Overview over the Malaysian regions
Geography of Malaysia
Malaysia is certainly a land that will not be easily forgotten by those who visit. It is extremely diverse, consisting of coral reefs, vast stretches of white sandy beaches, towering mountains, green hills, and formations of limestone, which defy gravity. Visitors will be left in awe of the color and contrasts and multi-faceted charm which Malaysia offers. It is divided into two main regions: Peninsular Malaysia and Eastern Malaysia . The peninsular region is the long finger of land extending down from Asia, as if pointing toward Indonesia and Australia . It accounts for about 40% of the country's area. The eastern region lies on the northern segment of Borneo
Cameron Highlands, Malaysia Malaysia is divided into thirteen federal territories, or states. Eastern Malaysia, which comprises the states of Sabah and Sarawak , is primarily underdeveloped jungle in respect to it's peninsular counterpart.

Geography
Malaysia comprises Peninsular Malaysia and two states of Sabah and Sarawak and the Federal Territory of Labuan on the island of Borneo. Together they cover a total land area of about 336,700 sq km, with Peninsular Malaysia covering 134,680 sq km. Sabah, Sarawak and Labuan take up 202,030 sq km. Malaysia has an interesting topography. The highest mountain in Peninsular Malaysia, the Gunung Tahan (Mount Tahan), rises 2,190 metres above the central spine of the Titiwangsa mountain range. Over in Sabah and Sarawak, the Gunung Kinabalu (Mount Kinabalu) towers 4,095 metres from the Crocker mountain range in Sabah. It is one of the highest mountains in South East Asia. In Peninsular Malaysia, a mountainous spine known as the Main Range or Banjaran Titiwangsa runs from the Thai border southwards to Negeri Sembilan, effectively separating the eastern part of the Peninsula from the western. A considerable part of the interior of Kelantan, Terengganu and Pahang is also mountainous and contains the highest peak in the Peninsula, Gunung Tahan (2187 m). As a result of the configuration of the country and of the heavy rainfall, there are many rivers which, until just over one hundred years ago, formed the main arteries for trade and travel and whose historical importance is underlined by the fact that nearly all of the states of the Peninsula take their names from the principal river in each. The longest of these rivers is the Sungai Pahang (475 km), followed by the Sungai Perak (400 km).

It is divided into two geographical sections: Peninsular Malaysia and East Malaysia (provinces of Sabah and Sarawak in North Borneo). The two parts of the country are lying about 650 km (404 mi) apart, separated by the South China Sea. Peninsular Malaysia neighbors Thailand and Singapore. Sabah and Sarawak border Kalimantan (the Indonesian part of Borneo) and Sarawak surrounds a tiny enclave of Brunei. The Andaman Sea is to the west of the Malaysian Peninsula. The East Coast of the peninsula, Sabah and Sarawak are all washed by the South China Sea. Malaysia measures a total of 330,200 sq. km (127,500 sq mi).
Peninsular Malaysia represents 40% of the country's area. A mountainous spine known as the Main Range or Banjaran Titiwangsa runs from the Thai border southwards along the backbone of the peninsula. It effectively separates a narrow eastern coastline from a wide, fertile plain of the west coast. Numerous rivers of the Peninsula are a result of the local topography and heavy tropical rainfall. Being the main trade and transport arteries of the past, now this network of white-water rivers is perfect for rafting. The Sungai Pahang River is the longest on the Peninsula (475 km; 295 mi), followed by the Sungai Perak (400 km; 248 mi).

MALAYSIAN GEOGRAPHY by Eric Desautels Professor Kong Fah Lee, John Abbott College (Winter 2000)
Like other countries in Southeast Asia (Japan and Indonesia in particular), Malaysia has a relatively complex geography comprising many islands and political boundaries . It is divided into two major parts, being East Malaysia, which shares the northern part of the island of Borneo with the small state of Brunei, and West Malaysia, which lies south of Thailand on the Malay Peninsula. The South China Sea separates these two parts. Malaysia's terrain is characterised by coastal plains that rise to become hills and then mountains. Most of Malaysia's basic land transportation system (road and rail) was established while Malaysia was under control of the British Empire. Malaysia is a country of over 20 million people who speak Bahasa Malaysian (the official language), Chinese, Tamil and English. The population is 53% Sunni Muslim, 17% Buddhist other religious groups include Christians, Hindus and Taoists. Malaysia is an emerging economy that, along with countries like Japan and Indonesia, has turned Southeast Asia into an economic hot spot. Having always been an important producer of rubber, tin and palm oil, its modernised manufacturing sector has made Malaysia the world's largest manufacturer of semiconductors. In recent years, the annual per capita income has grown beyond five thousand dollars US, which "may not seem huge to (Westerners), but $5,000 goes a lot further in Malaysia than in other places"
