LE MERIDIEN PHOENICIA STORY
Since the second World War broke out in 1940, the hotel was not officially opened but was taken over by the services and used by the R.A.F personnel during their days off. The left wing of the hotel by the Pegasus Brasserie was hit by bombs and was re-built soon after the war.
The hotel Phoenicia was officially opened in 1947 by Lady Margaret Strickland, His Grace Michael Gonzi, Archbishop of Malta Lord Francis Campell, then Sir Francis, Governor of Malta, to provide a cosmopolitan clientele with a standard of comfort and service equalling that of the highest grade hotels in any European capital.
The hotel also played important roles in historical events on the island. Official functions marking the independence celebrations in September 1964 were held mainly at the Phoenicia. As an important focus of Malta's social life, it became a local landmark and household name through out the islands.
In August 1966 Charles Forte (later Lord), acquired the Phoenicia Hotel and immediately initiated a major refurbishment. One of the many embellishments was the roofing of the internal courtyard, which is today the Palm Court Lounge. The Phoenicia was the first hotel in Malta to have a swimming pool. The loyalty and dedication of the staff further contributed to the Phoenicia's renown for service and efficiency.
From 1971 to date, most Ambassadors or High Commissioners from other countries stay at the Phoenicia, when presenting their credentials to the President of Malta. Various Ministers and top V.I.P.s on official business invited by the Government of Malta have stayed at the Hotel Phoenicia over the past years.

History of Malta
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Overview of Maltan History
Malta has been inhabited since around 5200 BC and a significant pre-historic civilisation existed on the islands prior to the arrival of the Phoenicians who named the main island Malat , meaning safe haven. The islands later came under the control of first Carthage 400 BC ) and then Rome , before being conquered by Arabs in AD, who would greatly influence local culture, notably in the Maltese language . In they were finally replaced by the Sicilian Normans , after which Malta became Christian again. In the islands were given to the Order of Knights of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem

Malta: History The island of Malta (ancient Melita) belonged successively to the Phoenicians, Greeks, Carthaginians, Romans, and Saracens. St. Paul was shipwrecked there ( a.d. 60). The Normans of Sicily occupied it c.1090. In 1530 the Hapsburg Charles V granted Malta to the Knights Hospitalers (therefore sometimes known as the Knights of Malta). Notwithstanding a determined siege by the Turks in 1565, the knights held it until 1798, when it was surrendered to Napoleon. The British ousted the French in 1800, and for most of the 19th century Malta was ruled by a military governor. The opening of the Suez Canal (1869) increased its strategic value. During World War II Malta was subjected to extremely heavy bombing by Italian and German planes, and in 1942 King George VI awarded the entire population the George Cross for bravery. Almost from the start of the period of British rule the Maltese agitated for increased political freedom. A constitution promulgated in 1921 granted considerable self-government but was revoked in 1936. Malta reverted to the status of crown colony. A similar constitution was granted in 1947 but was revoked after civil disturbances in 1959. Malta became fully independent in 1964 and chose to remain in the Commonwealth of Nations. It became a republic in 1974 and joined the United Nations in 1975. When the Labour party came to power in 1971 Prime Minister Dom Mintoff threatened to break ties with the West if the British did not increase rental payments for the naval base. A compromise agreement (effective through 1979) was reached by which the rent would be paid by the British while Malta would also receive a sum from the North Atlantic Treaty Organization and aid from Italy. In Aug., 1973, Malta initiated a seven-year economic development plan intended to free the country from its dependence on the rental payments, which were stopped in 1979 when the military bases were closed. The government of Nationalist Prime Minister Edward Fenech Adami, elected in 1987 and returned to office in 1992, has had to address the issue of the Roman Catholic church's role in the Maltese state, has maintained a neutralist stance, and has tried to balance its foreign policy between neighboring Libya and the economically more important Western nations.

    HISTORY IN BRIEF
DATE EVENT C 5th Millenium to C 3000 BC The first inhabitants of the islands of Malta are believed to have crossed over from Sicily. They brought with them their simple tools, corn seeds and domestic animals. These Neolithic settlers are believed to have traded with the Lipari Islands (North of Sicily), Pantelleria island (to the West of Malta) and Sicily itself for flint, stone and volcanic material that was not naturally available on Malta. C 3000 to C 2000-1800 BC The Ggantija Temples date to 3600-3200 BC and are believed to be the oldest known man-made structure anywhere in the world. C 2000-1800 to C 800 BC In the Bronze age, Malta probably experienced a cultural shift from the development of long established local cultures to what is believed to be the introduction of cultures by separate colonisations of Malta from elsewhere. C 800 BC Arrival of the Phoenicians who established the first Punic colony. C 600 BC Malta is taken over by Carthage. C 257 BC Start of the first Roman attacks on Carthagenian Malta.

    THE KNIGHTS of MALTA
I n 1530, many hundreds of years after the eolithic period, the Knights of the Order of St. John brought about another epoch of great cultural significance to the island. This is not to say that between the sudden disappearance of the Neolithic culture and the arrival of the Knights nothing happened. Quite the contrary. Many relics and remains bear witness to important historical events in this period. However, no unique or individual culture had originated from the many peoples - the Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Romans, Arabs, Normans, Castilians - who colonized the island during this prolonged interval. T he history of the Knights of St. John begins in the middle of the 11th century in the Holy Land. The Order's original duties were to care for the sick and wounded Christian pilgrims to the Holy Land and to help the poor. But soon after, their duties expanded. The fight against the "infidels" became of equal or even greater importance. The Knights also became "Soldiers of Christ". They acquired and maintained huge states and castles in the Holy Land and eventually owned a large fleet. W ith the loss of Acre to the Moslems in 1291, however, the fate of the Knights was sealed. They withdrew to Rhodes and acted as a shield against the Turks for two centuries until 1522 when Suleiman the Magnificent ousted the Knights from Rhodes. They needed a new homeland and, in 1530, moved to Malta to where they were given tenure by Emperor Charles V.

    http://www.focusmm.com/malta/ma_hist1.htm
    CULTURE AND HISTORY of MALTA
M alta's history was, in a sense, pre-destined for it by its excellent natural harbor and strategic location. The harbor provided a sheltered base for naval fleets while the island itself, located at the crossroads of the Mediterranean, enabled its colonizing powers to exercise control over shipping in this vast and turbulent sea. Hardly surprising, therefore, that Malta has always exerted an irresistible attraction to the would-be military powers of successive epoches. Control over Malta was a pre-requisite to domination of the Mediterranean. For this reason all the various powers that, at one time or other, held sway over the Mediterranean at that time exercised control over Malta. The list of Malta's colonizers is a long one, including the Phoenicians. Carthaginians, Romans, Byzantines, Arabs, Normans, Castilians, Knights of St. John, the French, and finally, the British. The number of successive colonists is indicative of the important role Malta played in the shaping of European and Mediterranean history. The list of important visitors to the island, from the Apostle Paul to Napoleon, Nelson, Eisenhower, Churchill and Franklin Delano Roosevelt is equally impressive. It is no exaggeration to suggest that Malta's history is a good starting point for a study of the history of the region. I f you want to enjoy Malta, soak up its history. History, in Malta, stares you in the face everywhere you visit on the islands. The good thing is that you will enjoy its captivating intensity.
