be a team player and avoid confrontation with administrators and parents." Truth and Consequences I am a middle school librarian as well as a reference librarian in a public library. I feel that there should not be any controversial materials in public school libraries that would offend or upset children and/or their parents. Public school librarians who ardently argue in favor of anti-censorship are only spiting themselves. For instance, Cheryl Ward, the former librarian at the Windsor Locks Middle School in Connecticut, is now teaching fifth grade at another school as a result of not cooperating and being insubordinate [ "Connecticut Librarian Sues School District over Transfer,"October 1998

Site Map February 1999 Maine: Out Of The Woods And Into The Call Center Islands floating in the gray morning fog across the water, which slowly swirls about and breaks on the rocks and laps against the boats that rise and fall with its swells, a fog horn is lowering its doleful tune in the distance: Morning in Maine, quiet on the shore or in the deep woods. But there is another Maine, beyond the peaceful retreat of the tourist postcard: ever-greater numbers of the people of Maine heading off to work. One of the main forces in getting more people in Maine back to work is Governor Angus King Jr. (until the recent event in Minnesota spotlighted the disquieting influence of pop culture on politics, the only independent governor in the nation). Speak with Governor King, and you will quickly notice that he cannot conceal his pride in the virtues of the people of Maine. "People distinguish Maine," he espouses. Among the many assets of the people of Maine he cites is the loyalty of Maine's workforce. "The average industry worker in Maine has been with the same company for 16 years," he said.

    FOR PROSPECTIVE STUDENTS
    Fellows of distinction
Twenty high school seniors are selected each year to be new Journalism and Communications Fellows at Elon.
Our freshman Fellows this year hail from Maine and Florida, Ohio and West Virginia, Maryland and New Jersey, two apiece from Georgia, Pennsylvania, Tennessee and Virginia, and six from North Carolina. Eleven are male, and nine are female. They are the third Fellows class in the School of Communications. Members of the first class now are junior Fellows, and the second class are sophomore Fellows.
Journalism and Communications Fellows are among the most active students on campus. For example, freshman Fellows learn how to operate television cameras and how to direct a show. A group of advanced Fellows is producing a documentary on the media coverage of the civil rights movement, which includes interviews with journalists who covered the events.
Theoretical concepts learned in special Fellows courses come alive as students gain real-world experience working with the student-run newspaper, radio or television, the campus film society or through an internship at a regional or national media site.
