    INTRODUCTION
Background: Great Britain formally acquired possession of Malta in 1814. The island staunchly supported the UK through both World Wars and remained in the Commonwealth when it became independent in 1964. A decade later Malta became a republic. Over the last 15 years, the island has become a major freight transshipment point, financial center, and tourist destination. It is an official candidate for EU membership.

    GEOGRAPHY
The Maltese Islands are situated in the Mediterranean sea, located geographically between Sicily and North Africa. The islands consist of three separate islands being :- Malta - (390 km²) Gozo - (65 km²) Comino - (2.5 km²) Malta has no rivers or mountains. A series of low hills with terraced fields on the slopes is a strong characteristic of the landscape fashioned by centuries of farming, The coastline of Malta is well indented with harbors, bays, creeks, sandy and rocky beaches and rocky coves.
    CLIMATE
Malta's climate, with sunshine nearly all year round, is ideal for any visitor to the island. It is warm and healthy, with no strong winds, fog, frost or snow. Rain falls for very short periods of time, even in the winter months.
