IOJD in Manitoba Job's Daughters began in Manitoba with the appointment of a Grand Guardian back in 1923! These Grand Guardians were responsible for promoting interest in the budding organization and attempting to instititute new Bethels. It is noted that in 1924 an interesting report was submitted on Manitoba's behalf. Mrs. Kathleen Wood took up the fight in 1924. Manitoba, in fact Canada, is not again mentioned in our history until 1931 when British Columbia made our Order international! Manitoba first Bethel was chartered on July 15, 1934. We was honoured to have May F. Pascoe serve as Supreme Director of Music in 1938-39. During Bethel 1's long stay as the only Bethel in Manitoba WAR broke out. We were part of the 11 reports submitted containing relief efforts amounting to $5 000 in War Bonds and Stamps, $10 000 cash donated to the Red Cross and purchase of War Stamps, 18 875 hours of sewing for the Red Cross and we knitted sweaters, mittens, scarves, helmets, wristlets, afghans, shawls and stretcher covers. 500 boxes of cookies and 500 filled and packed knapsacks were sent to Army Camps. 200 Daughters were blood donors, 130 took First Aid, 85 took Home Nursing, 150 took Nutrition, 50 took Canteen Courses, 50 Air Raid Wardens, 100 Messengers, 75 Ladies in Grey and 600 served at USO and on sugar rationing. Two Manitoba Daughters were in Service for our Country. Bethel 2 was chartered on December 20, 1949. Bethel 3 was offered Dispensation December 1, 1953 and was chartered March 16, 1954. Bethel 4 of Selkirk, the first non-Winnipeg Bethel, was offered Dispensation March 19, 1954 and was chartered October 12, 1954. Bethel 5 was offered Dispensation May 9, 1954 and we were chartered, as West Kildonan, Manitoba (now merely a suburb of Winnipeg) on Nov 21, 1954. In this year we monetarily contributed to the attendance of Job's Daughter representatives from Hawaii and Australia to Supreme Sessions. Bethel 6, in Brandon (putting B5 in a non-WG Bethel sandwich! Yeah!) was offered Dispensation September 14, 1955 and was chartered Februrary 26, 1956.

McMillan. pp.51,52) One winter night, after holding a meeting in Estevan, I traveled over the whole town to secure a place of shelter, but found none. I crawled into an implement shed and lay down. At 1:00 o'clock in the morning, I awoke so stiff that I could hardly move sufficiently to get circulation but, after much effort, I made my way to the railway station to wait till a train came along. I found ten men stretched out on the floor and benches. A good fire was blazing in the Cannon stove, which derives its name from its shape. There was only room enough to stand. To go into the cold again was unthinkable. Wearing a heavy winter coat which I could not remove, I stood till morning. The only standing place was uncomfortably near the stove and I was sleepy almost beyond endurance. About 5:30 a.m. a train arrived going north and I boarded it and fell asleep.

Desjardins got his ideas of financial co-operatives - of people pooling resources for their mutual benefit - from Europe, where one of the first credit societies was founded in 1852 by Friedrich Wilhelm Rafeissen, the mayor of Flammersfeld, Germany. Rafeissen was distressed at the near-starvation conditions endured by local farmers and townspeople, who were losing their homes and livestock to moneylenders who charged exorbitant interest rates. Dejardins saw that credit unions offered a way out. The first credit union in Manitoba was a caisse populaire, organized in 1937 by Father Benoit in the French farming community of St. Malo. Its citizens, like most farmers on the continent, were suffering during the Great Depression; Father Benoit brought them together to help each other financially. The first loan to a member — for $56.50, repaid in $2 monthly installments — financed the purchase of a cream separator. The Association's history is closely identified with the Canadian tradition. As Canada in the year 1967 celebrated it's 100th Anniversary of Confederation, the Army, Navy and Air Force Veterans in Canada commemorated the 127th year of its formation. Documentary evidence shows that the organization was in existence in 1840 under the title of the Army and Navy Veterans, and it is reasonable to believe that Units of the association were active before that date. Membership in the earliest Units was recruited from the ranks of Veterans of the War of 1812-14 and migrating Veterans of the Navy and Wellington's Army. So it is even possible to assume that some form of organization was in existence even as early as 1812. The first actual record of the Army and Navy Veterans in Canada indicates its existence in the City of Montreal in 1840, and that date is arbitrarily accepted as the time of founding. From 1812 to 1871 the Imperial Government kept a garrison in Canada for defence against the possibility of an American invasion. Many of the soldiers left the service to become settlers but retained affiliation with the Army and Navy Veterans. Similarly, many young Canadians took commissions in the Imperial Army and served as a connecting link between the service of Canada and England.

History of Gaming in Manitoba The Centennial Act authorizes the Centennial Committee to conduct and manage lotteries during Manitoba's 100th anniversary year. Manitoba Act is passed in 1971 establishing the Manitoba Lotteries Commission to manage government lotteries and the Manitoba Lotteries Licensing Board to license religious and charitable organizations to operate specific lottery schemes. In 1974, the Western Canada Lottery Foundation is established with membership from Manitoba, Alberta, Saskatchewan and British Columbia. The Inter-Provincial Lottery Corporation is created through an act of the Ontario Legislature, and shortly after is federally incorporated with the Western provinces. The Red River Exhibition and Festival du Voyageur receive approval to operate full-scale casinos for the duration other events. The province of Quebec joins the Inter-Provincial Lottery Corporation in 1978, with the Atlantic provinces joining in 1979. The federal government retires from the lottery field. Liba C.M., O.M., Lieutenant Governor of Manitoba Regional Heritage Fair Brings History to Life Aboriginal Centre of Winnipeg Thursday, May 9, 2002 - 10:00 a.m. Elders, honoured guests, students, ladies and gentlemen, good morning. As Lieutenant Governor of Manitoba, I am honoured to participate in the opening ceremonies of the Regional Heritage Fair 2002. It is very fitting that this pertinent heritage event is taking place here in this magnificent heritage landmark...which was built in 1904 as Winnipeg's CPR Station, where thousand of immigrants to Canada arrived by train to begin a new life in Manitoba. It is noteworthy that the building is now owned by Manitoba's original citizens and serves as the home of the Aboriginal Centre of Winnipeg. And it is significant that the Heritage Fair is one of a series of events with which we are celebrating a very special day in Manitoba's history...its 132nd birthday...officially observed on May 12. HISTORY AND GOVERNMENT HISTORY According to Hindu legend the greater part of Sri Lanka was conquered in prehistoric times by Ramachandra, the seventh incarnation of the supreme deity Vishnu. The written history of the country begins with the chronicle known as the Mahavansa. This work was started in the 6th century AD and provides a virtually unbroken narrative up to 1815. The Mahavansa was compiled by a succession of Buddhist monks. Because it often aims to glorify or to degrade certain periods or reigns, it is not a wholly reliable s ource despite its wealth of historical material. Ancient Sinhala The Mahavansa relates that the island was conquered in 504 BC by Vijaya, a Hindu prince from northeast India. After subjugating the aboriginal inhabitants, a people now known as Veddas, Vijaya married a native princess, encouraged emigration from the main land, and made himself ruler of the entire island. However, the realm (called Sinhala after Vijaya's patrimonial name) that was inherited by his successors consisted of the arid region lying to the north of the south-central mountain system. Members of th e dynasty founded by Vijaya reigned over Sinhala for several centuries. During this period, and particularly after the adoption in the 3rd century BC of Buddhism as the national religion, the Sinhalese created a highly developed civilization. Extant evid ence of their engineering skill and architectural achievements includes remnants of vast irrigation projects, many ruined cities, notably the ancient capital Anuradhapura, and numerous ruined shrines called dagabos.

Welcome to Grand Beach History Lake Winnipeg has been alternately sparkling in serenity and unleashing its fury on the silent shore for thousands of years. Many beaches dot its shoreline, but the largest, and most beautiful of all, is Grand Beach. The 3 kilometres of white sandy beaches are located only 80 kilometres from Winnipeg, making Grand Beach an attractive destination. Grand Marais , meaning Big Marsh. Today both French and English titles exist side by side, giving tribute to both beach and lagoon which combine to give the area a unique charm. Grand Beach is on the historic The Canadian Northern Railway completed laying the track to Grand Beach and developed a resort in 1916. For the next 15 years the resort enjoyed the post-war construction boom. Even during the depression, Grand Beach was the only resort in Manitoba to realize a profit. Bathing suits were first rented out at the bath houses on the beach. When waterlogged, these sagging, wool garments added considerable extra weight to the poor swimmers. Times changed, and swimsuits got smaller and more practical. Body building and bathing beauty contests developed, and tanning became a deliberate art The grandest of all the building at Grand Beach was the Dance Pavilion. Rumour has it that this was the largest Dance Hall of its time in the Commonwealth. Until its destruction by fire in 1950, this was the major source of entertainment and the central meeting spot of the resort community. Entire families and all age groups would enjoy the music of the band hired by the railway for the entire season. Admission was originally free, but in the Twenties "Jitney" (a nickel a dance) dancing began.

The Winnipeg Auto Club was formed in 1904, and shortly thereafter on Feb. 25, 1908 the province required all motor vehicles to be registered for the flat fee of $2. The registrant received a round aluminum disc to be mounted on the dashboard, and the markers were to be owner-provided. Unfortunately not many of these owner-made plates carry any inscription of Manitoba, making them difficult to authenticate without supporting documentation. They are typcially made of leather, with metal house numbers attached. Early dashboard disc, dated 1911. On March 24, 1911, legislation was passed mandating annual registration with the province providing the plates. Fees were $5 for all vehicles, except $2 for motorcycles. Founded before more than 100 years ago before the city received a charter, The Sun, through a succession of owners, has been an integral part of Western Manitoba life as the city progressed from a tent-town in the land rush days of the 1880s to the thriving prairie community it is today. Thomas Greenway, of Exeter, Ont., struck the spark which ignited a flame of adventure in 31-year-old Will J. White. With visions of the great prairies, linked to east and west by a gleaming ribbon of steel, urging him on, Will White travelled by rail, steamboat and foot to reach Brandon and establish The Sun. How he set up shop and acquired the hand-press on which he cranked out the first issue of The Sun on Jan. 19, 1882, must remain a mystery, but it must have taken an optimistic foresight for him not to turn right around and go back to Ontario. In his memoirs published in a 1927 "Oldtimers Edition" of The Sun the first publisher recalled "I soon reached Brandon. What! No building, nothing but tents? It looked for all the world like an army under canvas - at least that was all my vision took in at first glance. Tents formed the strong scene in the picture. But there were buildings - a few."

DEVELOPMENT OF LAKE WINNIPEG REGULATION PROJECT BEGAN, [ top ] THE NELSON RIVER HIGH VOLTAGE DIRECT CURRENT LINE was first energized. The HVDC transmission line carrying power from the generating stations built on the Nelson River was constructed by Atomic Energy of Canada Limited under the federal-provincial agreement of 1966. DORSEY AND RADISSON CONVERTER STATIONS [ top ] THE SECOND MANITOBA TO ONTARIO INTERCONNECTING TRANSMISSION LINE SECOND MANITOBA TO SASKATCHEWAN INTERCONNECTING TRANSMISSION LINE was completed via a 176-km, 230-kV transmission line between Dauphin, Manitoba, and Yorkton, Saskatchewan. An intermediate station was located at Roblin, Manitoba. The interconnection, permitting a power exchange of up to 150 MW, was built in accordance with an agreement made between the two utilities in 1970.
