About Conservation/Geography and the ESRI Conservation Program
What we do:
The ESRI Conservation Program is the non-profit support arm of the Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI). We have helped to create and develop spatial analysis, computer mapping and geographic information systems (GIS) capability among thousands of non-profit organizations and individual projects of all sizes and types worldwide. We do this by donating and providing millions of dollars worth of computer technology and training for groups just beginning to work on geographic problems, on an ongoing basis, and for advanced groups at the cutting edge of conservation biology and spatial sciences. Conservation/Geography is how we describe their use of these technologies, theories, methods and skills to in their overall mission of conservation and social change. How we do it:
- We donate and provide dozens of different kinds of ESRI GIS software.

    MAP AND AERIAL PHOTOGRAPH COLLECTION
MAPS 1. INTRODUCTION Maps are collected because they provide information about relationships and distributions, particularly spatial relationships, of a very wide range of phenomena. They do this in a vivid graphic form difficult to convey in any other way. They can assist in the understanding of textual matter, and may even be an essential part of the text. Properly interpreted, maps provide a range of information for a wide and various range of users. A map is essentially a portrayal of place, in diagrammatic form, and is second only to the spoken and written word as a means of communicating what places are like. It is considered important that the Collection Development Policy for the map collection should be sufficiently flexible to adapt to changes in teaching programmes and the changing needs of users from various disciplines; should take into account the availability of certain kinds of maps; should take note of space and budget constraints; should allow for the acquisition of differing forms of cartographic materials (maps, charts, atlases, relief models, globes, remotely sensed images, computer produced maps, aerial photographs, etc.); and should allow for the acquisition of materials which will enhance the use of the collection (gazetteers, map indexes, etc.). The main responsibility for maintaining and expanding the map collection rests with the Geography and Geology Subject Librarians, who are responsible to the Group Manager, Science Information Services. The Subject Librarians need to be aware of changes in the information needs of map users and of the availability of new and different types of maps.
