Sherando High School is a part of the Frederick County, VA school system and was established in 1993. The school is located approximately ten miles south of Winchester off Interstate 81. The schools population is just over 1300 students. The band is the single largest student organization on campus with an enrollment in excess of one hundred and thirty members. The band is under the direction of Mr. Daniel J. Schoemmell. The Sherando Band has been a Virginia Honor Band every year since the school's opening in 1993. In its ten years in existence, the Band has won over 100 awards in the United States and Canada, making it one of the most successful organizations in the Frederick County school system. The organization's success can be attributed to great students, a dedicated director , and a strong supportive booster organization. We encourage everyone to be involved in the Sherando Band organization.

UM Band, 1897 Ohio State Band, 1894 Just as the Michigan - Ohio State football rivalry has been called the greatest in college sports, the competition between marching bands has been equally spirited. Both make justifiable claims to being the best in the land. Michigan's band claims a number of firsts in its long history, including first Big Ten band to play at a Rose Bowl game and first Big Ten band to play at a Superbowl Game. For a time the UM Band was known as the "Transcontinental Band" because it played in both Yankee Stadium and the Rose Bowl in 1950. The Ohio State band can cite an equally impressive list of firsts and humbly bills itself under the acronym TBDBITL (The Best Damn Band In The Land). If those claims seem a bit outlandish, the judges of the Sudler Trophy, given annually to the college band of particular excellence, confirmed them by awarding Michigan the first trophy in 1983 and Ohio State the second in 1984. http://www.sbgmusic.com/html/teacher/reference/instruments/marching.html
Marching Bands and Band Instruments
The term "marching band" refers to an instrumental ensemble that performs outdoors and usually is moving in some manner during their performance. Most often marching bands can be seen in parades and during halftime shows at football games.
The outdoor performance of music has existed for thousands of years. One of the earliest existing depictions of this activity is a wall relief that dates from the seventh or eighth century B.C. It can be found in the royal palace in the ancient city of Nineveh and shows a group of musicians in a procession. The musicians include harp, double pipe, and lyre players.
American marching bands of one sort or another have existed since the Revolutionary War. As early as 1777, regiments of the Continental Army had musicians assigned to their ranks. Fife and drum corps played an active role in the war by accompanying soldiers on the actual battlefield. In 1798 the first official Marine Band was formed. Military marching bands were in existence through the Civil War. Then the United States Congress reduced the use of these bands during battle. At that time bands took on a more peaceful role, and "town bands" began to be formed. A town band is made up of local musicians who often play concerts outdoors on summer evenings, and might play marches while marching through town during parades on occasions such as Independence Day. Many people still enjoy playing in and listening to town bands.
