CULTURE-AFRICA: Crack Down on Witchcraft on the Soccer Pitch James Hall MBABANE, Mar 11 (IPS) - Lwazi Dlamini, sports writer for the Times of Swaziland, feels so-called witchcraft practised in African soccer to ensure good performance for a favoured side and bad luck for opponents is ''primarily psychological''. But he says it is effective, nonetheless. Soccer officials throughout Africa are becoming less tolerant toward the use of alleged magic on the soccer pitch. For this year's 'African Cup of Nations' competition in Mali, the high point on the continent's annual football playing calendar, and second in prestige only to the World Cup, officials banned traditional healers from associating with teams. Even traditional healers who provide therapeutic assistance with herbal potions and time-tested remedies were forbidden.

Water and Culture
by John Bidwell , Segou, Mali My village, Nampossela, is located near a stream. Between Nampossela and the stream, there is a sacred well. This well is believed to be the birthplace of the village, meaning that long, long ago someone decided to settle here after his cow stopped to drink at that spot. The well was the village's first source of water, but people no longer drink from it, or use it for washing clothes. The well is for ceremonial use only. It was the first to be repaired with cement and bricks (most wells are gapping eroded holes) and includes a cement hump where animals are sacrificed.

Drew University is pleased to offer a unique summer study program that allows a firsthand exploration of the culture, traditions, and arts of West Africa. Since 1984, several hundred students have benefitted from Drew in West Africa, taking courses in African studies, art, and art history. Students are introduced to the ways in which art reflects the social, economic, and cultural changes taking place in modern Africa. We invite you to join us for an extraordinary summer one that will leave you excited by Africa and touched by its customs and people. The Program
July 12 to August 5, 2003
Mali is an extraordinary country, extending from the savannah to the edge of the Sahara, with thousands of miles of extraordinary landscapes, ranging from the Dogon cliffs to the scenic Niger River Delta. Mali still contains many vestiges of the period when it was the center of great medieval empires.
The program begins in the capital city of Bamako with a general orientation and introduction to the art and culture of contemporary Mali and to the cultures of its many peoples, particularly the Bamana and the Dogon. The group then travels to interior regions, visiting villages where traditional life remains vigorous. Throughout, particular attention is given to local art and its relationship to the culture producing it. In addition, emphasis is placed on discussions with Malians.
