The UNDP Pearl Culture Project, funded by the Japan Human Resource Development Fund and executed by the Ministry of Fisheries Agriculture and Marine Resources, is a unique undertaking. For, there was no pre-existing knowledge of Maldivian pearl oysters or pearl culture before this time, all of which was learnt during the programme.
The main aim of the project is to promote pearl culture to widen the economic base of the country. A pearl industry is envisaged which will create employment, increase the provision of secure livelihoods for the outer atolls and help to adress the econimic gap betwween the atolls and the capital Male’. A marine research team from the Maldives has been trained in all aspects of the man-induced collection and growing process - from spats (baby oysters), to mother-of-pearl-oysters, and finally to full-grown pearls and also spat collection, rearing and harvesting. This has provided much needed opportunity for the local population, particularly for the 3 women employed, and for which there was much competition.

The Maldives ECD project uses a multimedia approach to reach households in this archipelago of 1,200 tiny islands scattered over 90,000 sq. km of ocean. An important objective is to create a media culture in which children are told they are valued, regularly see themselves portrayed in the media, are encouraged to express themselves and have these expressions valued from infancy. In addition to promoting the inclusion of children with disabilities in all their materials, the Maldives project is focusing on another often unacknowledged but highly important group: adolescents. The project provides older siblings with ways to help stimulate the development of their younger brothers and sisters while watching over them. The Maldives project aims to raise the status of ECD so that it becomes a key indicator for assessing progress and development at the island, atoll and national levels. Previous Next

Social Structure
Maldives was a caste society well into the 1920s. Modernization efforts however, have helped make Maldives more homogeneous in the early 1990s. Traditionally, a significant gap has existed between the elite living on Male and the remainder of the population inhabiting the outer islandsthose atolls distant from Male. President Gayoom's development philosophy has centered on decreasing this gap by raising the standard of living among the 75 percent of Maldivians who live in the outer atolls as well as making Maldives more self-sufficient. Fortunately, social tensions that might have affected these two distinct societies were lessened by the isolation of the outer islands. The geographical advantage of having many islands, for example, has enabled Maldives to limit the impact of tourism to special resorts. Male, the traditional seat of the sultans and of the nobility, remains an elite society wielding political and economic power. Members of the several traditionally privileged ruling families; government, business, and religious leaders; professionals; and scholars are found there. Male differs from other island communities also because as many as 40 percent of its residents are migrants.

Like the unique geographical formation, the cultural events and ceremonials are unique according to the event that is celebrated or performed. Naming a newborn child, Bodumaloodhu (a prayer accompanied with festive meal), Eid festival and circumcision of male child are few events that take place where the taste of rich cultural 'cocktail' can be experienced. Bodu beru (big drum) performanceis the best-known form of performance of traditional music and dance where females and males participate. Bandiyaa (a dance performed by woman), Thaara (dance performed by male) is among the top traditional music and dances practiced in the Maldive Islands.

Sri Lankans are extremely friendly and hospitality plays a major role in their lifestyle. Religion and social protocol is deeply embedded in the culture and Sri Lanka with its great ethnic diversity, has a multitude of colourful festivals throughout the year. Lunar and Poya Days
Sri Lanka is primarily a Buddhist country and most of its festivals are based on the lunar calendar. Every full moon day, also known as 'Poya' is a holiday. The Buddha encouraged his disciples to undertake spiritual practices during the full moonday and Sri Lankan Buddhists spend these days in meditation and prayer. Each Poya day is related to an incident in the life of the Buddha or to a historic Buddhist event. January (Duruthu)
Duruthu Perahera is conducted on a full moon day in January at the Buddhist temple in Kelaniya. It commemorates the first visit of Lord Buddha to Sri Lanka.

Physiography
Maldives consists of approximately 1,200 coral islands grouped in a double chain of twenty-seven atolls. Composed of live coral reefs and sand bars, these atolls are situated atop a submarine ridge 960 kilometers long that rises abruptly from the depths of the Indian Ocean and runs from north to south. Only near the southern end of this natural coral barricade do two open passages permit safe ship navigation from one side of the Indian Ocean to the other through the territorial waters of Maldives. For administrative purposes the Maldives government organized these atolls into nineteen administrative divisions (see fig. 8 Government and Politics , this ch.). Most atolls consist of a large, ring-shaped coral reef supporting numerous small islands. Islands average only one to two square kilometers in area, and lie between one and 1.5 meters above mean sea level. The highest island is situated at three meters above sea level. Maldives has no hills or rivers. Although some larger atolls are approximately fifty kilometers long from north to south, and thirty kilometers wide from east to west, no individual island is longer than eight kilometers. Each atoll has approximately five to ten inhabited islands; the uninhabited islands of each atoll number approximately twenty to sixty. Several atolls, however, consist of one large, isolated island surrounded by a steep coral beach. The most notable example of this type of atoll is the large island of Fua Mulaku situated in the middle of the Equatorial Channel.
