    Issue No. 226 18 - 24 February 1999
MSE trading increases by 30% in January Trading activity at the Malta Stock Exchange commenced very strongly during 1999 with market turnover exceeding a value of Lm10.3m during the first month of the year, spread over 801 deals. This was almost 30 per cent higher than the turnover registered during the same period last year. The number of deals also increased by almost 27 per cent when compared to January 1998. This year-to-year upsurge in turnover was attributable mainly to higher levels business in the government stock market. Trading in government stocks accounted for almost 90 per cent of all turnover registered during January 1999 and was almost twice that recorded during the same month last year. At the same time, comparing year-to-year figures, trading in corporate bonds decreased considerably while business in the equity market resulted in a turnover of less than half that registered in January 1998. It is to be noted, however, that equity trading during January 1998 was dominated by large special deals in Middle Sea insurance shares which significantly altered the shareholding of the company.
  • Equities A total of 881,610 ordinary and preference shares were transacted during January 1999 giving rise to a turnover of almost Lm1.1m, spread over 410 deals. Trading in Maltacom plc shares sustained the high levels of trading achieved during 1998 and accounted for almost 50 per cent of the turnover value registered in the equity market throughout the month. At the same time, Bank of Valletta plc shares continued to be traded fairly briskly, as were those of Mid-Med Bank plc and also those of Lombard Bank plc market capitalisation of equities stood at almost Lm288m at the end of January 1999.

Malta Government Napoleon conquered Malta in 1798. The Maltese rebelled against him, and Malta came under British control at its own request . It was formally added on in 1814 and then became a big British base route to India. While Word War II was going on , frightful bombs destroyed many old buildings and treasures of art . For bravery the whole population was awarded the St. George Cross. Malta was granted self-rule in 1947, but the islanders wanted full freedom from the United Kingdom . In 1964, Malta became a independent country within the Commonwealth of Nations. When the constitution was amended in 1974 the island became a republic. A president took the place of the governor-general , who was the delegate of the British monarch, for head of state. A prime minister is always head of the government . The presidency is a big ceremonial office, but the government is headed by a prime minister, who is the leader of the majority party in the House of Representatives . The country's prime minister is the most powerful official. An assistant carries out operations. The members of the House are chosen for a five-year term. Home Land People Economy ... Other links
