Ingis World Reisen Malta "History" Introduction Though Malta and Gozo are small, their history is great because they are situated right in the middle of the Mediterranean and at the ancient crossroads of traders and invaders. Many of them occupied the island and left their traces so that nowadays Malta is an interesting mix of different cultures and offers a wide and interesting variety of archeological and architectural treasures, all this under the Mediterranean sun, surrounded by the deep blue sea. The Prehistoric Temples More than 5,000 years ago there was a highly complex society with a religion, gods and priests, oracles, animal sacrifices and burial rites. In these times the prehistoric temples of Hagar Qim and Mnajdra were built, approximately 1,000 years older than the pyramids of Giza. It's still a secret how the enormous rocks of several tons have been moved. Torn Between the Powers of the Mediterranean Malta has been under the control of the Carthaginian empire (the Phoenicians), the Romans, the Byzantine empire and the Arabs. From 1090 on it was colonized by the Normans, the Germans, the French and the Spanish. The Knights of the Order In 1530 another period of great historical significance started: the golden era of the Knights. Emperor Charles V had given the islands to the "Hospitallers Knights of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem".

Arrival of man in Malta. The first inhabitants of the islands of Malta are believed to have crossed over from Sicily. They brought with them their simple tools, corn seeds and domestic animals. These Neolithic settlers are believed to have traded with the Lipari Islands (North of Sicily), Pantelleria island (to the West of Malta) and Sicily itself for flint, stone and volcanic material that was not naturally available on Malta. History General Infomation
In spite of its small size, Malta's strategic location at the cross-roads of the Mediterranean has meant that, over the centuries, the island has played a very important role in the region, right from the early days of civilisation to the present times. All periods of Malta's history make fascinating reading. The particular periods that we are going to cover are:

    The Neolithic period

Until recently, the Egyptian pyramids were thought to be the oldest architectural monuments in existence. Recent archaelogical research however, has shown that the earliest Neolithic temples on Malta are about 1000 years older than the famous pyramids of Giza. Huge rocks, several tons in weight were used in the construction of these temples. How these enormous loads were moved, or even lifted, 5000 or 6000 years ago remains a mystery.
The earliest temples, such as the one at Ggantija on Gozo, were built by the piling of huge rocks on top of each other. They did not have any carving or decoration. Later temples, such as the one at Hagar Qim, in Malta were made of huge stones fitting very closely together and ornately decorated. Carving was done with only very primitive flint and obsidian tools. No archaeological remains made of metal from this period have been discovered on Malta. One theory is that prehistoric people did not use metal because they foresaw, in its use, their own future destruction.
The subterranean burial place at Malta's Hal Saflieni, the so-called Hypogeum, is an even more astonishing relic and its accidental discovery in 1902 caused quite a sensation in world archaelogical circles. The temple must have been literally carved into the rocks over hundreds of years with simple tools made from flint and obsidian. Starting at ground level the Hypogeum descends several storeys below ground and covers an area of more than 500 square metres. The Hypogeum was certainly a place of worship and burial - the bones of over 7000 people have been found - and could also have been used as a place for the training of priestesses. A number of relics support this hypothesis.

... Books The world's oldest order of chivalry, the Sovereign Military Hospitaller Order of Saint John of Jerusalem, of Rhodes, and of Malta, more commonly known as the Order of Malta or simply the S.M.O.M. , has its origins in a hospice and confraternity in Jerusalem founded some time before the First Crusade (1099). According to most accounts, this was undertaken with the financial assistance of some wealthy merchants of the Italian port city of Amalfi to aid European pilgrims to the Holy Land. (The Amalfitans still commemorate their support of the Order in an annual observance.) The original Christian hospice may have been founded as early as circa 1020. The first rector of what was to become known as the "Order of the Hospital" was the Blessed Gerard. With his Bull of 15 February 1113, Pope Paschal II sanctioned the establishment of the Hospitallers' order, dedicated to its patron, Saint John the Baptist. The Pontiff placed the Order under the direct protection and ecclesiastical authority of the Holy See. Pope Callixtus and subsequent Pontiffs granted the Order additional privileges over the next century. Gerard himself died in 1120 but the work of the hospice, which at one point was said to house two thousand patients, continued. By 1126, the Order had begun its military role in the defence of pilgrims in the Holy Land, building castles and other fortifications throughout Palestine. Their seat was the vast Krak-des-Chevaliers, acquired in 1142. Built upon an older Arab structure, it was the knights' chief stronghold by 1144 and finally fell during a siege in 1271. The imposing fortress still stands today.

    http://www.angelfire.com/al/AttardBezzinaLawrenc/123.html
    Arrival of the first Jews
The history of the small Jewish Community of Malta goes back to the arrival of the Semitic Phoenician settlers almost three thousand five hundred years ago. It is believed that they were accompanied by Israelite mariners from the seafaring tribes of Zevulon and Asher. At the time in the city of Tyre lived Princess Jezebel, who in 906BCE married the Jewish Sultan Omri’s Ohab. After this marriage relations between the Jews and the Phoenicians grew so warm and cordial that they began to sail the seas and occupy various lands together. Some of them stayed in our islands.
    The First Evidence
We have evidence that at the time the Phoenicians were occupying Malta, the first Jews landed on Gozo and there they left behind the first signs of their presence. You can find this near the inner apse of the southern temple of Ggantija in Xaghra, one cannot fail to notice that on the ground under your feet is scratched the first Jewish evidence on Gozo.
This Jewish evidence is an inscription in the Phoenician alphabet, discovered and made known in 1912 by Ms N. Erichson and Ms. R. Cleveland. This inscription is in two lines and has ten words: seven in the first line and three in the second. Translated this inscription reads,
"To the love of our Father Jahwe".

    History and Government
History: Malta's situation in the central Mediterranean has made it an important strategic base since the earliest days of navigation. The first civilisation to leave any significant remains flourished in the third millennium BC, building many megalithic temples. Later the island was occupied by the Phoenicians, the Carthaginians and the Romans. Christianity arrived early, in about AD60, when St Paul was shipwrecked off the coast, and the religion rapidly established itself. On the partition of the Roman Empire, Malta passed under the control of Constantinople. Arab attacks during the eighth and ninth centuries culminated in the surrender of the islands to the governor of Muslim Sicily in 870, but subsequently the Normans reconquered Sicily, and Malta passed back to Christian control in 1090.
The Norman rule of the 12th century witnessed a great expansion of trade and a flowering of the arts and sciences, reflecting the splendours of Sicily itself, but the death of the last Hautville king in 1194 ushered in a period of confusion. Prosperity alternated with internal chaos for the rest of the Middle Ages, as the island repeatedly became caught up in the great dynastic struggles of the Mediterranean. The Hohenstaufer (mainly Frederick II), the Angevins, the Aragonnese, the Venetians, the Genoese, the Papacy, the kings of France and the Arabs - all, at various times, attempted to gain control of Malta. Political stability did not return until the 16th century, when Malta, together with Sicily, became part of the vast empire of Charles V, who in 1530, recognised the strategic value of the islands for Christendom, by granting them to the Knights of St John.

    http://www.um.edu.mt/history.html
    HISTORY
The University of Malta traces its origins to the founding of the Collegium Melitense in 1592. This college was run by the Jesuits and catered for non-Jesuit students. In 1578, Pope Gregory XIII empowered the Jesuits to confer the degrees of Magister Philosphiae and Doctor Divinitas. However, other subjects such as Grammar and the Humanities were also taught.
Following the abatement of the plague of 1675, Grand Master Nicol˜ Cotoner appointed Fra Dr. Giuseppe Zammit as "lettore" in Anatomy and Surgery at the Sacra Infermeria on the 19th October 1676. Zammit went on to establish the first medical library on the island as well as a medicinal herbal garden in one of the ditches of Fort Saint Elmo.
After the expulsion of the Jesuit Order from Malta in 1768, Grand Master Pinto appropriated all the revenue accruing from its property on the island and established a "Pubblica Universitˆ di Studi Generali". The decree constituting the University was signed by Pinto on the 22nd November 1769. Two years later, a Collegio Medici was set up as one of the faculties making up the University. It appears that the Medical Faculty was the only one staffed solely by local lecturers, a tradition which has been maintained through the centuries.
During the brief French interregnum of 1798, Napoleon abolished the University. Fortunately, shortly after the French were forced to leave, Sir Alexander Ball re-instituted the University. During the British period the University's statutes and regulations were brought into line with universities in the United Kingdom. The present coat of arms and the motto "Ut Fructificemus Deo" were proposed in 1923 by the rector, Professor Sir Themistocles Zammit. Following the Second World War, the Library and support structures were strengthened. In 1968 a new Medical School was built near St Luke's Hospital in Guardamangia and, at the same time, the new campus at Msida was inaugurated.

Consisting of three islands - Malta, Gozo and Comino - the Maltese archipelago has a colourful history, a legacy of its position right in the centre of the cradle of civilization, as the Mediterranean Sea is often referred to.
Its earliest inhabitants arrived from Sicily. The islands have passed into the hands of the Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Romans, Byzantines, Arabs, Normans, Sicilians, the crusading Knights of the Order of St. John, the French, and finally, the British - all of whom have created the rich culture evident today.
More than 1000 years before the Great Pyramid was constructed in Egypt, Maltese islanders were building their own monuments. Their well-preserved megalithic temples are the oldest surviving freestanding structures in the world. This dates habitation on the islands of Malta and Gozo to more than 6000 years. Neolithic, Copper and Bronze Age civilizations have left impressive prehistoric remains.
The first known colonisers to arrive on the islands were the Phoenicians, who set a precedent for foreign invasion. They were succeeded by the Carthaginians, and then the Romans, who made Malta part of their empire in 208 BC.
