Slideshow MOOSE LAKE CONNECTED TO THE PROVINCIAL POWER SYSTEM. The diesel generating station which for 15 years served the northern community located southeast of The Pas was retired. A 66-kV line from the provincial power system brought residents unrestricted use of electricity for the first time. The changeover to the main provincial power system would save about 450,000 litres of diesel fuel annually. THE 500-kV WINNIPEG TO MINNEAPOLIS INTERCONNECTING TRANSMISSION LINE WAS COMPLETED, MANDAN LETTER OF INTENT WAS SIGNED by Manitoba Hydro and the Nebraska Public Power District of Columbus for a proposed 500-kV transmission line between Manitoba and Nebraska. The proposed inter-connection was referred to as the MANDAN line. By the fall of 1980, a set of alternative transmission line corridors was defined, and meetings were held with interested parties to discuss corridor preferences. The project would be terminated in 1985. [ top ] THE 525-kW LAC BROCHET DIESEL GENERATING STATION was commissioned in November at the remote site 40 km south of the 59th parallel, close to the Saskatchewan border. A 350-kW diesel generating station was designed for Tadoule Lake, located at about the same latitude as Lac Brochet, with an in-service date of midsummer 1982.

Home About Us - The newly formed Consumers' Association of Canada welcomes one of its first provincial associations, CAC Manitoba. The organization was forged by a number of dedicated volunteers with an abundance of enthusiasm and expertise, and a sincere desire to improve the marketplace in Manitoba. CAC Manitoba had its first opportunity to represent Manitoba consumers before the Manitoba Milk control Board. The first Annual Consumer Week Fair was held at the Hudson's Bay store in Winnipeg. It included displays of products and featured guests speakers. One week in April is now proclaimed National Consumer Week by the federal government. A $100.00 donation enabled CAC Manitoba to run a Consumer Help phone. Even after CAC had an office, a long-time volunteer continued to take calls in her home during off hours until 1985. The first issues of The Manitoba CONSUMER was mailed to CAC members in Manitoba. Originally an annual publication, it is now published six times a year.

However, it wasn't always as such... Eric Carlson, the first proprietor of the 9 acres on Aikens Lake, had had a trap line in the area since the early 40ís. His cabin stood close to todayís lodge. One day, he decided to approach the federal government seeking permission to fish commercially on Aikens. This had been tried unsuccessfully back in 1938. The government suggested to him that tourism and sportfishing might be a better idea. Eric and his son Eddie began preparations in the fall of 1947 for construction the following spring. Trees were downed and brought into camp in the winter with the aid of a three-dog team. It was, of course, much easier to let the dogs drag the trees through the snow than to carry the logs in the summer! Those of you who have been to Aikens will recognize their craftsmanship in all of the cabins that have been painted brown... including the Wilderness Trail cabins. There is a trap door which leads to an underground storeroom connecting to numerous tunnels and pens where the Carlsons kept their animals in the winter time. Eric was a trapper and would spend weeks away from Elsie in the wintertime.

History Morris, Man, Town, pop 1645 (1996c), 1616 (1991c), 1613 (1986c), area 5.83 km2, in 1883, is located at the confluence of the Red and Morris rivers, 55 km S of Winnipeg. Originally known as Scratching River, Morris was named in honour of Alexander Morris The Rivers The Red and Morris rivers have greatly affected the town, especially during floods in l950, 1966 and 1979. On March 31, 1966, the Premier of Manitoba, Duff Roblin, called a flood meeting in Morris, where he and his Ministers personally informed the public of what to expect and what measures to take. The towns of Morris, St. Jean and Emerson began moving earth, hastily constructing ring dykes. On Easter Monday, 1966, due to the efforts of the Mennonite Disaster Service (MDS) , local help, and a contingent of Canadian Army Engineers, the dyke which was starting to shift due to the high waves and nearly 20 feet of water pushing against it at the lowest place was saved. Bulldozers were braced against the base of the dyke on the dry side and a boom of hydro poles on the wet side, plus added weight to the top of the sandbags, the dyke held. A Permanent dyke has been erected around the Town of Morris and we were safe during the "Flood of the Century" in 1997.

The Manitoba Society of Occupational Therapists (MSOT) is a non­profit, volunteer organization which exists in order to promote the occupational therapy profession and to disseminate knowledge of the profession within Manitoba. In February 1918, the University of Toronto started a six-week course of Occupational Therapy for "suitable young ladies". Following this course, several of these graduates moved west to tend the war wounded. Twenty-one O.T.'s are known to have been working in and around Winnipeg. They formed the Canadian Society of Occupational Therapists of Manitoba. Some records call the organization the Manitoba Society of Occupational Therapists of Canada. 1920 has been noted at times as the start of this group. Records show occupational therapists working in Brandon, Manitoba. 1950's The three or four O.T.'s in Manitoba became members of the Canadian Physiotherapy Society - Manitoba Branch; this group was instrumental in facilitating the University of Manitoba (U. of M.)diploma course. The School of Medical Rehabilitation at the U. of M. was opened.
