INTRODUCTION
Background: Malaysia was created in 1963 through the merging of Malaya (independent in 1957) and the former British Singapore, both of which formed West Malaysia, and Sabah and Sarawak in north Borneo, which composed East Malaysia. The first three years of independence were marred by hostilities with Indonesia. Singapore seceded from the union in 1965.

Government
Malaysia is a federal constitutional monarchy with parliamentary democracy. The sovereign (the Yang di-Pertuan Agong) is elected every five years by and from the nine hereditary rulers of Perlis, Kedah, Perak, Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang, Selangor, Negeri Sembilan, and Johor. The prime minister must be a member and have the confidence of the house of representatives (Dewan Ra'ayat). The cabinet is chosen by the prime minister with the consent of the sovereign. The parliament has two chambers. The house consists of 192 members, all elected by popular vote in single-member districts. The house sits for a maximum of five years but may be dissolved by the sovereign. The senate (Dewan Negara) consists of 69 members chosen for six-year terms; each state legislature elects two and the sovereign appoints the remaining 43. There is a high court for each half of Malaysia and a supreme court. Sections in this article:

News Archives Malaysia Government to Beef Up Security By Steven Schwankert The Malaysian government is taking drastic measures to combat an increasing series of hacking incidents involving the Web sites of its agencies and ministries. The measures include adding more information and communications technology (ICT)-skilled staff to better manage Web sites, and ensuring that all security modules and features of software programs used are optimized. The Malaysian Administration Modernization and Management Planning Unit ( Mampu )'s deputy director-general, Datuk Anwar Maarof, said the unit will be collaborating with universities to have the related civil servants to undergo training. "It is crucial for people running the Web sites to be continuously updated on Internet security measures. They ought to be alert of potential security threats and respond quickly to avoid damages that could disrupt operations," said Maarof. "We are looking at the combination of both easy access and tight security providing public users the comfort of getting information."
