Geography and Climate
The Maldives is an archipelago of about 1190 islands. These islands are grouped into natural coral atolls. That is probably how an encyclopedia would describe us. Like any other ocean in the world, the Indian Ocean has its share of storms and waves. You might be tempted to ask, "So what is so special about that?" What is special is the Maldivian archipelago. Nature protects these islands so well from the rougher aspects of the greater ocean while withholding nothing in the magic of warm tropical sea! The magic lies in the reefs that make up the atolls. The outermost 'layer' of the coral atoll is a fringing reef. This layer, composed entirely of coral debris and living coral, presents a formidable barrier to oceanic waves. Even on the calmest of days, with hardly a noticeable ripple on the surface of the sea inside the reef-enclosed lagoons, waves continues to crash and thunder onto these reefs. As soon as one finds a natural break in the reef and gains entry within, paradise awaits you if you love windsurfing, snorkeling, diving or one of the many pastimes that sea-lovers enjoy.

Do you want to be on a tropical island paradise? The Maldives fits the bill perfectly. It is located in the balmy waters of the Indian Ocean. These lush islands lie about 500 Km from the Southern tips of both Sri Lanka and India. If you happen to be a sun lover, a surfer, a diver or someone who desires peace in its deepest meaning, the Maldives is where you have to be!
Introduction to Paradise, Maldives
The Maldives has always been a unique nation. Apart from a period of Portuguese domination in the Sixteenth century and carrying the status of a British Protectorate from 1887 to 1965, the archipelago has been an independent archipelago for at least twenty-five centuries. The Maldives is a member of the United Nations, the Commonwealth and the Non-Aligned Movement. The Maldives maintains a very cordial relationship with the international community and the Maldivians themselves take pride in their hospitability and friendliness!

    http://www.hellomaldives.com/maldives/geography/contents.htm
As we have said in the Maldives Introduction of this website "www.hellomaldives.com", the Maldivian archipelago is made up of about 1,190 small, tropical, palm and bush covered coral islands stretching across the Equator from 7 degree Latitude North. Together with the Lakshadweep formerly called "Laccadive Islands" to the North and the Chagos Islands to the South, forming part of a vast submarine mountain range, on the crest of which coral reefs have grown. Measuring 820 km North to South and 120 km East to West at its greatest width, the closest neighbors are India and Shrilanka. With a population of about 280,000 people, only about 205 islands are inhabited. And more than 90 islands are set aside exclusively for tourist resort development (Tourism Zone) One would expect the Indian Ocean, like any of the other oceans of the world to have its share of storms, waves and other phenomena related to large bodies of water. The Indian Ocean does fulfill this expectation till one begins to approach any of the coral atolls right in the middle of it. Indeed, the islands of Maldives are low lying and small. And these islands are rarely more than 2 meters (7 feet) above the sea level. Thus extremely vulnerable to surging tides and storms. You can cross most of the islands by a 10 minute walk, only a few are longer than 2 km. And the longest is 8 km (5 miles). Though our islands are protected by coral reefs with the help of storms, winds and waves; inevitably some are washed away. Thus, in 1812 and in 1955 devastating gales destroyed many northern islands. And in 1964, an island in Alifu (Ari) Atoll, known as "Hangyaameedhoo" was inundated by high waves. Further the capital, Male' was flooded by a severe storm in 1987.

Maldives is a chain of coral atolls formed upon minor elevations on the Chagos-Lacadive submarine plateau, which ascends from the deep Indian Ocean. Structure and types of atolls
Many of the low-lying islands such as those in the Maldives are created from reefal limestone and unconsolidated carbonate sediment. As suggested by Darwin, coral atolls are formed by the total disappearance of a volcanic mass beneath the sea and continued upward growth of coral reefs on this volcanic basement, resulting in the formation of a coral atoll or in local terms, atholhu. Most of the atolls have a number of channels or openings in the outer reef (kandu olhi) which provide access to the islands in the enclosed interior sea or lagoon of the atoll. Some of the atolls are fairly large such as Huvadhoo Atoll in the south, which is regarded as one of the largest true atoll formations in the world with about 250 islands and a lagoon area covering approximately 2,800 sq km. Some other atolls are very small with only a single island such as Kaashidhoo and Gaafaru in North Male Atoll. In addition there is the reeftop type, with no interior lagoon but an island covering most of the of the reef platform such as Fuahmulah. In the central part of the archipelago the atolls are formed into two chains a western and an eastern chain separated by a channel.

There are still ongoing debates about the formation of atolls. According to Charles Darwin's theory, when submerged volcanoes rise from the sea, a coral reef grew on its edge. When the volcanoes submerged, the coral reefs encircling a water-filled basin remained. Consequently, islands were formed on the reefs as the tides and currents brought dead coral onto sandbars. These were in turn colonised by plants.
