Mr. Lenihan gives bonechilling acounts of diving situations involving caves, polluted waters and other truly extreme variables. I have been a scuba diver here in San Diego for over thirty years and I have come with time to admit my limits. This man, wether crazy or not, has defied most the limits I am aware of, but you can't say he was clueless, he's still here to write this book. Being quite involved in the diving community for some time and also associated with some west coast based archaeologist, I have heard nothing but high regards for this mans reliability and profesionalism as an archaeologist. I have read some of the reviews by other so called sport divers who are down on Mr. Lenihan. I am angered by their comments and dissappointed by their ethics treating ships. Essentially, they are treasure hunters and thier ethics are, "the gold I find while destroying sites for other divers is mine!" I fully admit that they know more about ship wreck diving than myself although I doubt Mr. Lenihan is in jeopardy of being overwhelmed by their "unselfish principles" or vast historical knowledge of the sites they desecrate. From the very positive articles I have read in such magazines as "Skindiver" or "Sportdiver" magazine, I am more willing to take them seriously. But thats just me. For anyone interested at all in the ethics of preservation or the insanity of adventure, wether you agree or not, this book will probably fullfill alot of those curiosities.

Archeology Bronze man from Croatia A group of experts recently presented their evaluation of the bronze statue which was removed from the Adriatic sea-floor several weeks ago near the island of Lošinj. They also suggested measures for its preservation and protection. Experts gathered in the Croatian Ministry of Culture to discuss the condition and measures that should be taken in order to protect and adequately present the major archeological discovery of an ancient bronze statue of an athlete, which was recently found in the waters off the island of Lošinj. The statue has been dubbed the "Bronze Man" of Croatia. It is highly probable that the statue depicts the athlete Apoxyomenos rubbing off oil and dust from his body with a scraper. An archeological diving team of the Cultural Heritage Preservation Administration, a part of the Ministry of Culture, in cooperation with Croatian Interior Ministry divers, removed the statue from under 44 meters deep sea, where it ended up after a shipwreck. Foreign partners, research sponsors and representatives of Oxford Maritime Limited were also present during this complicated operation. "Since this is the first time that such a conservatory operation is taking place in Croatia, we formed a commission which will evaluate the condition of the statue and make suggestions for a preservation program," said Miljenko Domijan, the assistant culture minister in charge of the Cultural Heritage Preservation Administration. In addition to local conservationists from the Croatian Restoration Institute and the Ru?er Boškovia Institute, top world experts William Oddy of the British Museum and Giuliano Tordi of the eminent Opificio delle pietre dure restoration institute in Florence were also invited. The final procedure of the conservation (after moving the statue) will take place in the Zadar Archeological Museum, which was placed in charge of the project called "The Statue and the Shipwreck."

Ancient cities found beneath the waves of Mediterranean A diver surveys the ruins beneath the Mediterranean Sea. By: David McCormick , June 5, 2000 Archeologists have uncovered the ruins of three ancient cities beneath the waves of the Mediterranean Sea near Alexandria, Egypt. The cities - Herakleion, Canopus and Menouthis - were until now only known through Greek tragedies and mythology. Each city was renowned for its lavish architecture and culture. References to the cities in ancient writings indicate they were important centres of trade in the Eastern Mediterranean world and that residents lived a luxurious and decadent lifestyle. "Those must have been very important sea ports," says Robert Leprohon, and Egyptologist at the University of Toronto. "They're right on the coast. And we certainly know from lots and lots of evidence that there was incredible free trade at the time." A team led by Franck Goddio, a French archeologist, worked for two years in the Bay of Aboukir, about 20 kilometres from Alexandria, uncovering the ruins. With the help of the Egyptian Supreme Council of Antiquities - the top archeology body of the Egyptian government - Goddio's team developed an electronic underwater map of the area to help them find the ruins. The water where the cities were discovered is between seven and nine metres deep.

Services Licensing Contact Us Site Map Florida Archaeology The Underwater Archaeological Preserves In 1987, Florida began to develop a statewide system of underwater parks featuring shipwrecks and other historic sites. The shipwreck preserves have become popular attractions for skin and scuba diving visitors to witness a part of Florida's history first-hand. They contain not only interesting archaeological features, but also an abundance of marine life that make the parks living museums in the sea. Each site is interpreted by an underwater plaque; a brochure and laminated underwater guides are available from local dive shops. The parks are open to the public year round, free of charge. There are six parks at present, and several others under development. Future Preserves If, in the course of your underwater explorations, you find a site that might be a potential candidate for a new Underwater Archaeological Preserve, you are encouraged to nominate it for consideration. The Bureau of Archaeological Research invites nominations for new underwater preserves throughout the State of Florida, whether located in inland waters, or offshore within Florida's territorial waters. A preserve should have public access, favorable diving conditions, and interesting cultural and natural site features. If selected, a site may then be designated as a preserve through a cooperative project between government and the public. The development of a new park is an excellent opportunity for a diving group to become involved in an underwater project with lasting results.

About the Great Lakes Shipwreck Research Foundation The Great Lakes Shipwreck Research Foundation is a Wisconsin non profit (501 (C)(3)) corporation organized for the purpose of furthering public awareness of our Great Lakes marine heritage through education and research, and promoting conservation, study and responsible enjoyment of historic Great Lakes shipwrecks by divers and non divers alike. Our primary activities include: 1. Facilitating a yearly conference devoted to Great Lakes shipwrecks. 2. Dissemination of information through our internet website and online newsgroup. 3.
