Bipolar Disorder
The heart that is soonest awake to the flowers
is always the first to be touched by the thorns.
Basic Terminology
Bipolar disorder is the medical name for manic depression. The terms may be used interchangeably. Bipolar disorder is a mental illness, but it is more appropriately described as a neurobiological brain disorder involving extremes in mood. It is one of the three major affective (mood) disorders . The other two affective disorders are unipolar disorder (depression only) and schizoaffective disorder. Most medical researchers believe that bipolar disorder is genetic. Click here to read the criteria for bipolar disorder from the American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual for Mental Disorders (DSM-IV). Click here to read the ICD-10 Classifications for Bipolar Disorder, from the World Health Organization. The DSM or ICD criteria are merely guidelines, sort of like a check-off list of symptoms. Newly-diagnosed people will sometimes go to the library or bookstore to learn about bipolar disorder. They are likely to get very confused by what they read, and wonder if the psychiatrist made a mistake! This is because bipolar disorder may be quite complex in its variations, a fact that the popular literature doesn't always address. Each individual has her or his own unique form of the illness. Some people have mild manias, called

The purpose of this Web page is to provide inspiration for those who have manic depression (bipolar disorder) or depression (unipolar disorder). The "Famous People List" originated in 1993, and was the first of its kind on the Web. I am indebted to contributors all over the planet who have made this list a success. The list includes living celebrities who have publicly stated that they have experienced manic depression or depression in their lives. The Bibliography contains the sources for this information. [ Note: Please do not re-post this list without my permission.] Contents of this Web page:

How the Lists Are Compiled:
These are lists-in-progress. When a name is suggested to me, I find documentation before adding the celebrity's name to the list. Hearsay (or speculation) is not enough evidence to include a name. Sources must be reliable, and may include biographies, autobiographies, printed articles, and radio and television interviews. In some cases, there has been personal interaction with the celebrity by the person who suggested the name. [ Click here to go to the Bibliography for the following lists.]

When Manic Depression is effectively treated - your life can be an absolute blast! Without treatment, however, the natural course of bipolar disorder tends to worsen. Over time a person may suffer more frequent (more rapid-cycling) and more severe manic and depressive episodes than those experienced when the illness first appeared. But in most cases, proper treatment can help reduce the frequency and severity of episodes and can help people with bipolar disorder maintain good quality of life. 10. Foundation For Mood Disorders
A research, educational, referral and information center, dedicated to mood disorders such as depression, manic depression, panic and anxiety states and obsessive compulsive disorders. Referrals, links, and public awareness information.
The Foundation is a research, educational, referral and information center, dedicated to mood disorders such as depression, manic depression, panic and anxiety states and obsessive compulsive disorders. It is the philosophy of the Foundation that these disorders are, in most cases, biologically caused and can be, for the most part, effectively and safely treated with non-addictive, mood-stabilizing medications, and in some cases with adjunctive psychotherapy and other psychological techniques. Yet millions of Americans experience unrecognized symptoms and therefore are untreated for mood disturbances that cause enormous suffering and hardship. The Foundation, under the leadership of Dr. Ronald F. Fieve, the American pioneer in the development of lithium therapy for bipolar disorder, also Professor of Clinical Psychiatry at Columbia Presyterian Medical Center, endeavors to educate and inform the public to combat these problems. This can be done through the following programs: Aimed at biochemical, behavioral, and genetic understanding of the causes of depression and anxiety disorders and developing new drug treatments to alleviate them.

Any links that would help us in gathering information on either schizophrenia, Multiple Personality, or any other illness would be great. Email them to us by going to the contact us page and e-mailing them. We have added two new sites, one on S.A.D., and the other on Schizophrenia. Be sure to go to our links page and chack them out! There are certain differences between manic depression and "plain" depression. These are differences in symptoms and signs, as well as treatments and causes.

    16. A Manic Depression Primer
threatening episode of depression (which was treated successfully with medication),he set upon himself the task of composing a primer on manicdepression.
by Dimitri Mihalas The bipolar (also called the manic-depressive) illness, caused by as yet unknown imbalances of neurotransmitters in the brain, is know to wreak havoc with countless lives in this country and all over the world. My interest in the illness stems from the fact that my father (now deceased) had it (the illness first manifested itself when I was around fourteen or fifteen). Needless to say, it placed significant emotional burden on me and my family. In retrospect however, I realize that a lot of the pain and suffering (for us anyway) was due simply to misinformation and/or lack of information about the illness. Although things are improving, especially in the U.S. and in the western hemisphere at least, I feel that the bipolar illness (unfortunately) still remains taboo and a cause of much unnecessary suffering for the patient and for the family/caregivers involved. This website is my minuscule effort to correct this situation. During graduate school in the late eighties, I had the privilege of meeting Dimitri Mihalas, then a distinguished professor of astronomy at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (and a member of the National Academy of Sciences). Though he suffers from the illness, he feels that he has actually "gained" instead of "losing" to it. He has also been a pioneer in attempts to increase public awareness of (and therefore decreasing the stigma associated with) the bipolar illness by the act of being completely open about it. Soon after a major, life-threatening episode of depression (which was treated successfully with medication), he set upon himself the task of composing a primer on manic-depression. Because of his openness, the primer is quite personal and many have thus found it to be useful in gauging their own experience with the illness. It also contains a
