Where on Earth is Malta? By Frank L. Scicluna It's not unusual to get a sort of a puzzled expression on many faces when you mention the word Malta. You expect some people to say - "I've heard of Malta or I have met a Maltese but I don't exactly know where or what it is." If you ask them to have a guess, they might place Malta in Africa, or maybe in the Middle East. GEOGRAPHY It's such a small place. It is just an archipelago of islands about halfway between the coasts of Sicily and North Africa. Set in the clear blue Mediterranean Sea, the Maltese islands are the most southerly European country. The archipelago consists of five islands: Malta, Gozo and Comino, together with two other uninhabited islands Cominetto and Filfla. The total area is approximately 316 sq kms (Malta 246 sq km, Gozo 67 sq km, Comino 2.7 sq km). The longest distance in Malta from North West to South East is about 27 km, with 14.5 kms width in an East - West direction. The Islands are only 90 km south of Sicily and 290 km from the northern coast of Africa. HISTORY The strategic position of Malta, Gozo and Comino has made these Mediterranean islands a crossroad of history and a bone of contention. The powers of Europe's past knew it well as a stepping-stone between Europe and North Africa. Involved in Malta's history are the Stone-Age and Bronze-Age people, Romans and Phoenicians, Arabs, Normans and Carthaginians, Castilians, French and British; from whom Malta became independent in 1964. Napoleon Bonaparte did unutterable damage in an only six-day occupation; and Malta stood firm against Hitler despite massive bombing during World War II, deservedly earning the nation the George Cross medal from King George VI (April 1942) and depicting it on the left hand corner of the flag.

In 736 bc they were occupied by the Greeks, who called the colony Melita, and later the islands passed successively into the possession of Carthage and Rome. At the division of the Roman Empire in ad 395, Malta was awarded to the Eastern Roman Empire. The islands were occupied by Arabs in 870. A Norman army conquered the Maltese Arabs in 1090, and Malta was later made a feudal fief of the kingdom of Sicily. In 1530 Holy Roman Emperor Charles V granted Malta to the Knights of Saint John of Jerusalem, who ruled the islands until the 19th century. After a famous and unsuccessful siege by the Ottoman Empire in 1565, the Knights fortified Valletta so strongly that it became one of the greatest Mediterranean strongholds. The earliest archaeological remains date from about 3800 BC. Neolithic farmers lived in caves like those at Dalam (near Birzebbuga) or villages like Skorba (near Nadur Tower) and produced pottery that seems related to that of contemporary eastern Sicily. An elaborate cult of the dead of Stone Age or Copper Age culture evolved about 2400 BC. Initially centring around rock-cut collective tombs such as those at Ggantija (near Xagra) and Hagar Qim (near Zurrieq), it culminated—probably through contacts with the cultures of the Cyclades and Mycenae—in the unique underground burial chamber (hypogeum) at Hal Saflieni (near Raal Gdid). This culture came to a sudden end about 2000 BC, possibly as a result of invasions. The culture that replaced it, of southern Italian flavour, is evidenced today only by fragmentary remains.

History and Government
History:
For the next 250 years Malta was a bulwark against Turkish ambitions in Europe, notably in 1565 when, against overwhelming odds, the island was successfully defended. Napoleon briefly held Malta in the last three years of the 18th century, but a British-backed rebellion forced him to retreat and the British ruled for the next 181 years. The most famous episode in Malta's recent history was the heroic defence of the island during World War II for which the nation was awarded the George Cross. In 1956 a referendum came down heavily in favour of full integration with Britain, a policy then backed by the governing Maltese Labour Party (MLP) under Dom Mintoff. Successive rounds of talks failed, and by 1961 independence was sought by both the major political parties, the other being the conservative Nationalist Party then led by Dr Borg Olivier.
Government: il Kamara tad Deputati (House of Representatives). The assembly has 65 members elected every five years in multi-seat constituencies.

Established in 1865, the hotel boasts an architectural influence of the high Victorian period. At that time Malta was a British colony and many of the people starting imitating British lifestyles, including building their stately homes along their architectural styles. In fact the Imperial Hotel boasts a grandiose sweeping staircase in its lobby. It is one of the most beautiful examples of such staircases still found today, and in fact it was featured in a movie by Roger Moore in the 1970s. The furniture that is found in our hotel is also a work of art. We have several unique pieces amongst which a lovely mantelpice clock dating back from Louis XIV and some beautiful antique mirrors in our lobby (see 360 degree panoramic photo However, seeing is believing and we do invite you to come and see for yourselves the gems to be found at the Imperial Hotel.

The Order in the 20 th Century
(as seen by the Obedience of Malta)
During the regency of the 44th Grand Master, H.R.H. Francisco de Paula de Borbón y de la Torre, Duke of Seville and Grandee of Spain, the Order came to be run by the Spanish Marquis of Cardenas de Montehermoso. He, as appointed Grand Referendary until his death in 1965, effectively directed the Order's affairs. The Duke of Seville died on 6 December 1952 and was succeded by his son, H.R.H. Don Francisco Enrique de Borbón y de Borbón, Grandee of Spain, elected 45th Grand Master. Because he was an active military officer in the Spanish army (Colonel) and resided in Spain, he was unable to dedicate himself to the Order as fully as he would have wished, so in 1956 he appointed the late H.E. Duke de Brissac, living in Paris, as Administrator General.
The geographical separation of the administration (Paris) and magisterial (Madrid) seats of the Order became the source of much friction and misunderstanding. This eventually resulted in one faction of the government of the Order withdrawing its support from Don Francisco de Borbón and summoning a "Chapter General" of the Order with the result that on 20 May 1967 H.R.H. Charles Philippe de Bourbon-Orléans, Duke of Alençon, Vendôme and Nemours, great-great-grandson of Louis Philippe, King of the French, was elected 46th Grand Master, and H.R.H. Prince Michel de Bourbon-Orléans, son of H.R.H. Henri Count of Paris, was nominated Coadjutor. Don Francisco Enrique de Borbón y de Borbón, who had strongly contested the Chapter's decision, was named Grand Master emeritus.

HISTORY
Because of their strategic position, Malta and Gozo have been inhabited for the past 7,000 years. The two islands have a long and varied prehistoric period: Neolithic, Copper and Bronze age civilisations lasted more than 4,000 years.
One can still admire vestiges of those remote times in form of impressive stone temples, a unique hypogeum and remains of skilful handicrafts. The first known people to settle in Malta were the Phoenicians, who reached these shores on their trading ventures in the 9th century BC. They were succeeded by their Punic kinsmen, the Carthaginians, who were eventually conquered by the Romans in the 3rd century BC. The Romans governed these islands until the division of the Roman Empire in the 4th century AD. Arabs from North Africa occupied the Islands from the 9th to the 13th century and when the last Arab rulers were driven out in the year 1249, they left behind them notable imprints of their culture on the language of the Maltese people.
After the Norman overlords, Swabian and Angevin dynasties ruled for brief periods and at the beginning of the 14th century, the Islands fell under Aragonese domination. In 1530, the King of Spain, Emperor Charles V, granted the Islands on fief to the international Order of the Knights of St. John of Jerusalem. The Knights administered the Islands for 268 years until 1798, when Napoleon Bonaparte drove them from these shores and occupied the country in the name of the French Republic.
Following a brief occupation the French were forced to surrender after two years of a land and sea blockade by combined British and Maltese forces, and in 1800, Malta became a part of the British Empire. In 1964, Malta attained its Independence. and ten years later, in 1974, it was declared a Republic within the Commonwealth.

    http://www.orderofmalta-malta.org/4.htm
HISTORY The period 1175 -1185 saw a peak in rivalry with the diminution of funds from Europe. Both Orders were of undoubted valour and unbreached bravery but the Hospitallers through their Hospitium were chiefly devoted to the care of the sick and the ill. The Knights were homeless for seven years and spent this period peregrinating in Nice, Civitavecchia, Viterbo and Syracuse in Italy. In March 1530 the Emperor Charles V of Spain offered the Maltese Islands as a perpetual fief for the annual rent of a Falcon. L’Isle Adam accepted the King’s offer as the harbours (which could not be offered elsewhere) were ideal for the Order’s maritime powers. He thus became the first Grand Master of “The Knights of Malta.” The Order of St. John and the Island of Malta share many a historical chapter. Their liaison spans a period of 268 years namely from 1530 to 1798 during which time the Order was first to evolve into a respected power, and after the Christian battle of Lepanto in 1571, an indomitable maritime war machine. During the Malta phase, the Order was ruled by twenty-eight Grand Masters, the most well know being Jean Parisot de la Valette (1557-1568), in picture below, when the famous Great Siege of 1565 marked the bravery of the Order and the Maltese for ever in world history.

International Animal Rescue (Malta) was set up in 1993, when John Hicks, executive director of International Animal Rescue and I decided to set up a branch in Malta. The decision was taken following a number of visits to the Islands by Mr. Hicks in connection with animal welfare works and International Animal Rescue (Malta) was born following meetings with different groups on the island with whom IAR has always had good relations. Before opening the first official IAR group outside the United Kingdom I worked for six years for the Malta Ornithological Society - now known as Birdlife Malta - and was the founder member of the Marine Life Care Group. Ten years ago I realised it would be beneficial to set up my own voluntary organisation. With the help of volunteers I set up the Malta Wildlife Hospital. This group was a success because Birdlife (Malta) gave us all their support at the initial stages and it continues to this day. From the very start we were also given the necessary support by the Ministry of Environment. I set up this hospital because I realised that man is gradually transforming our planet into a place inhospitable to wild animals. Apart from the natural dangers animals now have to contend with mans guns, mans poisons, mans roads and mans machinery destroying nesting sites, marshlands, seashores and the countryside.

DATE EVENT C 5th Millenium to C 3000 BC The first inhabitants of the islands of Malta are believed to have crossed over from Sicily. They brought with them their simple tools, corn seeds and domestic animals. These Neolithic settlers are believed to have traded with the Lipari Islands (North of Sicily), Pantelleria island (to the West of Malta) and Sicily itself for flint, stone and volcanic material that was not naturally available on Malta. C 3000 to C 2000-1800 BC The Ggantija Temples date to 3600-3200 BC and are believed to be the oldest known man-made structure anywhere in the world. C 2000-1800 to C 800 BC In the Bronze age, Malta probably experienced a cultural shift from the development of long established local cultures to what is believed to be the introduction of cultures by separate colonisations of Malta from elsewhere. Count Roger
.The Arabs in Sicily were divided, and taking advantage of the situation, Count Roger the Norman, after a series of compaigns, subdued that island to Norman Rule.
Count Roger had invaded the islands to make sure his southern flank was secure from a possible Arab attack, having reduced the Arabs to a state of vassalage and releasing the foreign Christian slaves, he returned to Sicily without even bothering to garrison his prize.
In Sicily itself the Normans followed the same enlightened policy and although the Christian Faith was regarded as the official religion there, nobody was persecuted because of his race or for his religous beliefs.
In 1127, Roger II the son of Count Roger, led a second invasion of Malta; having overrun the Island he placed it under a more secure Norman domination under the charge of a Norman governor. He also garisoned with Norman soldiers the three castles then on the islands. From about this period the Maltese moved back gradually into the European orbit to which they had belonged for a thousand years prior to the Arab interlude.
Because the last Norman king died without a male heir, the new masters of the Maltese islands came, in turn, from the ruling houses of Germany, France and Spain: the Swabians (1194); the Angevins (1268); the Aragonese (1283) and finally, the Castillians (1410).

    Back Malta Overview
    Cradle of the Mediterranean
Malta has often been referred to as the island of sunshine and history. And with good reason too. For throughout your stay in Malta you will find plenty of both.
If you want to enjoy Malta, soak up its history. History, in Malta, stares you in the face everywhere you visit on the islands. The god thing is that you will enjoy its captivating intensity. Culture In 1530, many hundreds of years after the Neolithic period, the Knights of the order of St. John brought about another epoch of great cultural significance to the island. This is not to say that between the sudden disappearance of the Neolithic culture and the arrival of the Knights nothing happened. Quite the contrary. Many relics and remains bear witness to important historical events in this period. However, no unique or individual culture had originated from the many peoples - the Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Romans, Arabs, Normans, and Castilians - who colonized the island during this prolonged interval.
The history of the Knights of St. John begins in the middle of the 11th century in the Holy Land. The Order's original duties were to care for the sick and wounded Christian pilgrims to the Holy Land and to help the poor. But soon after, "infidels" became of equal or even greater importance. The Knights also became "Soldiers of Christ." They acquired and maintained huge estates and castles in the Holy Land and eventually owned a large fleet.

Overview The intelligent visitor is never satisfied with just skimming the surface of his vacation destination. An appetite for learning urges visitors to delve deeper into the origins and history of the country and the people in Malta. In this respect few other countries provide as much satisfaction, for the island is steeped in history. Every square inch of its land, its temples and monuments bear witness to a civilization which, in many ways, is unparalleled. In spite of its small size Malta's strategic location, at the crossroads of the Mediterranean, has meant that, over the centuries, the island has played a very important role in the vicissitudes of the region, right from the early days of civilization up to the present. All the various periods of Malta's history make fascinating reading, but there are two particular periods - the neolithic period and the period of the Knights of St John - which stand out from the rest because they are unique to Malta. On their own the remains of these two periods constitute a good enough reason to visit Malta.
