Country Flag ... Travel Warning History Aboriginal Malays (Orang Asli) began moving down the Malay peninsula from south-western China about 10,000 years ago. The peninsula came under the rule of the Cambodian-based Funan, the Sumatran-based Srivijaya and the Java-based Majapahit empires, before the Chinese arrived in Melaka in 1405. Islam arrived in Melaka at about the same time and spread rapidly. Melaka's wealth soon attracted European powers, and the Portuguese took control in 1511, followed by the Dutch in 1641. The British established a thriving port in Penang in 1786 and took over Melaka in 1795. The British colonised the interior of the peninsula when tin was discovered. East Malaysia came into British hands via the adventurer James Brooke (who was made Rajah of Sarawak in 1841 after suppressing a revolt against the Sultan of Brunei) and the North Borneo Company (which administered Sabah from 1882). Britain took formal control of both Sabah and Sarawak after WW II. The indigenous labour supply was insufficient for the needs of the developing rubber and tin industries, so the British brought large numbers of Indians into the country, altering the peninsula's racial mix.

Langkawi was said to have been used as a hideout by pirates in the days of yore and with so many uninhabited islets located so close to one another, it is easy to imagine how this was possible. Pirates could move from islet to islet without being detected, and once on land, the lush tropical jungles would no doubt protect them from prying eyes and the long arm of the law.
In a sense, Langkawi seems to have experienced a complete reversal in its fortunes - it is today an extremely popular holiday retreat amongst wealthy tourists. This is very evident in the fact that the newest area being developed, Datai Bay, or Teluk Datai to locals, and Tanjung Rhu, caters to every comfort that the rich and affluent could wish for in a holiday - luxury amidst nature. Visitors to Langkawi may be caught off-guard by its rusticity and slow pace of life. Most of its inhabitants still retain their traditional ways of living - going to sea and reaping their hard-earned harvest from the ground. At present, it is not as well developed as Penang, another popular tourist destination in the northern region of Malaysia, although it is larger. In fact, Langkawi is almost as big as Singapore, Malaysia's neighbour down south.

Early Malay empires absorbed Indian influences, such as Hindu epics and the Sanskrit language. The kingdom of Malacca developed as an Islamic state, or sultanate, from the 15th century onwards. New cultural influences from Europe and China mixed with Hindu and Islamic traditions later in history. A collective but distinctively Malay cultural pattern has emerged from this blend. It is reflected in literature, music, dance, and art forms.
Hindu, Islamic and Indonesian forms influenced music in Malaysia. For example, wayang kulit (shadow-puppet theater), was introduced from Java in the 13th century, and today is most commonly found in the state of Kelantan. Malaysian musical instruments include distinctive drums (gendang); gongs and other percussion instruments made from native materials such as bamboo (kertuk and pertuang) and coconut shells (raurau); and a variety of wind instruments, including flutes. Music bands (nobat) and orchestras (gamelan) play these instruments at special occasions. Chinese musical forms, including Chinese opera, were more recently introduced into Malaysia.

Having had a very nice night's sleep on the overnight train from Chumporn, we arrive very fresh at Sungai Kolok for the day's trials and tribulations that would undoubtedly occur.
After 3 days diving at Watercolours, we end up having a chat with Mike and his German partner Anke and they offer us work... BUT... One of us needed to become an Instructor. After careful consideration (no straws required) we decide it should be Tracy, who would do her IDC/IE with a friend of Mike's at Dive Asia in the Tioman Islands a bit further down the coast. The course was to start in a few days! So armed with a borrowed instructor manual we leave Perhentian, taxi it back to Kota Bahru, then bus to Mersing and boat to Tioman and check into our accommodation on Salang Beach before Tracy goes straight into the classroom to swat up, ready to become an instructor.
Fourteen hectic days later, Tracy was a fully fledged Open Water Scuba Instructor and Terry (despite a chronic ear infection) had had a nice two week holiday with the occasional bit of Divemastering for Roger Ng, the owner of Dive Asia. We travel overnight back to Kuala Besut then on to Perhentian having been on the go for about 30 hours and manage to make it back to Watercolours for the first dive of the day and put straight back to work!

PEOPLE AND CULTURE
Malaysia has a combined population of over 18 million people. Because of its central location, between the Indian Ocean and the South China Sea, Malaysia has traditionally been a meeting point for traders and travelers from both the East and West. As a result, Malaysia has a multicultural and multiracial population consisting of Malays, Chinese, Indians and numerous indigenous peoples. Although Malay is the official language, English is widely spoken, especially in business, and the English language is a compulsory subject in all schools. With such a varying ethnic composition, it is no surprise that a great diversity of religions is prevalent throughout Malaysia. Although the official religion is Islam, freedom of worship is practiced. As a result, it is a common to see temples, mosques and churches within the same area. Ethnic Groups: 59% Malay and other indigenous, 32% Chinese and 9% Indian.

1. GENERAL INFORMATION
Malaysia is located in the heart of Southeast Asia, slightly north of the Equator. Consisting of 127,000 sq. miles (330,200 sq. km), Malaysia is divided into two main regions: Peninsular Malaysia, which lies just south of Thailand, and East Malaysia, which can be found north of Indonesia on the island of Borneo. These two regions are divided into thirteen states and federal territories. Although East Malaysia occupies the larger portion of Malaysia's total area, it is primarily comprised of undeveloped land and jungles. Approximately 80% of the nation's total population occupies the main peninsula. The terrain is certain to remain etched in the memories of all visitors for life. It is extremely diverse and consists of some of the world's finest coral reefs, vast stretches of white sandy beaches, green hills, towering mountains, limestone formations, networks of white-water rivers perfect for rafting, lakes and vast expanses of jungle and tropical rain forest. The territories that comprise of Malaysia were British protectorates in the 1920s. Malaysian nationalism reached its peak during the 1930s and again in the Post-World War II Era, culminating in the formation of the Federation of Malaya in 1957, which became Malaysia in 1963.

They are largely longhouse dwellers and live along the Rejang and Baram rivers. The Bidayuh (107,000) are concentrated on Sarawak's Skrang River. The Orang Asli (80,000) live in small scattered groups in Peninsular Malaysia. Traditionally nomadic agriculturalists, many have been absorbed into modern Malaysia. Malaysian music is heavily influenced by Chinese and Islamic forms. The music is based largely around the gendang (drum), but includes percussion instruments (some made of shells), flutes, trumpets and gongs. The country has a strong tradition of dance and dance dramas, some of Thai, Indian and Portuguese origin. Other artistic forms include wayang kulit (shadow-puppets), silat (a stylised martial art) and crafts such as batik, weaving and silver and brasswork.
Malay Food
It's not easy to find authentic Malay food in Malaysian restaurants, though you can take your pick of Chinese, Nyonya (a local variation on Chinese and Malay food - Chinese ingredients, local spices), Indian, Indonesian or (sometimes) Western cuisines. Satays (meat kebabs in spicy peanut sauce) are a Malaysian creation and they're found everywhere. Other dishes include fried soybean curd in peanut sauce, sour tamarind fish curry, fiery curry prawns and spiced curried meat in coconut marinade. Muslim Indian dishes have developed a distinctly Malaysian style. The variety of wonderful tropical fruits and fruit juices available is huge, and strange sweet concoctions include

Malacca Information
During its days as a more than thriving port, Malacca was truly cosmopolitan, considered the place to be if one was pursuing wealth, culture and knowledge. Bahasa Melayu, the local language of this region, was the lingua franca, used by all, and many of the traders and then the colonists stayed on and married local women, giving birth to two unique cultures in Malaysia, the Malaysian-Portuguese and the Babas and Nyonyas. Of the two hybrid cultures, the Baba and Nyonyas, also known as the Peranakan culture, is more prominent. The Chinese left their homeland in droves, some to escape the Manchu rule to begin a new life elsewhere while others were lured by the prospects of earning a better living, right from the 16th century up to the 20th. The Portuguese heritage, though no less interesting, appears to play second fiddle to the more dominant Peranakan culture as the Portuguese community has dwindled greatly over the years. Nevertheless, the age-old traditions are still an integral part of the people of Portuguese descent with special emphasis on religious festivals.
