October 27, 2000 UMFK Looking to Forge Stronger Ties With Nova Scotia University College
Fort Kent - The President of a Canadian Maritime university, where a large number of current University of Maine at Fort Kent (UMFK) education certification students receive four-year degrees, will visit the Fort Kent campus on Monday, October 30, and Tuesday, October 31, as part of an ongoing effort to establish stronger ties between the two schools. Dr. Jacquelyn Scott, President and Vice-Chancellor of tUniversity College of Cape Breton (UCCB), a school of about 3,400 students located in Sydney, Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, will be in the St. John Valley this coming week to meet with UMFK officials and to tour the university.
"The theme of this visit is partnership," said UMFK President Charles Lyons. "We are particularly interested in developing an articulation agreement with UCCB that will lessen both the debt load and credit load that education certification students face when attending UMFK. In the future, we intend to extend invitations to other colleges and universities in the region that have historically educated large numbers of our certification candidates and develop similar agreements."
Currently, UMFK enrolls 287 foreign students of which 240 are attending from the Province of Nova Scotia. Of that number, 113 attended UCCB.

Back to Home ... Living Wednesday, Apr 09, 2003 Education Posted on Mon, Oct. 07, 2002 Teacher certification pushed National board has approved thousands of applicants, but few in Pa. or N.J. take part. By Melanie Burney Inquirer Staff Writer WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP French teacher Catherine Russo is a novelty in her Gloucester County district. She is the only Washington Township educator to achieve national board certification and one of just 46 in New Jersey. In Pennsylvania, 47 teachers hold the honor. Russo, who teaches seventh and eighth graders at Chestnut Ridge Middle School, was certified in 1997 by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards. "It's probably the most productive form of professional development I've ever done," said Russo, a teacher for 12 years. While national certification has been embraced by educators across the country, it has been slow to catch on in New Jersey. Nationwide, more than 16,000 teachers have received the certification. A new group will be named next month from among 20,000 candidates.
