About bipolar disorder / manic depression
Manic-depression is a chronic mental illness, a physical disease of the brain. There is no known cause, but there is a proven hereditary influence. Many bipolar people have parents or extended family who suffered from depression, hyperactivity, rages, suicide or any number of behaviors. It is not a condition that can be cured but it can be controlled by medication. If you think you may have bipolar disorder, go and see a doctor immediately. (See also "Bad Times and Blessed Times" , a testimony of one person with bipolar disorder.)
There are two aspects of the bipolar disorder. Manic "highs" and depression "lows." Often these are called mood swings. The manic state is the high part of the cycle. It is characterized by hyper or excentric behaviors:
  • euphoria; feelings of joy or wellbeing grandiose thinking; able to accomplish anything

Doctors fail to spot manic depression

Thousands of people suffering from manic depression are having to wait at least a year before they are diagnosed with the condition because many doctors do not recognise the symptoms. A survey of British psychiatrists to be published tomorrow will show that the illness, also known as bipolar disorder, is still shrouded in mystery, even though it is thought to affect one in every 100 people. Once it has been identified, the condition can be treated with medication and most patients go on to lead relatively stable lives, with little need for hospital services. But there is growing concern that many are slipping through the net, and spiralling into a deepening depression because they are not treated properly.

Manic Depression
Manic depression is the chronic illness which I have battled for almost twenty years. But every day, I am learning how to better live with it. Sometimes manic depression is referred to as bipolar disorder . Take your pick. It's an emotional disorder which is often overlooked by the sufferer, friends, family and sometimes even by mental health professionals. And perhaps the most frightening fact is that the suicide rate during a manic depressive episode is extremely high.
Hippocrates wrote about moods in the 5th century B.C. as a medical condition. More than 600 years later, Greek physician, Areteus recognized that both mania and depression could cycle within the same patient. But it wasn't until the end of the l9th century when a German psychiatrist, Emil Kraepelin coined the term "manic depression." The statistics are startling - - more than 2 million Americans suffer from the illness and millions of others are undiagnosed.
There is no standard pattern for a manic depressive's behavior. Some go from moderate to severe depression and move on to a full-blown episode of mania and then back to the depression before returning to a "normal state." Needless to say, this "flip flopping" of moods is usually very destructive and patients are frequently hospitalized and unable to work. The families of manic depressives are forced to deal with the consequences of their loved ones. My parents and sister suffered through a federal court conviction, a prison term, house arrest and ultimately electroshock treatment with me. The "more lucky" manic depressives are the ones who suffer with hypomania - - a mild form of mania, an illness with which they pretty much still function at their jobs or in relationships.

Manic Depression 'When I'm in a manic phase I feel as though I am capable
of anything and everything. This can be an amazing feeling,
but I sometimes get frustrated and angry with people. Ideas
flow constantly and quickly as if my brain is on fast-forward.
Everything happening in the world has significance on my life.
But when I'm depressed, it's as if I'm completely crushed and
living in slow motion. I feel capable of nothing and just want
to end it all.'
This booklet is aimed at anyone who has been given a diagnosis
of manic depression, and their family and friends. It should
explain what is understood of the causes and consequences of the diagnosis, what options are available to people, where they can get help and what they can do to help themselves. What is manic depression?
Someone diagnosed with manic depression may swing from moods of deep depression to periods of overactive, excited behaviour known as mania. Between these severe highs and lows there may be relatively

Tempering the Mania of Manic Depression
by Stephen L. Bernhardt
Bipolar Disorder - episodes of mania.
Any discussion of the process of bipolar disorder and mania cannot be entirely divorced from a discussion of the depressive response. Within any episode of mania lurks the possibility, the likelihood of impending depression. There are certain techniques and exercises which I have identified while dealing with my own periods of bipolar disorder mania which help temper the mania and thereby lessen the impact and severity of the subsequent depressive response. It is essential that you have read my article on Emotional Thought Stopping and are familiar with the concept and my suggestions for its use, before you attempt this exercise. I assume that if you are reading this in order to help temper your periods of bipolar disorder mania that this is not your first episode. Look back at your previous situation just prior to those episodes and see if you can identify if there was some event which triggered the episode and begin to identify how you felt at the start of the episode. It is important to be able to recognize these periods as early as possible so that you can begin this tempering exercise before it reaches a crisis stage. This is especially true if you begin your episodes with a euphoric feeling.
