GEOGRAPHY
The Maldives Republic is located 500km (300 miles) southwest of the southern tip of India and consists of about 1190 low-lying coral islands, of which only 200 are inhabited. Most of the inhabited islands are covered by lush tropical vegetation and palm trees, while the numerous uninhabited islands, some of which are mere sand spits or coral tips, are covered in shrubs. Each island is surrounded by a reef enclosing a shallow lagoon. Hundreds of these islands together with other coral growth form an atoll, surrounding a lagoon. All the islands are low-lying, none more than 2m (7ft) above sea level. The majority of the indigenous population do not mix with the tourist visitors, with the exception of those involved with tourism in the resorts and Malé. Area: 298 sq. km. (115 sq. mi.), over 1,900 islands; twice the size of Washington, DC.
Cities: CapitalMalé (pop. 70,000).
Terrain: Flat islands.
Climate: Hot and humid

Maldives Geography
The atolls of the Maldives form the central part of a great underwater mountain range stretching for over 2000 km from the Laccadives Islands, in the north, to the Chagos Islands, in the South. The islands are divided into 26 geographic atolls. Minicoy is the 27th atoll but it was linked to India in 1753 during the time of Sultan al Mukarram Mohamed Imadudeen III (1750 - 1757 AD). For convenience, these atolls are divided into 19 administrative groups and named according to the letters of the Maldivian alphabet. In the resort atolls, Felidhoo Atoll is now referred to as Vaavu, Ari Atoll as Alifu, Male Atoll as Kaafu, Faadhippolhu Atoll as Lhaviyani, North Maalhosmadulu Atoll as Raa, South Maalhosmadulu Atoll as Baa, North Nilandhoo Atoll as Faafu, South Nilandhoo Atoll as Dhaalu, Mulaku Atoll as Meemu, and Addoo Atoll as Seenu. Geography
The Maldives is situated in the South West of Sri Lanka, on the equator. The numerous coral reef islands, 1,190 in total, form an archipelago of 26 natural atolls ( groups of neighbouring coral islands). These 26 atolls are organised into 19 administrative atolls with the capital island of Male' established as an entity of its own forming the twentieth division. Seen from air, the atolls and the islands form breathtakingly beautiful patterns against the blue depths of the Indian Ocean. The Maldives - a group of stunning coral islands scattered across the Indian Ocean. The country stretches 823 km north to south and 130 km east to west. Out of the incredibly large number of islands only 200 islands are inhabited, with 88 islands adapted as exclusive resort islands. The sea forms over 99 percent of the Maldives. Only 0.331 percent, 298 km (115 square miles), of its 298 km (34, 750 square miles) is land.

And a mere 199 out of, at least 1,190, islands are inhabited. Seen from air, the atolls and islands form breathtakingly beautiful patterns against the blue depths of the Indian Ocean. The Maldivian atolls are a classic example of its kind. The Oxford English Dictionary says the word is "an adoption of the native name "atholhu" applied to the Maldive Islands , which are typical examples of this structure". The atolls rise from a common plateau, a long dead volcanic landmass, and are separated from each other by deep channels. A journey between them is often easy to navigate. The islands are formed from coral layers rising sharply from the plateau. Most of these islands are situated close to the atoll enclosure reef and vary in size from patches of coral or small sand banks, to real islands – some are still in the process of forming. Because they are based on coral, the islands are flat; the highest point very rarely rises over six feet above sea level. Fortunately, the atoll reefs protect the islands from the major elements. Years and years of the sea moving with shell particles have grounded them into

The Republic of the Maldives lies between just south of the equator and 8 degrees north, is made up of almost 1,200 islands, of which around 200 are inhabitted, with an additional 80+ set aside for tourism. The islands are grouped into 26 coral atolls stretching for 468 miles north to south and 7 3 miles west to east. Whilst some islands can be as small as an uninhabitted sandbar with a tiny patch of shrub, others can be a few miles across and reasonably well vegitated. In total, dry land makes up less than 4% of the total territory and there are no mountains, hills or rivers.
Each atoll in the archipelago is enclosed by a coral reef but also has a few deep, natural channels which are used as gateways for the locals and their boats. Likewise each island also has a protective coral reef which creates a shallow lagoon, or "villu". Most of the time the lagoons are a fantastic shade of blue, filled with coral and marine life which has attracted divers from every corner of the globe.

A string of “pearls” scattered over a carpet that is the deep blue Indian Ocean - the first glimpse you get of this fascinating atoll formation confirms two unique aspects of the Republic of Maldives: not only does it consist of the most beautiful tropical islands, but 99% of its 90.000 km² surface area is covered by the sea. 1,190 islands are spread over 26 atolls natural atolls, ring-like coral formations enclosing a lagoon, which gives the Maldives its unique appearance. They stretch for about 820 km from North to South, 130 km from East to West at the widest point and do not exceed a length of 4.5 miles or an altitude of 6 feet above sea level. No more than 200 islands are inhabited, another 87 islands are dedicated as tourist resorts and the rest are all uninhabited islands, some of which are used for drying fish or other agricultural activities. The capital Malé, the seat of government and the centre of trade, commerce, business, health and education, is located at the southern tip of the northern portion of Male’ atoll, a small island buzzing with the sounds and activities of about 75.000 people which is about one third of the population of the Maldives.

Years and years of the sea moving with shell particles have grounded them into grains of sand smaller than a little dot. Though there are no forests as such, the islands all support vegetation that can be quite lush. Coconut palms hold forte in the court of trees, thriving without help even on the smallest of islands.
