Once Laussat arrived in Louisiana and assumed the position of Prefect, he issued the Decree of Pierre Clément Laussat upholding the Code Noir Laussat decreed that the Code Noir promulgated at Versailles in March 1724 for the administration of justice, police, discipline, and commerce of Negro slaves in the province and colony of Louisiana was in effect except for any provisions that contradicted the Constitution of the United States Under Louisiana ’s French and Spanish colonial systems, African American slaves received more liberal treatment than did their counterparts in Anglo America. Similarly, if you click on the legend to a map, you might get a more detailed explanation of the topic. Clicking on the arrows... ... will take you page by page through a specific subject, such as American History or Warfare. Clicking on the Contemporary Context button bar... ... will zoom out to show what's happening in the world at this time in a specific field of human activity. The icons symbolize Cities, Government, War, International Relations, Living Conditions and Economics , respectively. Although this atlas is non-linear in overall design, its backbone is probably the series of maps illustrating national political systems, so this is probably the best place to start if you have no particular topic you're curious about.

catalog record
The cartographic record created on paper by the early mapmakers preserves, places and events in the physical and historical context of the time in which the maps were made. Much of that context no longer exists on land, as development and growth have ridden roughshod over the past. The maps on this site cover the early modern period ending in 1850, just as so-called internal improvements (canals, highways, and railroads) began to cross the young nation and change the landscape. These early maps provide contemporary documentation of particular times and places and present a compelling way to study history today. The digitized maps and atlases included in American Shores are drawn from the extensive holdings of the Map Division of the Humanities and Social Sciences Library. In particular, the maps by English mapmakers from the Lawrence H. Slaughter Collection

Cavalcade of American History Revisited by Linda C. Joseph, Columbus (Ohio) Public Schools, Library of Congress Before You Begin [Editor's note: URLs mentioned in this article appear in the chart that follows.] L ast spring “Cavalcade of American History” appeared in the May/June issue of this magazine describing the American Memory collections of the Library of Congress. A year later nearly 20 more collections have been added as well as an expanded Learning Page designed especially for teachers. In addition, the author has been honored with a once-in-a-lifetime chance to work on special assignment with the Library of Congress to develop hands-on professional development workshops that will be offered in the visitor’s center, at conferences, and online. Let’s journey again through history from the handwritten documents of the Founding Fathers to the social and cultural landscape of a growing nation. In words, pictures, and sounds the American Memory collections offer us the unique opportunity to dig through original source material and bring living history into our classrooms.
IN WORDS Alexander Graham Bell
Read Alexander Graham Bell’s notebook entry of March 10, 1876, as he describes the successful experiment with the telephone and the words he spoke to his assistant: “Mr. Watson—come here—I want to see you.” View the sketches he made of the telephone design along with his handwritten notations. In addition there are special presentations, including a timeline, family tree, and information, about the inventor and scientist that will be very useful in the classroom.
