Bamako Culture Modern-day Mali with ( Bamako as a capital ) evolved out of a long, illustrious history of vast and culturally rich empires centred around the lush inland delta of the Niger River. At its peak, the medieval Mali empire was the one of the world's chief gold suppliers. Tombouctou, gateway to the Sahara Desert, was a renowned centre for trade, culture and Islamic learning. The fabled city was home to one of the largest libraries in the world. Mali is a landlocked country of 11 million people in the heart of West Africa. Traditionally the commercial centre of the region, Mali is bordered by the present-day countries of Mauritania and Senegal to the West; Guinea, Cote d'Ivoire, and Burkina-Faso to the South; Niger to the East; and Algeria across the northern expanses of the Sahara. Mali is nearly twice the size of Texas. The terrain is predominately savanna and sand-covered plains; 65 percent of the country is desert or semi-desert. The Niger River flows through the heart of the country, flooding annually and creating pasture land for livestock. The river forms a magnificent inland delta across an alluvial plain supporting unique and lush vegetation for six months of the year.

Agency in Africa: Understanding socio-cultural transformations in time and space Head: Dr M.E. de Bruijn Theme: Understanding large-scale transformation processes requires a focus on agency in Africa, an approach in which the local actors' understanding of their circumstances is crucial. Their perceptions, ideas, emotions and even fantasies are taken into consideration. The theme group aims to study the processes of meaning and signification in which agency transpires, in the decisions and choices that people make and the hopes and desires they express. The research concentrates on investigating how these processes have a bearing on all kinds of political, economic and social changes in their livelihoods, or to what extent they are affected by these changes. The approach is both empirical and reflexive. The theme group's research focuses on three fields of study: mobility; power, contestation and confrontation; and issues of knowledge and reflexivity.

http://www.ruf.rice.edu/~anth/arch/mali-interactive/aboutproject/
T According to tradition, Jenné-jeno ("ancient Jenné) is the early site of Jenné. The town moved to its present location sometime around a thousand years ago, although we aren't sure why the inhabitants moved, finally abandoning Jenné-jeno totally by 1400 A.D. The fact that Jenné and Jenné-jeno are so closely related historically and share many features allows us to look at Jenné for clues to help us understand how the early Jenné-jeno people lived. O As the earliest known urban settlement south of the Sahara, Jenne-jeno is one of the very few World Heritage archaeological sites recognized by UNESCO in sub-saharan Africa. Because it is an important site for our understanding of the development of civilization south of the Sahara, its slow destruction by erosion is a matter of grave concern. The World Monuments Fund has provided money to Malian archaeologists to rescue archaeological information in endangered sections of the site, and to fill in the gullies in order to stop further erosion. Malian and American members of the project team are working together toward this important goal. B ut in addition to the archaeology, the purpose of the Mali Interactive Project is to share information on another culture and way of life very different from our own in the United States.

Mali is a landlocked country situated in West Africa. It has land borders with Algeria in the north and northwest, Niger in the east and south, Burkina Fasso and Ivory Coast in the south, Guinea to the southwest, Senegal to the west and Mauritania to the west and northwest.
Two massifs dominate Mali, which is served by two rivers - the Niger and Senegal and their tributaries. The republic is divided into three natural zones; the Sudanese, an area of cultivation covering some 200,000 sq. km (77,220 sq. mi) in the south and in the Niger delta; the Sahelian and the Saharan. In the southwest are the mountains of the Futa Jallon, which rise 600-700 meters (1,970-2,300 ft) and are deeply notched by valleys. The second massif, in the circle formed by the Niger River, is virtually a plateau and rests on the sandstone base.
