A brief history... T he National Press Club (NPC) was born on June 6, 1948 when a group of journalists met at an inaugural meeting at the Hotel Majestic which is now the National Art Gallery. But the idea to have a club for journalists actually took shape during a chat among some journalists at the Seng Nam Bar and Restaurant - dubbed the Vatican by regulars - as the old market square (near the present Central Market). "It was the beginning of the Emergency and reporters, press photographers and foreign correspondents who has encountered difficulty in covering the events felt that they should form a body to liaise with the authorities," founder member Mr. Tara Singh said in an interview with the Malay Mail in 1988. The Club was then called the Press Club of Malaysia and its first president was Mr. A.S. Rajah of the Malaya Tribune. Lifting through the pages of an old ledger kept by the secretaries of the club from its inaugural meeting till last entry on June 29, 1960 (yes, we still have this little history book), it was clear that getting a clubhouse was a matter that was pursued vigorously by the various executive committees. Various options were considered, including asking the government for a piece of land, renting space at the Loke Yew Building, the British Council and building and sharing premises with the Selangor Recreation Club.

A new page... A new page unfolded on July 4, 1992. It was the day of ambition when an " interest group " assumed responsibility of the National Press Club that was in tatters. P resident-elect P. C. Shivadas and his lieutenants forecast a great leap forward despite the odds. An ebullient and relentless machinery powered its way through a ' minefield ' to transform the de-registered club that was despised, scoffed at and ridiculed. The pride of the profession was at stake, says treasurer K.H.Lim " and we were all committed to providing a decent place where newsmen can call their own ." The new office bearers were elected on May, 1993 and the National Press Club was re-launched on July 16. The new executive committee focused its attention on the refurbishment of its premises. It was sheer journalistic dynamism. The 'ideas bank' to propel the club to brilliant heights and restore glory to the profession was loaded with fresh and creative thoughts. D uring the refurbishment, the executive committee met often at

Home Travel Agents Destinations Hotels ... Malaysia Malaysia was first mentioned in Chinese and Sanskrit records of the 7th and 8th centuries. In subsequent centuries the area was under the influence and loose control of various Thai and Indonesian empires, including the great Sumatra-based civilisation of Sri Vijaya. The city of Malacca, founded by a Sumatran prince at the beginning of the 15th century, became the center of an Islamic empire and was to remain the primary trading post between India and China for more than 300 years. In 1511, the control of Malacca went to the spice-trading Portuguese. In 1641, the Dutch defeated the Portuguese and ruled for 154 years. They used imported Dutch stone to construct distinctive pink buildings, many of which still stand. The British established a thriving port in Penang in 1786 and took over Malacca in 1795. The British, discovered tin, and moved inland. Kuala Lumpur, was founded at the confluence of the Klang and Gombak rivers in 1864. The British began building colonial-style structures and made it the capital of the Protected Malay States. Malay nationalism and desire for self-rule was felt around the 1930s. A call for independence was made but the move was halted by the Second World War. Later, the movement resumed and independence was declared on the 31st of August, 1957.

History:
In the same year, communist guerrillas - the bulk of whom were ethnic Chinese - launched an armed struggle aimed at establishing an independent socialist state. 'The Emergency', as the colonial authorities dubbed it, lasted formally until 1960. However, the serious fighting was over by the mid-1950s and in 1957, Britain proceeded with its plan to grant independence to the Federation of Malaya.
In 1963 the Federation of Malaya merged with Singapore and the former British colonies of Sarawak and Sabah (North Borneo) to form Malaysia. Singapore seceded to become an independent state in its own right in 1965, leaving Malaysia in its present form. Tunku Abdul Rahman, who had taken over as premier of the federation in 1957, remained as Prime Minister of the newly-expanded republic. He remained in office until 1970, when he was replaced by Tunku Abdul Razak. The dominant political organisation was the United Malay National Organisation (UMNO) which allied itself with several smaller formations to create the Barisan Nasional (NF

http://members.tripod.com/~alpha_msm/history.html
Brief History of MSM Mind Science Association of Malaysia (MSM) had its humble beginnings in Ipoh City, Malaysia when eight people got together to learn more about the Mind. They had the priviledge of the practical knowledge and experience of Dr. Clement Fernandez who was an ardent believer on the powers of the Mind. Prior to that, he had given talks of Mind Power. His was an amalgamation of Eastern practices and Western Scientific research in the filed of Metaphysics. The first structured course for these eight interested pioneers was conducted in YMCA Ipoh from November 14 to 16, 1986. This group then called themselves the Ipoh Alpha Circle and decided to meet occasionally to practice mental relaxation and discuss topics related to the mind. Gradually more people were attracted and there were request for course from people in various parts of the country. Once a course was successfully completed at a city or town, the graduates there continued to meet regularly to practice Mind Science. Each center was called a circle with its own local chairperson. We have centres in Kualal Lumpur, Ipoh, Penang, Johor Bahru, Melaka, Kuantan, and Kota Kinabalu. Members are people from all walks of life, including many professionals with a keen interest in the power of the mind. Fellowship was growing and then came a requirement to formally register the body. A pro-tem committee was set up in 1990 chaired by Dr. Clement Fernandez and a draft constitution was drawn up. The Mind Science Association of Malaysia (MSM) was formally approved as a registered society. MSM was formally launched on September 1992 by then the Minster of National Unity and Social Development.

56. Malaysia: A History In The Hands Of Change
malaysia's history is littered with outside influences such as Portugal, Spain,England and Japan, so how have they maintained their cultural heritage?
http://la.essortment.com/malaysiahistory_rwne.htm
Malaysia: a history in the hands of change
The Portuguese claimed the area that is Malaysi today as early as 1510. Malaysia held an important standing in Portugal's wealth in the East for about two hundred years, until 1700. In 1709, Spain annexed Portugal and claimed Malaysia as its own colony. In a fierce disagreement with England and Holland over Malaysian territory and trade, Spain closed all Malaysian ports to any ships not bearing a Spanish flag. However, this Spanish colony was eventually annexed by England and would remain England's for the next two hundred forty years. After uprisings in such colonies as Singapore and India in the 1800's, Malaysia began to consider its own independence. In 1918, however, Malaysia signed a revolution treaty with England, stating that they would not raise a resistance to England's soreignty in East Asia. Malaysia showed its loyalty by contributing large amounts of money to the Royal Air Forces during World War I. bodyOffer(22244) When Japan began its invasion of East Asia's mainland in 1940, Malaysia, unable to receive aid from its mother country, fell beneath the invasion in the spring of 1941. And Japan controlled Malaysia for the next three and one-half years. After the collapse of Japan in 1945, England officially
