34. Rising From The Sea
Illustrated article by Robert Wernick for the Smithsonian on the huge prehistoric stone buildings on malta and Gozo.
http://www.science.plym.ac.uk/departments/geography/malta/wernick.htm
Rising from the sea, the mysterious handiwork of giants.
Robert Wernick This article first appeared in the Smithsonian, September, 1996
The Remains of the Knight's occupation, a tower built to watch for invaders Now the Maltese, much to their surprise and to that of the learned world, are beginning to realise that they played a major role at another turning point in history. This one took place several thousand years ago, long before there were historians in existence to record it. Only some battered physical traces remain to bear witness. The most imposing can be found on the island of Gozo, just north-west of the main island of Malta, in the huge stone remains of a building to which the local peasants long ago gave the name Ggantija, the Giant's Tower. Rising abruptly at the edge of a barren plateau, the tower's scarred and jagged rock walls seem immensely thick and immensely old. They are in fact immensely old, part of a cluster of buildings spread over a ten-mile radius that, according to the latest scientific calculations, are the oldest free-standing stone monuments on the face of the earth. Just short of 6,000 years old, they antedate anything we think of as an advanced civilisation. More than 30 similar structures have been found on Malta and Gozo, and others are surely buried under villages and city streets. At least fourthe Giant's Tower on Gozo, Hagar Qim (pronounced had-jar im), Tar-xien (tar-shen) and Mnajdra (ny-dra) on the main island of Maltaare of a size that would be considered impressive anywhere on earth. Some of the stones of which they are built weigh more than 20 tons.

The Maltese Islands enjoy a healthy climate, with mild winters and a hot summer season. Cold winds, snow, frost and fog are unknown. Rain falls between September and April. It seldom rains after April, and nearly never in summertime. The temperature averages 57.5 degrees Fahrenheit in winter (Nov-Apr) and 89.6 degrees Fahrenheit during the summer (May-Oct). The hottest period is from mid-July through mid-September although the islands seldom get too hot, as hot summer days and nights are regularly tempered by cool sea breezes. There are no mountains or rivers. The majority of fields are small and terraced, but despite lack of rain and other adverse terrain conditions, agriculture is well developed.
