Manitoba's First Explorers
Manitoba's first explorers were Aboriginal people who entered the region from the south over 11,000 years ago. At that time only a small portion of the province was accessible, as most of it was covered by an ice sheet or glacial lakes. These first people hunted now extinct species of Ice Age animals and manufactured a distinctive style of stone spear point. The scarcity of such artifacts indicates that the earliest explorers were members of a small, highly mobile population whose territory included present-day southern Manitoba and Saskatchewan. As time went on, the ice sheet gradually melted and the glacial lakes slowly drained away. The central and northern regions of Manitoba soon supported a variety of plant and animal resources that drew the attention of indigenous hunters and gatherers. By 7,000 years ago, most of the province had been explored and subsequently occupied by successive generations of Manitoba's first people. THE HONOURABLE GARY FILMON

Winnipeg's population exploded between 1900 and 1913 as thousands of immigrants flooded into the city. Answering the Canadian government's invitation to populate the West, new arrivals from Britain and Northern and Eastern Europe headed to the city's North End where housing was cheap and jobs available in nearby rail yards and factories. The Crump Block, part of which is recreated in the Canada Hall, was built on Main Street in 1905 to respond to the North End's growing need for commercial and professional services. Along with two other Canada Hall modules, the Union Hall and the Chinese Hand Laundry, the Crump Block and its two shop fronts, the Book and Music Supply Store and Print Shop, together form a street scene in Winnipeg during the first half of the twentieth century. The Crump Block (ca. 1908), 844-852 Main Street, Winnipeg, Manitoba (Daniel Smith, architect)

East European groups were especially visible in the new cultural landscape and eventually made up close to a third of the Prairie population. Many commercial enterprises emerged to cater to their cultural needs.

Lynn Lake is known as the "town that moved", thanks to the tremendous task of moving buildings from the mine site at Sherridan before the new town was ready in 1953. Today you can visit Lynn Lake's quaint mining museum. There's lots to see and do when you have 18 hours of daylight to play in during the summer months in the north.

The town of Leaf Rapids was carved out of the wilderness between 1971 and 1974 to serve employees of the newly opened Ruttan Mine, owned by Sherritt Gordon Mines Limited. In 1987 Sherritt Gordon sold the Ruttan Mine to Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Co., Limited. Located 25 km. east of Leaf Rapids, the copper and zinc mine is one of the largest and most modern in Canada. Visitors may tour it during the summer months. Leaf Rapids is laid out in a semi-circle of residential bays surrounding the unique town centre complex.

The Costume Museum of Canada in Dugald is home to a collection of 35,000 artifacts spanning 400 years. The collection represents the identity of everyday Canadians, urban and rural, public and private, through the garments that they made, purchased and wore. From July to September, travel with the museum to the City of Dreams - Winnipeg 1900 to 1914. Step off the train into the bustling heart of the prairies, the Chicago of the North, the Gateway to the West. It is a city energized with optimism and great expectations. As the population booms, the city prospers, becoming the financial and manufacturing centre for the West.

58. Paleo-Indian Traditions
culture and tools of the Clovis, Folsom, and Plano cultures of prehistoric North America.
http://www.umanitoba.ca/anthropology/Manitoba/paleo.html
Paleo-Indian Traditions
The Paleo-Indian period was the earliest firmly established era of human activity in the New World (10,000 - 8,000 B.C) and involved the spread of similar technologies and subsistence patterns in many parts of the continent. As elsewhere, it is represented in Manitoba by Clovis, Folsom, and Plano traditions and was dependent upon hunting of large game animals, originally extinct Pleistocene mammalian fauna and, later, the giant long-horned bison. This emphasis earned the first North Americans the title of "Big Game Hunters". Because much of Manitoba was covered by glacial ice and the meltwater which formed Lake Agassiz , Paleo-Indian sites are not abundant in the province. Points during the Clovis time, 10,000 - 9,000 B.C., are found in isolated occurrences west of the Manitoba Escarpment. During the Folsom phase (9,000 - 8,000 B.C.) Lake Agassiz dropped in elevation possibly allowing peoples to move into the Red River Plain. It rose again by 8,000 B.C. and began its final retreat approximately 700 years later. The end of this era is associated with the extinction of many big game species as the last Pleistocene ice age gave way to the modern climates of the Holocene.
