SOUTH AFRICAN SNAKES INTRODUCTION: The wilds of Africa are often associated with snakes and rightly so, but, unfortunately, usually for the wrong reasons. While most people are afraid of snakes, South Africa is well known amongst herpetologists and snake lovers for the interesting variety of species of which some are highly priced in the pet trade. Because of the potential pressure by the export trade on natural populations, the collecting, keeping, trading and export of snakes is strictly controlled. In general they are timid creatures which will avoid confrontations except in self defense. Most species are actually harmless, graceful, elegant and some even pretty to beautiful, but it also can not be denied that a few do look nasty, some are very dangerous and may take on terrifying poses and behaviour patterns when they feel threatened. A few days later I received the Mamba Black Mamba and King Cobra (fortunately not the biting varieties, though every bit as sinister, as you soon will read). Immediately upon connection I was amazed at what I was hearing - FAR more detail, greater clarity and resolution, a much quieter background. before the power cords were connected to the components - they were simply plugged into the wall! PowerSnakes actually absorb power line noise, improving the sound of any component on that circuit. Thus, they can better your system without being connected to a component. This effect was immediately obvious in my system, but Caelin tells me that characteristic will vary system to system. But hold on to your hats, it gets better, much better. After the minimum recommended 100 hours of break-in (4-5 weeks is required to realize full performance - Yikes!), I connected a Black Mamba and King Cobra to my components. The improvement was startling, a marked advance over the very good AC power cables already in use. In fact, the amount of difference was at least as great as you would expect when upgrading from stock power cables to a good aftermarket unit. The changes in my system were far from subtle and bordering on the profound. There was a dramatic increase in both background silence and resolution of fine detail. The bass, oh my, the bass was literally transformed! I have never heard such a remarkable improvement in extension, power, and accuracy from a simple cable change. The improvement shocked even these jaded ears.

All data in the table that follows must be viewed with grave suspicion. The Mouse LD50 is a figure that is indicative of a dosage that will kill 50% of the mice envenomated within 24 hours. These are standard 20 g mice. Thus a simple calculation involving yield and LD50 SHOULD be indicative of how many mice such a snake is capable of killing and by very crude approximation the weight of a human it would kill. Example: Dendroaspis polylepis (Black Mamba) has a LD50 (subcutaneous) of 0.32 mg/kg and a yield of 50.0 - 120.0 mg of venom. This means that it takes 0.32mg of venom to kill 500 grammes, of mice (remember it only kills half of those it is administered to). We use a standard 20g mouse, thus there are 50 mice to a kilogramme or 25 mice to 500 grammes. 1 mg of venom is enough to kill 78.125 mice. That is 1 divided by 0.32 and the result multiplied by 25. The snake yields up to 120 mg of venom so we multiply our result by 120 and arrive at a figure of 9375 mice. Or, by extrapolation, 187.5 kg of human(s). We do know from reliable records that this snake has killed 11 adult humans in a single attack. Thus the mouse LD50 obviously does not tell the whole story! It is however a baseline comparison that has some merits. Mice are not humans. The testing has been done in various places where standards differ from laboratory to laboratory. Some data comes from snakes that were not - or cannot - be reconciled with an actual species.

Encyclopedia mamba mamba, name for African snakes of the genus Dendroaspis, in the cobra family. Widely distributed throughout Africa except in the deserts, mambas have extremely toxic venom. When attacking they raise the front of the body high off the ground and aim at the head or trunk of the victim. They do not have hoods (as do the Asian cobras), but some can inflate their necks in a threatening gesture. Members of some species are very aggressive, displaying a greater tendency to attack than do most snakes; nevertheless, their reaction to danger is often flight. The so-called black mamba ( Dendroaspis polylepis ), actually dark brown to gray, may grow up to 14 ft (4.3 m) long and is the most feared of the mambas. It lives mostly in open country and preys on small mammals and birds. The green mamba ( D. angusticeps ) is a more arboreal snake, found in forest and bush country.
