Biology Major (B.S.)
School of Natural Sciences This curriculum is designed for students who plan to attend graduate school and for students who wish to prepare for admission to a school of medicine, dentistry, optometry, pharmacy, osteopathy, podiatry, veterinary medicine or chiropractic, as well as those not planning to take an advanced degree in biology. Students should consult the catalog of the school they plan to attend in order to include in their undergraduate programs any special prerequisites not included in the biology curriculum. The preprofessional adviser helps students prepare for entrance into their desired professions. Premedical Students: Entrance credits vary, but most medical schools require three or four years of college. The biological sciences curriculum fulfills the basic requirements for admission to medical school. The Medical College Admission Test of American Medical Colleges also is required by medical schools. See "Premedical Degree Option."

Choices in Biology
Biology at Westminster College means many things: a choice of four different majors, exceptional modern facilities, excellent faculty committed to excellent teaching, and an outstanding acceptance rate into graduate and professional schools. Most of all, Biology at Westminster means a superb education in the biological sciences, together with the significant advantages of schooling in the liberal arts. A high school graduate interested in pursuing a college major in Biology has a considerable number of career possibilities. These include biotechnology, ecology, medicine, marine biology and many more. Westminster believes that a solid undergraduate education in general biology, both contemporary and traditional, is the best preparation for any biological career. The consistently successful placement of graduates in advanced degree programs and direct employment options has confirmed this belief. Major Options
The Department of Biology offers two major programs, Biology and Molecular Biology. The Biology major requires two courses in biological principles, and one each in organismic biology, genetics, ecology, and physiology, plus three electives from a diverse array of possibilities.

Despite stiff competition, the acceptance rate for UCSC graduates is well above the national average. UCSC students have been accepted at the eight California medical schools, as well as at all the major medical schools in the country, including Harvard, Yale, and Johns Hopkins. The academic performance of UCSC graduates once they enter medical school has been very good. The Natural Sciences Division provides advising services for all premedical students. A series of orientation sessions, designed to answer questions about preparation for and admission to medical school, is offered throughout the academic year. The staff at the Health Science Career Advising Office also offer individual guidance for students who are in the process of applying to medical school.

Sociology Other Academic Programs Individual Study Prelaw Premedicine It is a popular misconception that students must major in prelaw or politics in order to get into law school. This simply is not the case. Law schools accept students from a variety of majors: biology, anthropology, physics, economics, chemistry, mathematics, engineering, sociology, literature, philosophy, and psychology, for example. Almost any major offered at UCSC can provide adequate preparation for law school. The time to enter law school is not necessarily immediately after graduation. Some law schools prefer students fresh out of college, but many do not. Each year, priests, surgeons, homemakers, professors, scientists, engineers, pilots, stockbrokers, welfare workers, and foresters are accepted into law schools across the nation. The ages of first-year law students range from 21 to 50 years, with the median around 26. This diversity in backgrounds and training enriches the legal experience of all the students.

Table of Contents Courses and Programs Introduction Alphabetical Listing of Courses and Programs Warren D. Dolphin, Program Coordinator The biological sciences at Iowa State University are organized into 20 departments and programs. These can be grouped into the basic sciences, agricultural sciences, and veterinary sciences. Well over 200 faculty consider themselves life scientists and most teach courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Such a large faculty group provides many opportunities for students to learn from some of the national leaders in biological research and teaching and to participate in exciting, meaningful research projects that explore the frontiers in the life sciences. Few other universities have such a wealth of faculty expertise available to undergraduate students. Biology is an interdepartmental undergraduate major. Students majoring in Biology are able to integrate knowledge from several life science disciplines into a coherent, broadly based undergraduate program of study. Students who wish to study specific areas of the basic biological sciences should declare majors in animal ecology, biochemistry, botany, entomology, genetics, microbiology, or zoology. Although requirements for biology and related majors differ significantly, the courses taken during the first two years are similar. In particular, all require freshman biology and chemistry, most require calculus and organic chemistry, and all require credits in general education courses. As a result and with proper planning, a student is able to transfer from one basic biological science major to another without serious difficulty any time during the first two years. For detailed requirements, see the catalog entries under the particular majors.

UH's program will incorporate marine biology courses, such as field trips for tagging sharks. Till now, Hawai'i Pacific University has been the only school here offering a bachelor's in marine biology. Photo courtesy UH Marine Option Program Until now HPU has been Hawai'i's only university that conferred a bachelor's degree in marine biology. But by this time tomorrow it's likely HPU will have to change its advertising campaign highlighting its solo role. "This degree should have been offered 20 years ago," said Chuck Hayes, UH dean of arts and sciences. The new program is in the College of Natural Sciences.

  • Biology is a large and rapidly expanding area of study which can lead to many exciting careers. We provide students with the opportunity to develop a strong conceptual understanding of the principles of biology and of its allied sciences (Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics). Much of a student's first two years (three if on Co-op) will be spent acquiring that information base. However, as the basic requirements are completed, there will be increased opportunities for advanced studies in fields of special interest. We hope that our program will not only offer the chance for students to prepare themselves for future careers of graduate or professional study, but will also interest, challenge and excite them about the study of biology. One of the great strengths of the biology department at the University of Puget Sound is that it is large enough to allow students to study all aspects of living organisms, from subcellular structures to populations, yet small enough to allow students and faculty to work closely together in lectures, laboratories, seminars, and research projects. The faculty of the biology department is composed of committed teachers and active research scientists who enjoy contact with their students in the classroom and in research projects. A student who takes courses in biology is not simply a body in a classroom; he or she becomes part of a community that includes faculty, staff, and other students in the department.
