with Crown Tours Though performances of traditional music and dance are not everyday events, there is a contemporary Divehi culture which is strong and adaptive, despite foreign influences which range from Hindi movies and Oriental martial arts to Michael Jackson and Muslim fundamentalism. Western fashions, pop music and videos are visible in the capital, but on public occasions, like the beginning and end of Ramadan, the celebrations always have a distinctly Maldivian touch. There are three daily newspapers and several magazines in the unique national language, rock bands who sing Divehi lyrics, and multi-storey buildings which echo the architecture of Maldivian island houses. A bodu beru means a big drum, and gives its name to the best known form of traditional music and dance. It's what tourist resorts put on for a local culture night, and it can be quite sophisticated and compelling. Dancers begin with a slow, nonchalant swaying and swinging of the arms, and become more animated as the tempo increases, finishing in a rhythmic frenzy. There are four to six drummers in an ensemble, and the sound has strong African influences. Contemporary local rock bands often perform at resorts where they do credible covers of the usual old favourites. Performing for a local audience they may incorporate elements of bodu beru in their music, with lots of percussion and extended drum solos. Cassettes from local bands are sold in Malé music shops.

Friendly and hospitable Sunni Muslim Population of 310,000 Tourists should dress modestly When you leave the Maldives, one of your lasting memories will be the people of this tropical paradise. From the moment you arrive you will be bombarded with smiles and courteous "goodmornings", and nothing will be too much trouble for your hosts. Maldivians, by nature are very curious, probably due to there isolation from the rest of the world, and your first impression may be that they are a timid race. Back on their own island, the Maldivian will enjoy what looks like a truly carefree lifestyle, where the emphasis is placed on living in harmony with nature. They call themselves "Dhivehin", their country "Dhivehi Rajji", and speak "Dhivehi". The Maldivian language is written from right to left and is known as "Thaana".

No less than 1192 islands, the like of which you will probably never have seen, make up this Indian Ocean paradise. Around 100 of the islands have been reserved for tourism, a number strictly controlled by the countries Muslim government to try to keep to a minimum any outside influence on the local communities.
None of the resorts available will take any more than an hour to stroll around at a leisurely pace, with many able to be discovered in under fifteen minutes. That you see is the beauty of the Maldives. A 'Robinson Crusoe' existence carefully hidden away from today's hectic world.

Legend has it that a prince and his wife, the daughter of the King of today’s Sri Lanka, stopped at Raa Atoll during a voyage and were invited to stay as rulers of the country. Later, King Koimala and his wife settled in Malé with the permission of the Giraavaru tribe, the aboriginal tribe of Kaafu atoll. Nowadays Giraavaru people are still easily recognizable through their clothes and hairstyle, but only a few hundred of them are left and were resettled in Malé in 1978. Their island, Giraavaru has been transformed into a tourist resort. Aryans from India and Sri Lanka are believed to have settled in the Maldives from 1500 BC onwards - according to latest archaeological findings. “Elu”, an archaic form of Sinhala (spoken in Sri Lanka) shows great similarities to Dhivehi. As a favorite stop-over on the busy trade routes, the Maldives have had many visitors and influences, trading with Arabia, China and India with coconut, dried fish and above all the precious cowry shell, a small white shell found on the beach, used as currency in countries near the Indian Ocean. These shells were found as far away as Norway or West Africa showing the extent of the trade relations of the Maldives. Conversion to Islam
Mohamed Ibn Batuta, a Moroccan traveler who visited the Maldives in the 14th century recorded an interesting legend on how the country converted to Islam.

Shopping Maldives - Culture The Maldives has been a melting pot of different cultures as people from different parts of the world came here and settled down. Origin of the Maldivians is lost in antiquity, but history reveals that the islands have been populated for over 3,000 years ago. Early settlers were travelers on the Silk Route and from the Indus Valley Civilization. Inherently warm, friendly and hospitable by nature, it is easy to feel comfortable and relaxed with a Maldivian.
Some of the local music and dance for instance resemble African influences, with hand beating of drums and songs in a language that is not known to any but certainly represents that of East African countries.
As one would expect there is a great South Asian influence in some of the music and dancing and especially in the traditional food of the Maldivians. However many of the South Asian customs especially with regard to women - for instance the Sub Continent’s tradition of secluding women from public view - are not tenets of life here.

No other religions are permitted, though ancient beliefs survive: for example, islanders fear jinnis - evil spirits which come from the sea, land and sky. These are blamed for everything that cannot be explained by religion or science. Fish and rice are the staple foods of Maldivians with meat and chicken eaten only on special occasions. National dishes include fried fish, fish curry and fish soup. Arecanut (an oval nut chewed with betel leaf, cloves and lime) is the equivalent of an after-dinner mint. Maldives: research perspectives
Despite the fact that the Maldives were mentioned as far back as before the Christian era, they still remain a terra incognita for European scholars. Even in the last 150 years, although a few scientific expeditions have investigated the islands, the Maldives have mostly been the object of study of enthusiastic individual scholars. By Leonard Kulikov The leading (and, in fact, the only) authority on almost all aspects of Maldivian history and culture from the end of nineteenth century until his death in 1937 was H.C.P. Bell, the Archaeological Commissioner of Ceylon, who published three monographs and a number of articles on the Maldives (for his bibliography see H.C.P. Bell: Archaeologist of Ceylon and the Maldives, by B.N. Bell and H.M. Bell, Archetype Publications, 1993).
The dearth of scientific resources is regrettable, since the Maldives have a rich history and a very idiosyncratic culture presenting genuine virgin soil to a number of groups of scientists: linguists, historians, anthropologists, and, as the recent excavations have demonstrated, archaeologists. Investigations on the Maldives were stepped up a little in the seventies but even nowadays the number of scholars engaged in these researches can almost be counted on the fingers of one hand. Unpublished manuscripts
No scientific grammar of Maldivian has so far been published in any European language. Only a few conversational guides and short dictionaries for tourists have been issued. A comprehensive report of a linguistic expedition to the Maldives compiled by Sri Lankans (S. Wijesundera, G.D. Wijayawardhana, J.B. Disanayaka) and Maldivians (H.A. Maniku, M. Luthfie) is still unpublished. This is an almost unique situation since this is also the only official language of an independent state, but it should change in the very near future: S. Gippert-Fritz (Germany) and B. Cain (USA) are going to publish grammatical descriptions; and C.H.B. Reynolds (London) has prepared a Maldivian-English dictionary still remains unpublished.

http://www.iias.nl/iiasn/iiasn5/insouasi/maloney.html
Where Did the Maldives People Come From?
The Maldives consist of over 1000 small coral islands stretching over 764 km of the Indian Ocean west of Sri Lanka. The country is populated by roughly 180,000 people who call themselves Devehi(s) ('islanders'), and their language is Divehi, which is also the ethnographic term. These islands are grouped mostly into ring-like coral atols, and since atol is a Devehi word it should be spelled correctly with one l. Seafaring explorers of past centuries fancied that the shape of this chain of atols resembled a garland, and indeed on a map it does look like this. So the Archipelago came by the name mala div (garland island, a common word in Indian languages), and the name should properly be spelled Maladiv, not Maldive. By Clarence Maloney The Maldives people are a clear ethnic category, having a unique language derived from Sinhala but grafted on to an earlier Tamil base, and they have a homogeneous cultural tradition. In early medieval times they followed the Sri Lanka type of Buddhism, but in 1153 were converted to Islam by order of their ruler. There is another island located to the north of Maldives territory that belongs culturally to the Maldives, Minicoy (properly, Maliku), which because of events during the colonial period is now held by India as part of its Laksh- advip Island group. Most of the Maldives islands are tiny, less than a mile long, but Minicoy is the largest island populated by Divehi people. The Indian government does not allow foreigners to visit this island.

With their natural beauty, the panorama of the Maldives' coral atolls is, in one word, breathtaking. At Kanuhura Resort & Spa, a unique Maldivian architectural concept was applied in constructing the 100 luxury villas, using natural materials such as wood and cadjan (thatch) to create a natural and minimalist affair which harmonizes with the tropical island setting, thanks to an enlightened policy of ecotourism the resort has embraced. Traditional outdoor furniture such as 'joli" and "holhuashi" are used to provide a local flavour and taste for innovation. Related Links Facilities Virtual Tour Environmental Protection
