Owls in Lore and Culture
Page 6
CONCLUSION By incorporating owls once again into our modern cultures, and by understanding the roles they have played in diverse societies throughout the world and do play in ecosystems, we can admit and proffer their legitimacy as denizens of those environments we otherwise seek to exploit. Owls have served as marvellous and fantastic symbols of recreation, aesthetics, art, science, lore, political power, ethics, and even death. In the case of owls, the deep fears and anxieties they generated and the prophetic status they once held, and still hold in some cultures, present environmentalists with a handle with which to engage the interest and sympathies of a wider audience. By inviting owls into a full cultural circle, we can build a more tolerant understanding of all societies and ages, and incorporate wildlife conservation into the broader tapestry of human endeavors. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS Our thanks to those who searched for or helped us trace stories of owl lore: Ajai Saxena, V.B. Sawarkar, and Baban, India; Eric Hansen, United States; and Max Sova, Russia, Armenia, and Central Asia.

Culture and Health

My research here is concerned with elucidating how individuals (patients and clinicians), health service organisations, local communities and societies are influenced by, and represent, cultural constructions of illness and health. The Muzuzu Project The Barretstown Project is investigating the experience of chronic illness in children attending Barretstown, who are drawn from 14 different European countries; The Irish Diaspora Project is evaluating a model of acculturation in terms of its ability to explain the relatively poor health of Irish immigrants to Britain, Australia and the United States of America; The Irish Travellers Project is a follow-up study of a cohort of Travellers (mothers) who were first studied ten years ago. Our primary concern is to establish how Traveller culture, social, economic and political marginalisation, levels of social support and poor environmental living conditions, interact to influence the well-being of Traveller women and their children. The Environmental Self Project is concerned with the effects of perceived environmental threats on self identity and well being. Each of the above projects is being worked on by a doctoral research student. Currently my research on culture and health is supported by Smith Kline Beacham, Irish-American Partnership, APSO, Health Research Board and the Eastern Health Board.

Project management for the Central and Northern Regions Fish Farming Project
The Central and Northern Regions Fish Farming Project (CNRFFP) was implemented over the period 1989 - 1995. It was financed by the Government of Malawi and the European Commission. The main aim of the project was to establish over a five year period, the technical and economic parameters for developing fish farming in Northern and Central Malawi. The project carried out research, established extension stations, provided training, and developed an effective extension team over the course of the project. The project was implemented by the Malawi Department of Fisheries with Technical Assistance from a three man team from Stirling Aquaculture and Fisheries Development Ltd. Some local help whilst surveying the proposed research station site The first phase of the project concentrated on the construction of the headquarters and main research facilities at Mzuzu in the Northern Region. Further development involved the establishment of 9 further extension stations, five of which had additional research ponds. When fully staffed the project had around 12 professional staff, 7 technical/research staff, 12 extensionists, 10 administrative staff and over 40 non-established staff.
Research activities focused mainly on local species of tilapia and catfish. Due to the proximity and unique conservation value of Lake Malawi, the Government are taking all measures possible to avoid damaging introductions of exotic species. It was therefore necessary to devise small-holder farming methods making use of locally available species. The first trials were performed with

The tourist brochures bill Malawi as 'the warm heart of Africa,' and for once the hype is true. Malawi's scenery is gorgeous and varied and Malawians tend to be extremely friendly toward travellers. It's a real nature-lover's destination: lots of national parks and game reserves, mountain hiking and plateau trekking and the massive Lake Malawi, great for diving, boating or lazing about. The country's reliable transport and compact size make getting about a snap. A broad range of accommodation and activities makes it possible to have a great time whether you're pinching pennies or blowing the bank. Full country name:Republic of Malawi

PovertyNet in other languages Culture and Poverty: Projects at the World Bank A Comparative Analysis of Social Funds and their relationship to Culture, Collective Action and Participation in Zambia, Nicaragua, Malawi and Jamaica Summary: Social Funds have become a major source of Bank assisted infusions of money for community supported projects. Unlike, traditional line-ministry led projects they rely substantially on communities for implementation and management. They, thus, are supposed to represent an improvement over more traditional development projects. However, very little research has currently been done focussing on the relationship between social fund mechanisms and socio-cultural structures. This research project will examine several questions related to the relationship between social funds and community participation, by comparing four countries with extremely diverse cultures that also have cultural diversity within them. The project will use qualitative and quantitative data to examine four questions:
  • How does cultural diversity affect social capital and community participation in accessing funds?
