... Wild Side: Tree Crab Manatees Up Close Manatees are like nothing else you'll ever see. Averaging 13 feet long and weighing more than a ton, they are big and slow moving, with a face only their mother would love. They are also one of nature's most gentle creatures, with only about 2,500 left in the wild. During cold winter months when local water temperatures fall below 70 degrees Fahrenheit, the manatee needs to find warm water or it will die. The congregating of manatees around warm water sources such as natural springs or power company outflows is the best time for viewing them. Upwards of 300 or so manatees congregate in the Orange River every year from mid-November through mid-April, seeking warmth from the warm discharge waters from Florida Power and Light's Fort Myers plant. Visitors can view them from Manatee Park , built especially for this purpose. Protecting the Manatees
Manatees surface to breathe every three or four minutes. Patience and timing are important to spot a manatee surfacing, and estimating their speed and direction of travel. Manatees swim at a pace similar to a kayak, surfacing at steady intervals for air. Given their slow movement and choice of shallow water environments, it's important when boating to be on the lookout for them. Manatees are an endangered species and boaters are urged to slow down and to obey signs and no wake zones, giving manatees time to swim out of the way of approaching vessels. Be alert to signs of manatee presence like swirling in the water and snouts breaking the surface. Wearing polarized sunglasses will help you to see below the water's surface. Also, avoid boating over sea grass beds and shallow water areas; do not enter designated or posted manatee sanctuaries.

WEST INDIAN MANATEE
Trichechus manatus DESCRIPTION:
Manatees and their relatives are the only vegetarian marine mammals. They are sometimes known as sea cows, and, like cows that live on land, they eat grass but sea grass. They weigh up to 3,500 pounds (1,600 kg) and reach 13 feet (4 m) in length. They have a mermaid-like tail. In fact, manatees probably inspired the legends about sirens, or mermaids, who beckoned sailors at sea, as their scientific classification suggests: they are in the Order Sirenia. RANGE/HABITAT: BEHAVIOR: Manatees are harmless and are the slowest marine mammal. They have no defense system except for fleeing, and do not fight for food or territory. They have few natural enemies, except man. Manatees eat 100 to 150 pounds (45-68 kg) of plants per day. Their big appetites and grazing helps to keep waterways free and flowing. When they are not eating, they are usually sleeping. However, they are known to body surf. Because of their need for warm water, manatees often congregate in the warm water effluents from power plants. Manatees communicate with squeaks and squeals. They are very tactile, "kiss" each other in greeting, and nuzzle snout to snout. They embrace with their flippers.

Florida Manatee ( Trichechus manatus latirostrus Manatees are aquatic mammals. They breathe air; they have hair; they are warm-blooded; they don’t lay eggs; and they give milk to their babies. "Aquatic" (uh-kwa-tick) means that they live in the water. Because they live in the water, they are different from other mammals. Since fur gets heavy and cold when it is wet, manatees don’t need it. Instead, they have whiskers on their skin, and thick layers of fat keep them warm. The milk they give to their babies is very rich with fat, so the baby manatee can grow quickly and stay warm. Manatees usually come to the surface every 3-4 minutes to breathe fresh air. They sleep on the bottom and float up every 20 minutes for a breath. Cool manatees facts: Manatees are herbivores (ur-bi-vorz). This means they only eat plants like manatee grass, turtle grass, hydrilla, water hyacinth, and water lettuce. Sometimes small snails and water animals will be eaten along with the grass accidentally. This gives the manatees extra protein. Since manatees eat over 150 pounds of grass a day, their teeth wear down quickly. Because of this, manatees are always growing in new teeth in the back, so the old ones just fall out the front! Manatees migrate.

As mammals, manatees must surface to breathe air. As vegetarians, they spend up to eight hours a day pulling plants toward their mouths with their flippers and flexible lips. A large manatee eats up to 200 pounds (91 kilograms) of sea grass and water hyacinths in a single day.

Manatees: Supremely Adapted, Seriously Endangered
by David Salvesen

It's hard to imagine how a manateea 1,000-pound creature with a body like a fat cucumber and a face packed with wrinkles and whiskerscould be mistaken for a mermaid. But apparently some European sailors did just that, perhaps suffering from the deprivations of prolonged sea voyages, or maybe from a lack of spectacles. The legendary alluring qualities of manatees are also reflected in the name of the order to which they belong: Sirenia, after the sea nymphs of Homer's Odyssey, whose mesmerizing songs lured wayward seafarers to their deaths. Unfortunately, now and in the past, seafarers have often been the ones killing manatees, a situation conservationists are struggling to control before these graceful, gentle mammals are gone. Manatees, along with their cousin the dugong, are also known as sea cows, and this name is apt. Like cows, manatees spend most of their time eating and resting, inhabiting shallow, slow-moving rivers, estuaries, bays, and canals rather than grassy pastures. For six to eight hours each day, manatees graze on floating vegetation, sea grasses, and freshwater plants. In that time, a manatee consumes an amount of vegetation equivalent to about 11 percent of its body weight. With the usually 10- to 12-foot-long manatees weighing anywhere from 800 to 3,500 pounds, that's between 88 and 385 pounds of greens a day.

          • Related Family: Dugongidae (Arctic Sea Cows - extinct - and Dugongs)
Manatees and dugongs are marine mammals of the order Sirenia. They originated in the middle Eocene period around 45 to 50 million years ago. They are gentle, plant-eating herbivores sometimes nicknamed "sea cows". The name manatee comes from the Haitian word manati . Today, their closest living relatives are elephants [Proboscideans], hyraxes [Hyracoidea] and aardvarks [Tubulidentata]. Manatees are classified as [sub-]ungulates, even though they live in the water. Their thick-skinned, streamlined, almost hairless bodies have forelimbs modified into flippers. The tail is enlarged and horizontally-flattened. Manatees are now quite rare. Perhaps only 2,500 are left in the USA. In ancient times, sailors mistook them for mermaids or sirens on account of their long tails. Today, they often bear scars on account of their collisions with boats, a major hazard. Manatees spend most of their time feeding, resting or travelling. They prefer shallow saltwater bays, slow-moving rivers, canals, estuaries and coastal waters. Manatees are quite agile creatures. A manatee uses its flippers and tail to steer itself. It moves its tail up and down to propel its body forward through the water. Manatees can swim vertically and upside down; they can do rolls and perform aquatic somersaults. Their extra-dense bones enable them to stay suspended at or below the water's surface.

This Week's Current
The Classroom Flyer Life Science Biology ... Sports March 2, 2001 Manatees or Humanity Searching for Manatees And, herein lies the problem.
  • What percentage of manatee deaths were caused by boaters?
These bewhiskered, ancient animals with the gentle temperament and no known defenses have no enemies except for humans. A cousin, the Stellar sea cow, was hunted to extinction just 27 years after it was discovered in the Bering Sea in 1741. Now manatees and their relatives, the dugongs, are endangered around the world. In some places, manatees are hunted for food, but in Florida, the story is more complex: Loss of habitat from development along the coast, a low rate of reproduction, and a high death rate from encounters with people are the main reasons that biologists fear for the manatees' future. The Sirens of Yesterday? There is a mystery associated with manatees. Were these creatures the Sirens of Greek myths? They carry the scientific name Sirenia for this reason. It's hard to believe that a sailor, even after months at sea, could mistake these creatures for the dangerous half-woman, half-bird whose seductive song would lure a sailor to his death. But manatees captured the popular imagination of explorers and sailors of old. Upon first seeing manatees (or possibly sea lions) in the Caribbean, Columbus wrote that these "mermaids were not half as beautiful as they are painted."

Manatee Awareness Month NOVEMBER IS MANATEE AWARENESS MONTH
and the beginning of the Manatee viewing season
in central Florida. Through wate r pollution, waterway congestion, boating accidents and other factors, the Florida manatee population has dwindled to approximately 2,400. Anyone heading Orlando-way should be sure to plan a daytrip to one of the public viewing facilities mentioned in FTF's Wild Florida: Manatee Sightings, or make a stop at SeaWorld Orlando to see their resident 'sea cows'. (For those who don't know, SeaWorld has become one of the state's most active partners to develop solutions to the Florida manatee crisis.) Here's an update on three recently rescued manatees you may see: Samantha, an adult female manatee rescued from a residential canal in Merritt Island in August 1999 has just graduated to eating lettuce - no longer dependent on tube feeding - and is gaining weight, making her a potential candidate for release into her natural habitat. Corey, a juvenile male rescued along with her, is doing well in the "Manatees: The Last Generation?" habitat and is also a potential release candidate. Unfortunately Electra, a female rescued from Titusville Marina in Titusville, remains under care in a larger medical pool at the SeaWorld rehabilitation facility.

Lagooner Manatees
Seasonally, there is a limited number of manatees (or "sea cows") in Florida's Brevard County area. For the most part you may not see manatees from March though December. During cold snaps December, January and February manatees transit the area to reach the warm water discharge at the Florida Power and Light power plant south of Titusville. Due to this you will occassionally see manatees during your boating trips, but not ALL the time. During the winter months several hundred manatees will seek out warm water coming from the power plant. Most mannatees go there during prolonged cold snaps that reduce the water temperature. Manatees need to live in water that's at least 68 degrees and they assemble at the power plant's when local water temperatures hit the lower 70's. The power plants have set up it's own viewing area but after the events of September 11, 2001 manatee viewing areas have been closed. If you want to view manatees you must approach by boat and Lagooner, Inc. has trips dedicated soley for wildlife and manatee observation. You may also elect to combine a fishng/wildlife trip while visiting our area.
