MARINE BIOLOGY IN TURLOCK?
The Department of Biological Sciences at California State University Stanislaus offers both the Bachelor of Arts and the Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences as undergraduate degrees. Within either of these degree programs, the department offers concentrations in Botany, Ecology and Field Biology, Entomology, Environmental Sciences, Genetics, Marine Biology Microbiology and Zoology. Students wishing to have a specific concentration will need to complete a minimum of 16 upper-division specified units within the area of the concentration as well as the requirements for the major. The courses specified for each concentration typically count within the major, so students completing a concentration ordinarily do not need to take additional courses. The specified courses/requirements for the Marine Biology Concentration are:
Zoology 4420
Invertebrate Zoology I, 4 units (or MSCI 3240)
Zoology 4430
Invertebrate Zoology II, 4 units (or MSCI 3250)

Marine Biology and Limnology
College of Science and Engineering Undergraduate Programs
The Because marine biology spans all biological and most physical sciences, a high school graduate who elects to enter this program should be competent in a wide variety of subjects. High school mathematics, chemistry, and biology should be emphasized. Other pertinent courses might be chosen from such fields as geology, meteorology, physics, English composition, and foreign language. Community college students considering transfer into the Marine Biology program should complete coursework in general biology, zoology, college chemistry, and physics. Wide ranging intellectual curiosity and flexibility in conceptual thought are positive indicators for potential in the fields of Marine Biology and Limnology. Moss Landing Marine Laboratories
San Francisco State University is a member of a consortium of six California State Universities that jointly operate the Moss Landing Marine Laboratories on Monterey Bay. Moss Landing conducts instructional and research activities on near-shore marine and estuarine environments. Oceangoing research vessels based at Moss Landing also participate in wide-ranging offshore marine research. The Moss Landing curriculum supports a range of programs in marine science. Students matriculating at any of the six participating institutions can take part or all of their graduate work at Moss Landing.

Biology
College of Science and Engineering Undergraduate Programs
The Department of Biology provides a broad range of quality programs to meet student needs. Coursework ranges from introductory biology, botany, zoology, and microbiology to specialized courses in molecular genetics, microbial metabolism, plant ecology, ornithology, limnology, and neurosciences. To aid the student with directed interests, the department has grouped the courses into areas of concentrations described under Degrees and Programs Offered. Further information concerning these may be found on separate information sheets. Students entering any of the programs in Biology should have a sound background in high school chemistry, physics, and mathematics. Students majoring in the general Biology degree program are required to complete 57 units in the major. In addition to the biological science courses, it includes basic and organic chemistry and general physics courses. This program is designed to give breadth rather than depth in Biology. To accomplish this, advanced coursework is distributed in genetics, physiology, ecology, cell or molecular biology, taxonomy or morphology, and evolutionary biology. Electives are also required.

"The goal of TCP is to provide an accurate, interesting and educational content oriented page devoted to the most active, intelligent and interesting invertebrates known - the Cephalopods. ... TCP is aimed at the general public; from kindergarten to PhD and all levels in between. However, CephBase is aimed specifically at scientists although all are welcome to visit. ... The purpose of CephBase is to provide life history, distribution, catch and taxonomic data on all living species of cephalopods. Cephbase currently includes a dynamic list of all species of cephalopods, a self updating international list of cephalopod workers and location data for a variety of species of Cephalopods." This page includes a variety of infromation, images, and links.

The Emphasis in Marine Biology provides education and training for students planning to enter marine professions with the BS degree or advanced degrees. At the bachelor level students will be qualified for research technician positions in university and government laboratories and positions involving marine biological research and resource development and management. Government agencies employing marine biologists include the U.S. National Marine Fisheries Service, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, state fish and game departments, water quality agencies and local planning and management agencies. The private sector may also offer positions in such areas as environmental studies and the seafood industry. Marine biologists with graduate degrees normally have a wider range of employment opportunities and higher salaries. These include positions at community colleges and, with the PhD, at universities. High level research positions with government and private research institutions also normally require an advanced degree. PREPARATION FOR THE MAJOR (39 units lower division courses) Biol 201 Prin. Position Openings CERTIFICATE IN MARINE BIOLOGY The Certificate Program in Living Marine Resource Ecology (Marine Biology) provides interested students with both a challenging academic program and substantive hands-on experiences in the field. Available only to upper-level students who have met application requirements, the program prepares students to pursue professional careers in the application of ecology to significant resource issues of the marine environment. The certificate requirements assure a strong knowledge base in relevant biological disciplines, hands-on research experience with marine organisms and habitats, and an awareness of the major problems of marine resource ecology now confronting science and society and how they might be solved. Students enrolling in the program will be required to complete at least 16 hours as described below and must maintain a 3.0 GPA or better in courses used for the certificate. Students wishing to enter the program retroactively may do so no later than the first semester of their senior year. Prerequisites for application to the Living Marine Resource Ecology Certificate Program include:
  • Completion of prerequisites required for the major in Biological Science [BSC 2010/2010L, BSC 2011/2011L, CHM 1045/1045L, and CHM 1046/1046L], and

MARINE BIOLOGY Career Monograph GENERAL DESCRIPTION AND QUALIFICATIONS Marine biology is the field of study concerned with ocean life and all of its biological manifestations. Areas of study include systematics, ecology, anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, pathology, parasitology, reproduction and development, mariculture, ocean farming, pollution biology, energy resources and conservation. Marine biologists must be able to conduct research, analyze data, have good written and oral communication skills and a scientific curiosity. They identify, catalogue, and analyze different kinds of sea life. Marine biologists often use computers and statistical analysis in their research. A bachelor's degree is the minimum requirement for entry-level positions in marine biology; however, competition is keen and positions are typically obtained by those with advanced degrees. CSULB is one of the few universities with a Bachelor of Science Degree programs in Marine Biology in the Western U.S. Since marine biology is a combination of many life sciences, the more specialized training or experience one has, the more competitive one becomes. For college or university teaching, a Ph.D. is a necessity. CAREER OPTIONS
