Lonely Planet Lonely Planet guide to Malawi and the world Order Now
Malawi Culture The African peoples in Malawi are all of Bantu origin. The main ethnic groups ('tribes') are the Chewa, dominant in the central and southern parts of the country; the Yao, also found in the south; and the Tumbuka in the north. There are very small populations of Asian and European people living mainly in the cities. The different ethnic groups in Malawi each have their own language or dialect. The Chewa are the dominant group and their language, called Chewa or Chichewa, is the common national tongue widely used throughout the country. English is the official language and is very widely spoken, particularly in main towns, but sometimes also in remote rural areas. Of the other languages spoken in Malawi, Tumbuka is spoken by about 500,000 people in the north, and Yao is spoken by about 600,000 people in the south. Most people in Malawi are Christian, usually members of one of the Protestant churches founded by missionaries in the late 19th century. There are Muslims in the north, especially along Lake Malawi - a legacy of the Arab slave traders who operated in this area. Alongside the established religions, many Malawians also hold traditional animist beliefs. Malawian artists who have achieved recognition for their work inside the country and abroad include Cuthy Mede (probably the best known), Kay Chirombo, Willie Nampeya and Louis Dimpwa. They work in various media, producing carvings in stone and wood, batiks and paintings.

4.2 EXISTING STRENGTHS AND OPPORTUNITIES There is a strong traditional education system in the form of initiation rites. The curricula of this system could be reviewed to emphasize moral training, development of essential social skills and teach sex and sexuality, including the dangers of HIV/AIDS. Many NGOs and government departments are also working in the area of culture and HIV/AIDS or culture and social development such as the GABLE Project whose experiences HIV/AIDS control programmes can utilize. A number of interventions by religious and other organizations are already addressing issues of culture as it relates to the HIV/AIDS epidemic and offer opportunity for expansion. Malawian culture is itself rich in norms, values, beliefs and practices which promote ideals of fidelity, mutual faithfulness and communal obligations to each other which should form the basis for planning interventions. Misanet.com / The Nation (Malawi) - The Malawian newspaper The Nation in a background chronicle presents the country's National Archives. The history of the archives dates back to the early days of the British Protectorate. "Underscore from its humble beginning at independence, the National Archives of Malawi has grown to become one of the well-organised archival institutions in this part of Africa," the author writes. Brief History The early development of archival services in the then British Central African Protectorate was largely due to the efforts of some British ministers. For instance, in March 1914, Lord Harcourt, the Secretary of State for the Colonies, asked his colonial governors to "furnish me (him) with a brief report as to the existing arrangements for the custody and preservation of the older official records of the government which you (they) administer." In 1929, L. S. Amery demanded to be apprized not only the condition of the state of organisation of the records themselves. His successor as Colonial Secretary, W. O. Ormsby Gore, revisited the situation and followed it up with a colonial dispatch in which he emphasised that:

They find a true transformation since the Banda dictatorship, but they also warn that 'intimidation and tolerance, old and new, exist side by side in Malawi's political pluralism.' Editor Harri Englund asks the question: 'Is there a culture of politics beyond mere greed?' in the introduction of the just released book, ŒA Democracy of Chameleons - Politics and Culture in the New Malawi'. While some chapters underline the new freedoms and the political will to solve the country's profound structural problems, others focus on the maintenance of structures and persons from the defeated dictatorship.
