My name is Carl and I'm a member of the Darlington (UK) branch of the Manic Depression Fellowship (MDF). The MDF is an association of independently based self-help groups throughout the UK. Its main aim is to help suffers and carers learn more and therefore understand better the nature of the illness. It is also hoped that we can help inform the public to what manic-depression is and therefore dispel some of the ill-informed myths surrounding it. Darlington members have just completed a video which it is hoped will further this educational role and also assist those newly diagnosed, additionally copies of the video will be available to health care workers and others involved with mental health. At Darlington, we meet once a month, normally the last Monday of the month, and generally are of an informal nature although guest speakers attend occasionally throughout the year. This past year, we have had a well respected, local psychiatrist speak about self-management, a pharmacist, a community psychiatric nurse (CPN), and a social worker. Branches also have access to leaflets and booklets published by the MDF and others. Groups, may also have, like Darlington, a library from which members may borrow books. I say members but there is no formal membership requirement, just turn up, and you'll be given a friendly welcome. Some of us retire to the local pub after although I hasten to add not to consume alcohol!!

Geodon Cuts Acute Mania Symptoms Pfizer said its antipsychotic drug ziprasidone performed better than a placebo in improving symptoms of acute mania in patients with bipolar disorder, a mood condition in which manic episodes alternate with depression. The drug is a serotonin and dopamine blocker, marketed in Brazil and the U.S. as Geodon. The Food and Drug Administration cleared ziprasidone in February 2001 to treat schizophrenia, and Pfizer plans to file a supplemental new drug application later this year for an acute mania indication. Pfizer said the randomized, double-blind study of 210 patients showed that ziprasidone improved manic symptoms within two days of treatment and maintained the benefits throughout the three-week study. Compared after seven days with patients who took a placebo, ziprasidone-treated patients showed improved symptoms of acute mania, psychosis and social functioning.

A Manic Depression, Bipolar Disorder Primer
The bipolar (also called the manic-depressive) illness, caused by imbalances of neurotransmitters in the brain, is known to wreak havoc with countless lives in this country as well as all over the world. My interest in the illness stems from the fact that my father is bipolar (the illness first manifested itself when I was around fourteen or fifteen). Needless to say, the emotional strain I and my family were placed under has been quite significant. In retrospect however, I realize that a lot of the pain and suffering for us was due simply to misinformation and/or lack of information about bipolar illness. Although things are improving, especially in the U.S. and in the western hemisphere at least, I feel that the bipolar illness (unfortunately) still remains taboo and a cause of much unnecessary suffering for the patient and for family/caregivers. This website is my minuscule effort to correct this situation. I hope you find the information helpful.

And I hope that I could help someone out by talking about the things no one else will. Maybe along the way I can learn to stand tall and just be ME! Me

I keep a bag right with me everywhere I go, In case I might need to wear it, so ME doesn't show.
I'm so afraid to show you ME, afraid of what you'll do,
You might laugh at ME, or say mean things...
Or I might lose you.
I'd like to take my bag off, to let you look at ME.
I want you to try to understand, and please,
love what you see.
So, if you'll be patient and close your eyes,
I'll pull it off slow.
Please understand how much it hurts, to let the real ME show. Now my bag is off. I feel naked! Bare! So cold! If you still love all that you see, you are my friend, pure as gold. I want to save my bag and hold it in my hand.

Welcome
Welcome to Cambridge Manic Depression Fellowship Self Help Group. We are one of over 100 local groups coming under the umbrella of the national charity, The Manic Depression Fellowship.
Our aim is to support people affected by manic depression (also known as bipolar affective disorder). That includes people with the diagnosis and their family and friends. All are equally welcome to join.
The group is run entirely by people affected in one way or another by manic depression. Our main strength is that only other people with MD really know what it is like to go through. Likewise, only a fellow carer appreciates the issues of looking after someone with this complex condition. You will find a wealth of knowledge and understanding as well as a place you can speak openly about your experiences. Follow the links to find out more about us.

Heart of a Tornado [The Pendulum] In the heart of a tornado, there is peace.
I will find it. Written by Trinity 11:12 am 1 comment no trackback Silent Mind [The Pendulum] anything Especially un -beautiful, aching strength of spirit.
My thoughts. In random order. I want to roll over and die. I want to cut my head off. I want to throw myself under the wheels of a huge, Mack truck. I want to choke on this next piece of ice in my drink. I hope a huge nuclear bombs lands on my house right NOW. want to happen, these are just the thoughts that fly across my brain sporatically, entirely with a mind of their own. From too much experience, I can recognize this to be a sign of depression seeping into my world. I am desperate to push it away and I wish it were only so easy as to close my eyes and wish for something different. A field with pretty wildflowers blowing in the wind...
It is the nature of the Beast that I cannot control it. I would not have mood swings if I could honestly control it. Emotional pain is not my idea of fun, I can assure you. ...

manic depression is also known as Bipolar Illness. Like depression, people with thisdisorder go through stages of depression, but Mania or Manic adds a cycle.

Manic Depression So, What's the Difference? Manic Depression is also known as Bipolar Illness. Like depression, people with this disorder go through stages of depression, but Mania or Manic adds a cycle.
Mania is a very "up" mood, over elated, over happy. Too much of anything is no good, and because of these cycles, people experiencing Manic Depression visit the two extremes of depression and elation.
Sure, sounds great to be able to be really happy and energetic all the time. However, with the elated mood, the sufferer will often talk rapidly, and become disjointed. There are three types of cycles that people may go through during mania. These are Rapid Cycle, Ultra-Rapid cycle and Ultradian cycles. All of these show how many episodes of mania the person goes through a year.
Rapid Cycles are most common, and this means 3 or 4 cycles of mania per year.
